Chapter 1

Noticing my silence, Noah Ashford thought I was deliberately refusing to respond. He marched up to me and kicked me to the floor.

"Are you trying to play dumb? Read every single word out loud and beg for Mia's forgiveness on your knees, or I won't let you off the hook!"

I didn't have time to dodge. His kick sent me flying, and I slammed hard into the floor.

My wolf let out an agonized cry.

I forced my eyes open despite the excruciating pain and focused on the notes. They were covered in glaring red handwriting, but to me, those crooked lines looked no different from the legs of dead spiders.

What on earth was written on them?

I had no idea.

Mia Ashford sat on the couch, pretending to tremble in fear at Noah's outburst.

"Noah, stop it!" she cried. "Layla went missing when she was young and was raised alone in another pack. Maybe she's just trying to get your attention by doing something so extreme."

She clutched her chest, her voice trembling as she continued, "But I can't take this anymore. She keeps sneaking these notes into my room every day at midnight.

"I've been having nightmares every night. In my dreams, she keeps telling me to die and get out of the pack.

"I'm so scared… My wolf could break down at any moment."

Mom patted Mia's back gently, trying to comfort her. But the next second, she turned toward me and glowered at me.

"Layla, look what you've done to Mia!" she hissed. "I should've prayed to the Moon Goddess that I would never give birth to you!"

I stared at Mom, the memory of her bringing me back three days ago still fresh in my mind.

She had sobbed as she told me that I was her biological daughter who had gone missing, swearing that she would do everything she could to make it up to me in the future.

Yet now, she was spitting venom at me as though I were her enemy.

I shook my head and picked up the notes.

"It wasn't me," I said.

Noah pulled out his phone, brought up a security camera recording, and shoved it in my face.

"Are you still trying to lie?"

The video showed two in the morning. A figure dressed in a black hoodie kept their face and body concealed, furtively slipping the notes through Mia's door one by one.

That black hoodie was the only piece of clothing I owned that wasn't torn. I had picked it up from the orphanage's rubbish bin last winter, and it was covered in filthy stains.

"You're the only one in the house who would wear something this disgusting!" Noah spat, glaring at me. "The evidence is right in front of us. Are you still going to deny it?"

I played the video over and over again. The figure in it had a similar build to mine, but it really wasn't me.

"I threw away that hoodie a long time ago," I said, meeting Noah's gaze. "It was too dirty and smelly. I was afraid I wasn't good enough for this family wearing it."

When my family had come to welcome me on my first day back in the pack, they had all been dressed impeccably. Not a speck of dust could be seen on their clothes.

So that very night, I had thrown the hoodie away, afraid they'd be disgusted by the smell on me.

Mia wrung her fingers and spoke in a small voice.

"Layla, are you saying someone secretly picked up the clothes you threw away and used them to frame you?"

Her eyes reddened as she continued, "But apart from the maids, we only have cooks in this house. They've worked here diligently for decades and have no grudge against you. Why would they do something like this?"

Tears rolled down her cheeks, her face filled with hurt.

"Or… are you implying that I put those notes through my own door and staged this entire incident myself?"

"Enough, Layla!" Mom suddenly yelled.

"Making a mistake is one thing, but you refuse to admit it and keep denying everything," she scolded, her voice laced with disappointment. "Mia can't even bear to hurt a stray cat on the street. Why would she ever hurt you? Do you take us all for fools?"

Dad, who had remained silent the entire time, suddenly slammed his hand on the table.

The deafening crash echoed through the house, and the entire living room fell silent.

His bloodshot eyes blazed with fury, and his presence grew imposing.

"Since you refuse to admit your mistake…"

He turned to the maid standing nearby and ordered coldly, "Search her room. Find the evidence."

The moment I heard them say gold, I almost laughed. To them, money could apparently buy forgiveness for anything—even the guilt and pain they had caused me. "Keep your charity."I walked out the door without looking back. "I don't want your money or your house," I spat. "You and I have nothing to do with each other anymore.""Layla!" Mom cried out, chasing me to the door. "If you're really going to leave, at least take a cloak and a dagger to protect yourself."I didn't stop. I walked away with nothing, just like how I had arrived at this house in the first place—with nothing in my hands. I hadn't gone far when I heard hurried footsteps behind me. Noah caught up, carrying a heavy chest in his hands. "Layla, I know you won't forgive us, but you have to take this."He forcibly shoved the chest into my hands. "There's gold and a key inside," he said. "You don't have any money, and you can't even read. How are you supposed to survive?"Please, I'm begging you as your b

