Chapter 3

Autor: Nameless
Richard was thrilled that I had decided to accept the assignment, but he couldn't help but ask, out of concern, "Is your girlfriend okay with this arrangement?"

I shook my head. "I'm going to break up with her."

Dustin Sanders had done me a favor by helping me come to my senses. Starting today, I had to prepare for the handover at work and handle everything related to moving abroad.

After a long, grueling day at work, it was already pitch-black when I stepped out of the office. After a moment's thought, I decided to just grab dinner before heading home.

When I arrived home, I found Charlotte with a gift box in one hand and her phone pressed to her ear in the other.

"Yeah, it's not every day that a big shot like you graces our city with your presence. Of course, I'm pulling out all the stops for you. Don't worry, Mr. Sanders.

"I'll definitely knock your socks off. Go ahead and order without me. I'll be on my way now."

Oh, right. It was Dustin's birthday.

A doting smile played on her lips. It was a soft, tender expression she had never shown me.

Charlotte had always been aloof with me. Even when she smiled, it was faint.

I had expressed my discontent, but she'd simply told me calmly that she wasn't one to wear her heart on her sleeve. Looking back on it now, she had no trouble wearing her emotions; she just chose not to wear them for me.

After hanging up, she still had a smile on her face. Yet, the moment she saw me, it faded.

Charlotte walked past me indifferently with the gift box and shut the door behind her. I could tell she was still furious about how apathetic I had been the day before and had decided to punish me with the silent treatment.

Little did she know that, much earlier that day, her cold shoulder wouldn't rattle me anymore. I dug out the foreign language books I had laid aside for far too long.

Even though I was fluent in multiple foreign languages, I hadn't used them in ages, so I needed a refresher. When I took a break from studying, I casually scrolled through my social feed.

Sure enough, I came across Dustin's latest post. "Thank God for bringing you into my life."

The comment section was filled with well-wishes from Charlotte's tight-knit group of friends. Her best friends had always shipped her with Dustin and disliked me. Even though none of them had said it out loud, they never missed a chance to petty-slight me whenever they could.

I had complained to Charlotte about it before, but she had merely said, "That's all the more reason for you to step up and win them over."

I refreshed the app and noticed that Charlotte had also left a comment on his post, though it was nothing more than a single smiling emoji.

Suddenly, I got a notification that someone had tagged me. It was one of Charlotte's best friends. "I'm giving you a heads-up so you don't get into another argument with Lottie. The rest of us are here too, so it's just a normal get-together."

I was thoroughly amused by this whole situation. I replied with a simple "K", tossed my phone aside, washed up, and went straight to bed.

…

I was jolted awake in the middle of the night when the lights suddenly flickered on. I peeled my eyes open, and the first thing I saw was Charlotte staring straight at me.

"Wow, you really weren't concerned about me, huh? I was out all night, and you didn't even bother sending me a single message! My friends' phones were blowing up with calls from their boyfriends and husbands, urging them to come home, while I just waited there like a fool!"

I had been sleeping soundly when she woke me up, so I wasn't exactly pleased about it. I huffed, "You're a grown woman. Why would I worry about you just because you're out with your friends? I trust you.

"In any case, it's late. You should get some rest too."

Previously, whenever she hung out with Dustin, I would always make a huge scene. Even when I reluctantly agreed, I would inevitably bombard her with messages and calls throughout the night.

Charlotte had snapped at me, "This is a gathering for people in our circle. What does it have to do with you? I'm begging you. Please give me some personal space, Liam!"

The moment Charlotte ended the call, her phone started vibrating nonstop. Charlotte powered off her phone. Then she looked at me pleadingly. "Liam, can we still…"I stared at her blankly and sighed. "I'm going abroad. Let's part on—""No!" She looked at me imploringly. "Don't say it. I know you're going abroad. I… I…" As if she'd made up her mind, she declared, "I'll go with you!"I couldn't deny that her words had hit me like a bolt out of the blue. I knew how well her career was going here. All of her connections were here too. Now, for my sake, she was actually willing to give all of that up? When I remained silent, she wrapped her arms around me and choked out in my ear, "I know I messed up, Liam. Won't you please forgive me?" Memories of everything we'd been through together flashed through my mind, and my heart ached all over again. But for some reason, my mind was clearer than ever. "Let's break up, Charlotte."…From then on, I moved out of the house and checke

