Chapter 3

Autor: Waverly June
Mona texted me.

She sent me a long message. Every word she typed dripped with warning and condescension.

She wrote, "Since you insisted on contacting me, I'll make myself clear. First, don't contact me outside of work. I'm not interested in you. Second, please don't use your position to harass me in any way. It's causing me a lot of trouble.

"I already have a boyfriend, and we're very happy together. You're my senior. I hope you have a good sense of boundaries."

I read her self-righteous wall of text and couldn't help laughing in disbelief.

I didn't bother replying a single word. She was someone who lived in her own fantasy world. Sending even one punctuation mark in response would have been an insult to myself.

I placed my phone on the desk, leaned back in my chair, and closed my eyes. I wanted to see how long she planned to keep this little act going.

At 2:50 pm that afternoon, I gathered my materials and walked toward the conference room in Block A with Hannah and Oliver.

Hannah looked apologetic as she explained, "Cameron, I'm really sorry. I had no idea Mona would be so immature and cause you so much trouble. An old classmate of mine insisted on putting her on the team. He kept telling me how talented and creative she was.

"I didn't realize she'd be so unreasonable. I should have looked into her more carefully. I'll replace her later."

I shook my head and said, "This isn't your fault, Professor Fowler. I agreed to take her on myself. Let's have the meeting first and see how things go."

We were still more than 30 feet from the conference room when we heard bursts of barely suppressed laughter coming from inside.

It was Mona's voice, and she sounded smug.

"I'm telling you, Cameron is a coward. I completely destroyed him in the group chat last night. He hasn't said a word today. He's obviously feeling diffident. He thought being the vice president of the student council made him such a big deal. My boyfriend could beat him with one finger!"

Another girl chimed in, "Mon, is your boyfriend really that impressive?"

Mona's voice rose several pitches, and it was overflowing with pride. "Of course! My boyfriend's name is Louis Harmon. He's a college senior, and he's already gotten an internship offer from Drakos Group. You guys know Drakos Group, right? They're the sponsor of this competition and the best tech company in our country.

"He said that once his internship is over, he'll definitely get a full-time position. He'll be a project supervisor making at least a few hundred thousand dollars a year. Once Louis gets hired full-time, I can do whatever I want on this campus. Who'd dare mess with me?

"Even that lousy student council president will have to bow and scrape whenever he sees me!"

Another student gazed at her with envious eyes. "Wow, so you'll be the CEO's wife someday."

Mona laughed animatedly, looking extremely pleased. "The CEO's wife? No, Louis says he'll definitely become a project manager within three years and a director within five. He's incredibly capable and handsome. Girls throw themselves at him, trying to get his attention, but he only has eyes for me."

The conference room door wasn't fully closed, so a narrow gap remained. Every single one of her outrageous words came through loud and clear.

Hannah's face flushed and paled before finally turning ashen and grim. She clenched her fists and quickened her pace, ready to storm inside.

I reached out and stopped her.

Mona shrieked, "You were the one who said that as long as we got close to Cameron, we'd be able to rise straight to the top! You said he must be interested in me, and that if I cried and made a scene, he'd give in!"The security guards rushed over and finally managed to pull them apart after an enormous struggle. The entire scene was a complete mess, but it was undeniably entertaining.Edwin came hurrying over to me, drenched in sweat. He looked so troubled that he was trembling. He apologized, "I'm so sorry, Mr. Westin! It was our negligence that led to these people disturbing you. We're very sorry."I waved my hand, signaling that he didn't need to make such a fuss. Then, I took another glass of champagne from a passing server's tray. I leaned back against the couch, shook my head, and wore the faintest hint of a smile.I had to admit that the farce that had unfolded before me was far more entertaining than the boring singing and dancing performances at the gala. With that, ev