The living room fell silent again. Mom, Dad, and Noah looked at me with guilt etched across their faces.Noah reached out, wanting to pull me into a hug. "Layla, I was wrong," he said, his voice hoarse with remorse."Don't touch me with those precious hands of yours," I snapped, dodging his hand. "It makes me sick."Noah's hand froze in midair. "Layla…" he croaked, his eyes turning red. "I didn't know you'd suffered so much out there. I didn't know you'd never been to school or even learned how to read."His gaze fell on the red ink staining my hands and the scars covering them. "Please, just give me one more chance. Can you forgive me?"I took a deep breath. "Forgive you?"When you kicked me across the room just now, did that ever occur to you?"When you pinned my hand down and forced me to write that apology letter, nearly crushing my bones, did you think about giving me another chance?"Now that the truth is out, you're suddenly acting like the perfect big brother.

Dad glared at Mia, fury blazing in his eyes. He turned to the warriors and barked, "Go investigate! Pull up all the surveillance footage."I want to see for myself who has been lying to me and making a fool of us all!""Dad, no!" Mia scrambled toward him, throwing her arms around his leg. "How can you believe a stray wolf who grew up in an orphanage over the daughter you raised yourself?"Her eyes turned red as tears streamed down her face. "I'm your daughter," she cried. "You've loved and cared for me ever since I was little!"Mom also panicked and stepped in front of Dad. "Have you lost your mind? You're really going to investigate this?"What if this gets out of hand? What will pack members say about us?""Enough! All of you, shut up!!" Dad bellowed, pushing Mom aside. His powerful Alpha command instantly filled the room."I have to get to the bottom of this."He pointed at the curse notes scattered across the floor. "I can clearly read every word written on them.

I turned toward Mia. She was quietly backing away, clearly trying to slip out of the room.I immediately blocked her path and demanded, "You said I was the one who wrote the notes, didn't you? "Then let's call in the elders and have them investigate. Let's see if they can find any evidence that you framed me!"Panic flashed across Mom's face. "The elders? Absolutely not!" she blurted out. "This is just a small family matter. There's no need to involve the pack's elders."She was the first to object, desperately trying to protect Dad's reputation. Seeing this, Mia immediately put on a tearful expression and ducked behind Mom."Mom, Layla must've lost her mind after she's been through," she said, her voice trembling as though she were about to cry. "Layla, I swear I didn't write these curse notes. Even if the elders came to investigate, they'd only find your pheromones on the pen and paper. In the end, you'd still be exposed as the culprit."Just imagine how humiliating that

The entire room fell silent. Only the sound of my ragged breathing filled the air. Noah reached out to grab me, but he suddenly froze. His eyes widened. "What? You've never been to school?"He repeated the question in disbelief, as though he couldn't believe what he'd just heard. Mom swayed on her feet, nearly collapsing. The fury on her face was gone. "How could that be…" she whispered. Even Dad, who had always carried himself with the authority of an Alpha, was stunned. A flicker of disbelief flashed across his intimidating red eyes. "You spent more than a decade in an orphanage in that pack and never went to school before?" he asked, clearly struggling to comprehend it. I looked at them coldly—my biological parents, the most powerful Alpha and Luna in the entire pack."That's right. I never went to school."I smiled wryly. "Is that really so strange?"That orphanage only took in disabled and lost pups. The caretakers there were short-tempered and didn't care

"I'm not writing it," I said through gritted teeth, mustering all my strength to pull my hand away.Dad's expression darkened. He stormed over, prying open my tightly clenched fist and forcing the expensive pen into my hand. I could barely breathe. The bones I'd broken when I was ten felt as though they were snapping all over again, and the sensation sent a fresh wave of pain through me."Hold the pen properly!" Dad roared. He forced my fingers around it, pressing the nib hard against the blank sheet of paper. "If you can't write, then draw it," he snarled. "I don't care how you do it—just get something on that paper!"My breathing grew ragged, and a buzzing filled my head. My wolf grew restless with fear, barely holding on to consciousness."I'm not writing it!" I shouted. I fought back with all my strength, terror overwhelming me. A sharp ripping sound filled the air as the pen tore through the paper. In the struggle, the expensive fountain pen was completely crushe