Charlotte was still hesitant, yet her actions betrayed her as she pulled over at the subway station. After I got out of the car, she called after me, "Are you… really going to be okay on your own?" I responded nonchalantly, "I'm a grown man. What could possibly go wrong on the subway? Off you go now. Don't keep him waiting." After she left, I strolled around and grabbed a bite at a nearby restaurant. Since I was leaving the country in a few days, I figured I might as well enjoy as much local food as possible before I left. I wandered around until late at night before heading home, only to realize I was home alone. That was pretty normal, though. Charlotte was probably still at Hannah's wedding. …The following day, when I got up and walked into the living room, I found Charlotte stock-still on the couch. The sound of my footsteps caught her attention, and our eyes met. I had no choice but to make small talk. "You're back already." Instead of answering, she just gazed

Charlotte went silent. I had just picked up the takeout bag and started toward the kitchen when she asked, "Aren't you upset?"I casually replied, "Why would I be upset? Didn't you tell me you and Dustin are ancient history and that he's just another friend in your circle now? Both of you were going to attend the wedding to begin with, so it's perfectly normal for you to go together." "Liam, let's talk—"I cut her off. "I'm sure you must be tired after taking care of Dustin all night. Get some rest and catch up on your sleep. I have something to take care of, so I'll leave you to it." With that, I took my laptop into the study. After closing the door, I started binge-watching a show. …Things remained awkward between us for the next few days. When Saturday rolled around, I got up to make breakfast, only to find it already laid out on the dining table. Charlotte smiled. "Eat up! I'll drive you to get your visa sorted afterward."I had completely forgotten about the lie I'd

In the past, when I asked Charlotte where she and her friends were going or when she'd be home, she got annoyed with me. "Can you stop interrogating me like my mom does? I'm not obligated to report my every move to you!" I'd apologized to her over and over before she reluctantly forgave me. She'd made sure to drill it into me afterward that I wasn't to pry into her business again. I replied with a "K" to let her know I had received her message. Charlotte: "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm crashing on the couch. I promise I won't cross the line!"I left her on read and hit the sack. The alcohol was taking its toll on me too. I slept like a log this time and didn't wake up until nearly lunchtime. I took one look at the time and decided I might as well have brunch. I ordered a plate of medium-spicy buffalo chicken pasta topped with a sunny-side-up egg. The pasta was delicious. I was slurping it down when Charlotte arrived home. She sniffed the air and wrinkled her nose slightly

My brows knitted together. Charlotte must've overheard my conversation with my coworkers. However, half an hour had passed since we talked about my trip abroad. Had she been waiting here all this time? My colleagues felt a little awkward about stumbling upon this situation and asked if I needed their help. I thanked them and assured them I could handle it on my own. After bidding farewell and reminding me to call if I needed help with anything, they took their leave."Answer me, Liam!" Her eyes were wide with distress. "Are you going abroad?" I nodded. Charlotte was bound to find out eventually."Why didn't you tell me beforehand? If I hadn't happened to overhear your conversation today, how long were you planning to keep this from me?" "Look, I was going to tell you, but I've been busy with the handover lately. Plus, you seem pretty busy yourself. I figured there was no need to bother you with something this trivial," I said flatly.Charlotte looked hurt. "How is this a tr

Charlotte stood rooted to the spot. I was about to lie back down when she abruptly seized my arm. "We need to talk," she blurted out.I looked at her exasperatedly. Charlotte took a deep breath and said, "That post was just a picture to mark our circle's get-together. There was nothing more to it. Don't read too much into it." I was so sleepy that I could barely keep my eyes open. Hence, I nodded rapidly. "Alright, I understand."Irritation flashed in her eyes. "Why are you stonewalling me? Are you still upset that I hung out with Dustin? I told you, he's just part of our friend group. "We used to date, but that's ancient history. If it bothers you that much, I'll take you with me to our future gatherings." I nodded repeatedly. "Got it. However, I'm dead tired. Can you please let me get back to bed now?" Charlotte fell silent. She sighed and started to get into bed, but I gasped. "What do you think you're doing?"She stiffened and shot me a cold look. Then she barged out
