Chapter 3

Author: Gogo Coco
Mom's expression immediately changed.

"Are you insane? Absolutely not!" she hissed, grabbing Dad's arm tightly. "If she gets taken away by the warriors for the Trial Ceremony, what will pack members say about us?"

"Your reputation as an Alpha will be completely ruined!"

She wasn't worried about me at all. She only cared about our family's reputation.

Mia hurried over as well, tears welling in her eyes as she pleaded with Dad.

"Dad, don't send her to the Trial," she cried. "If Layla goes through the Trial Ceremony, her whole life will be ruined. I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose. She's just starved for love."

Her voice was sincere, making her appear incredibly magnanimous as she continued, "Just get her to write an apology letter.

"As long as she writes a 1,000-word apology letter today and swears that she'll never steal anything or scare me in the middle of the night again, I'll forgive her."

Dad fell silent for a moment, seemingly deep in thought.

"Your sister is kind enough to give you one last chance," he finally said, suppressing his anger.

He had the maid fetch some paper from the study and slammed it down on the table.

"Write the apology letter right here at this table."

Noah picked up the red-ink pen and held it out to me. When I didn't take it, he grabbed me by the ear and flung me into the chair.

"Sit down and write," he snarled. "You're not leaving until you finish the apology letter."

I froze in the chair, staring at the blank sheet of paper and red pen in front of me.

My fingers began to tremble violently, an uncontrollable physical response to fear.

"What's taking you so long?"

Noah lost his temper and slapped me across the face.

"Layla, don't be ungrateful."

My cheek burned, but I kept my hands tucked beneath the table, terrified of bringing them out.

"I can't write," I said.

The last shred of Noah's patience finally ran out.

He bent down and forcibly pulled out my right hand. His grip was so strong that when he squeezed my wrist, it felt as though my bones were about to break again.

"You're capable of writing those vicious curse notes in the middle of the night, but now you can't write an apology letter?"

"I never wrote them!" I screamed, struggling frantically against his grip. "I've told you a thousand times I didn't do it!"

Seeing this, Mia picked up one of the notes from the floor and walked toward me.

"Layla, I know you're upset because you've been exposed," she said, her gentle voice like that of a forgiving angel.

"If you don't want to write the apology letter, then just copy what's written on this note.

"Add your own name in front of 'Go to hell.'"

She reached out and nudged the blank sheet of paper toward me.

"As long as you copy it once and add your name, proving to Mom and Dad that you're truly sorry, we won't blame you. They won't send you to the Trial Ceremony either."

"Layla, Mia's even willing to swallow her pride for you," Mom said with a frown. "Stop being so stubborn."

I stared at the note. It was filled with crooked lines and strange shapes, and I couldn't even understand what any of those lines meant.

If I couldn't even read them, how was I supposed to copy them?

The moment I heard them say gold, I almost laughed. To them, money could apparently buy forgiveness for anything—even the guilt and pain they had caused me. "Keep your charity."I walked out the door without looking back. "I don't want your money or your house," I spat. "You and I have nothing to do with each other anymore.""Layla!" Mom cried out, chasing me to the door. "If you're really going to leave, at least take a cloak and a dagger to protect yourself."I didn't stop. I walked away with nothing, just like how I had arrived at this house in the first place—with nothing in my hands. I hadn't gone far when I heard hurried footsteps behind me. Noah caught up, carrying a heavy chest in his hands. "Layla, I know you won't forgive us, but you have to take this."He forcibly shoved the chest into my hands. "There's gold and a key inside," he said. "You don't have any money, and you can't even read. How are you supposed to survive?"Please, I'm begging you as your b

The living room fell silent again. Mom, Dad, and Noah looked at me with guilt etched across their faces.Noah reached out, wanting to pull me into a hug. "Layla, I was wrong," he said, his voice hoarse with remorse."Don't touch me with those precious hands of yours," I snapped, dodging his hand. "It makes me sick."Noah's hand froze in midair. "Layla…" he croaked, his eyes turning red. "I didn't know you'd suffered so much out there. I didn't know you'd never been to school or even learned how to read."His gaze fell on the red ink staining my hands and the scars covering them. "Please, just give me one more chance. Can you forgive me?"I took a deep breath. "Forgive you?"When you kicked me across the room just now, did that ever occur to you?"When you pinned my hand down and forced me to write that apology letter, nearly crushing my bones, did you think about giving me another chance?"Now that the truth is out, you're suddenly acting like the perfect big brother.