My father, Albert, chairman of Drakos Group, appeared on the screen for everyone to see.The entire venue fell into pin-drop silence. The guests who had been pointing fingers at me just moments earlier now stared at the screen in disbelief.Dad's voice rang out clearly through the venue's top-of-the-line sound system. "I heard someone was trying to make a deal with my son to secure a position at Drakos Group."His gaze seemed to pierce straight through the screen and land precisely on Chris, whose face had gone white. The wine glass in his hand fell to the floor with a sharp crack. Champagne spilled everywhere as a result. His fat cheeks trembled, and cold sweat soaked through his shirt.Dad said, "Mr. Long, we have long suspected your private equity fund is used for illegal fundraising and insider trading. I've had the evidence in my hands for some time. Just a minute ago, I sent it to the Securities and Exchange Commission's email. "Be mentally prepared for an investigation to

I said indifferently, "Go ahead."When Louis saw that nothing he said could sway me, he dropped the act.He raised his voice and shouted to everyone around us. "Everyone, come take a look! Come see and judge for yourselves! The student council vice president is abusing his authority and taking revenge on an ordinary student!"He pointed at me with the indignance of a wronged man. His performance was almost award-worthy."Just because my girlfriend rejected him and didn't put up with his harassment, he's trying to prevent my full-time employment at Drakos Group and ruin my future! Is this how a huge, reputable company treats its employees?"His outburst had an immediate effect. The guests nearby were drawn over. They started whispering among themselves and pointing at me.Mona reacted even faster. The moment Louis finished speaking, she dropped to the floor with a thud and started crying inconsolably. She wrapped both arms around Louis' legs and sobbed her heart out.She cried,

Louis said, "I'm almost done with my internship too. I was wondering... if there might be a chance for you to look out for me and help me move up? Mon has always admired you. She keeps saying she wished she had a chance to apologize to you in person."They had humbled themselves as much as they could. But in their darting eyes, I saw no remorse. I saw ambition and a much bigger storm brewing.Watching their pathetic performance, I sneered inwardly. They were unbelievably stupid.Their fake display of humility didn't move me in the slightest. I simply held my wine glass and looked at them coldly without saying a word. When Louis realized that the soft approach wasn't working, his expression shifted instantly. The ingratiating smile disappeared. In its place was a threatening look."Mr. Westin, let's be straight with each other," Louis said.He finally dropped the disgusting act, and his voice turned icy. "I know you're Albert Westin's son. Someone like me is nothing in your eyes."

Hannah nodded with a serious expression. "I agree with Cameron."She turned to Mona and said, "Mona, go back and wait for the college's verdict. What you did today has damaged the reputation of the college and your fellow students. College management will look into this."I didn't spare her another glance. I turned to the other team members and said, "Alright. We've gotten rid of the irrelevant person. Let's get started."I led the other team members around Mona, who was still sitting on the floor sobbing hysterically. Ignoring her, we went straight into discussing the project. No one gave Mona another second of attention. It was as if she'd merely been an insignificant interruption.Only when she realized that everyone was ignoring her did she finally slink away with her tail between her legs. After the meeting ended, I received a call from Edwin Cook, the head of the college's student affairs department. He sounded extremely nervous on the phone. "We're very sorry, Mr. Westi

Mona said, "Cam... No, I mean Mr. Westin... It was all a misunderstanding. That's all."Her fawning voice made my skin crawl.I cut her off immediately, "Call me Cameron."She nodded eagerly. "Yes, yes… Sure thing, Cameron."I ignored her and picked up one page from her project proposal off the table. I tapped the title heavily with the tip of my pen.My voice was cold and completely devoid of emotion. "For your market analysis, you copied data that was three years outdated straight from Google. You didn't even bother looking at the latest industry reports. Your technical concept never made it past the PowerPoint stage. "You cited several technical terms without even understanding their most basic definitions. Your project budget is completely detached from reality. You budgeted three million dollars for promoting a simple app. Were you planning to hire a top celebrity as its spokesperson?"Is this the so-called work you'd been preparing for a long time? Is this seriously what