Dad glared at Mia, fury blazing in his eyes. He turned to the warriors and barked, "Go investigate! Pull up all the surveillance footage."I want to see for myself who has been lying to me and making a fool of us all!""Dad, no!" Mia scrambled toward him, throwing her arms around his leg. "How can you believe a stray wolf who grew up in an orphanage over the daughter you raised yourself?"Her eyes turned red as tears streamed down her face. "I'm your daughter," she cried. "You've loved and cared for me ever since I was little!"Mom also panicked and stepped in front of Dad. "Have you lost your mind? You're really going to investigate this?"What if this gets out of hand? What will pack members say about us?""Enough! All of you, shut up!!" Dad bellowed, pushing Mom aside. His powerful Alpha command instantly filled the room."I have to get to the bottom of this."He pointed at the curse notes scattered across the floor. "I can clearly read every word written on them.

I turned toward Mia. She was quietly backing away, clearly trying to slip out of the room.I immediately blocked her path and demanded, "You said I was the one who wrote the notes, didn't you? "Then let's call in the elders and have them investigate. Let's see if they can find any evidence that you framed me!"Panic flashed across Mom's face. "The elders? Absolutely not!" she blurted out. "This is just a small family matter. There's no need to involve the pack's elders."She was the first to object, desperately trying to protect Dad's reputation. Seeing this, Mia immediately put on a tearful expression and ducked behind Mom."Mom, Layla must've lost her mind after she's been through," she said, her voice trembling as though she were about to cry. "Layla, I swear I didn't write these curse notes. Even if the elders came to investigate, they'd only find your pheromones on the pen and paper. In the end, you'd still be exposed as the culprit."Just imagine how humiliating that

The entire room fell silent. Only the sound of my ragged breathing filled the air. Noah reached out to grab me, but he suddenly froze. His eyes widened. "What? You've never been to school?"He repeated the question in disbelief, as though he couldn't believe what he'd just heard. Mom swayed on her feet, nearly collapsing. The fury on her face was gone. "How could that be…" she whispered. Even Dad, who had always carried himself with the authority of an Alpha, was stunned. A flicker of disbelief flashed across his intimidating red eyes. "You spent more than a decade in an orphanage in that pack and never went to school before?" he asked, clearly struggling to comprehend it. I looked at them coldly—my biological parents, the most powerful Alpha and Luna in the entire pack."That's right. I never went to school."I smiled wryly. "Is that really so strange?"That orphanage only took in disabled and lost pups. The caretakers there were short-tempered and didn't care

"I'm not writing it," I said through gritted teeth, mustering all my strength to pull my hand away.Dad's expression darkened. He stormed over, prying open my tightly clenched fist and forcing the expensive pen into my hand. I could barely breathe. The bones I'd broken when I was ten felt as though they were snapping all over again, and the sensation sent a fresh wave of pain through me."Hold the pen properly!" Dad roared. He forced my fingers around it, pressing the nib hard against the blank sheet of paper. "If you can't write, then draw it," he snarled. "I don't care how you do it—just get something on that paper!"My breathing grew ragged, and a buzzing filled my head. My wolf grew restless with fear, barely holding on to consciousness."I'm not writing it!" I shouted. I fought back with all my strength, terror overwhelming me. A sharp ripping sound filled the air as the pen tore through the paper. In the struggle, the expensive fountain pen was completely crushe
