Chapter 3

Author: Mountain
Oliver strode in. When he saw Mia gripping my hand, his face darkened.

"Let go."

Mia hesitated, but she let go.

I rubbed my sore wrist, took back the black envelope, and told Oliver what she'd done.

"She wants to take the safe house keys, the informant list, and the offshore account keys, and she tried to force me to sign the transfer agreement and put everything in your name.

"And that's not all. She wants to use me as a bargaining chip and marry me off to the Velli family on the East Coast to end the feud between our families. And she said once I'm gone, your child can take over the Norman family!"

Oliver frowned.

"Mia, did you say that?"

Mia's eyes instantly welled up, as if she'd been terribly wronged.

"Oliver, I did this for you."

She pointed at the papers.

"For ten years, you've run the docks and cleaned up every mess in every business. But Sofia? She doesn't even know how much the family makes in a year, and she still thinks she gets to call the shots!"

Oliver didn't say anything, so I cut in.

"Because I do."

Mia whipped around to look at me.

"See! She actually believes it."

At that, Oliver suddenly looked conflicted.

Mia grabbed his hand.

"You said it yourself. The Don was just indulging her. He was afraid it would look bad if she couldn't run the family, so he made up that stamping rule to have you go through the motions with her every year.

"And now look. She actually thinks she's the heir."

Oliver didn't answer. Instead, he gave me an apologetic look.

As I looked at his face, the last bit of hope I'd been clinging to faded away.

He believed it too.

For ten years, I'd solemnly handed him that power every year, and all along, he thought he was just going through the motions, playing a game with a spoiled princess.

"So you always thought my golden lion seal was just part of a game to keep me happy?"

I watched him and waited for his answer.

Oliver was quiet for a while, then sighed.

"Sofia, that's how it was. When you were little, you couldn't learn how to run the family business, so the Don let you have your way because he felt bad for you. Having me wait for your stamp every year was just to make you feel involved."

Seeing Oliver take her side, Mia was instantly smug. The wounded look from a minute ago was gone without a trace.

"You've done whatever you wanted all these years, but you really don't understand the business.

"I told you. Oliver is the one holding the Norman family together."

I turned to Oliver. "So her taking my offshore account keys wasn't wrong either?"

He frowned.

"Mia went a little too far, but the offshore keys are family secrets. You have no use for them. It wouldn't hurt to let her keep them from now on."

I took a deep breath and fought down my anger. "And this marriage?"

He paused.

"It's just a first meeting. The Velli family has a lot to offer. You're going to marry for the family sooner or later anyway. If it helps settle the feud, it'll be good for our family."

I almost laughed out loud.

Members of the Norman family never marry into another family.

Oliver had been in the family for ten years. There was no way he didn't know that rule.

But now, he thought he had the right to abolish even that rule.

I felt drained. I didn't want to argue anymore. I asked just one question.

"What if this year, I don't stamp it?"

Mia laughed first. "Sofia, who do you think you are, still trying to scare us with that?"

Oliver's expression hardened. "Don't be difficult, Sofia. It's just a ceremony. Without your golden lion seal, you think every Norman business is going to shut down?"

When I didn't say anything, his tone softened a little.

"If you're really upset, I'll take you out somewhere, and we'll put this behind us. From now on, Mia will handle the internal affairs. You're grown up. It's time you did your part for the family."

Mia walked over to him with a smile and gently wrapped her arms around him.

"Watch yourself from now on, Sofia. Every cent you spend has to go through me first."

I looked at the two of them pressed together, and my heart went cold, bit by bit.

Finally, I gave them a thin, icy smile. "Fine. See you at the annual meeting."

I hoped they could afford what this was going to cost them.

Oliver didn't notice anything had changed in me. He thought I'd given in, and before he left, he said one more thing.

"Let Mia keep the safe house keys and the account keys for now. Behave yourself, and I'll put in a good word for you at the annual meeting."

I ignored him, tucked the black envelope back inside my jacket, and walked straight out.

When I got back, I called in my deputy, Augie.

Augie had been with me for 11 years. When the Don brought him in off the docks, he was 19, and two fingers on one hand no longer worked.

These days he handled three things: the family's cars, the family's guns, and every underground deal the family didn't want written in the books.

I closed the door and had him sit down.

"For this year's annual meeting, get every dock and crew boss to headquarters. No exceptions."

Augie looked surprised for a moment, then said, "Yes."

I heard that when Oliver got home and Mia found out he'd handed over his seal for good, she threw a huge fit.Shut away in their room, she had her first real screaming match with Oliver."You're just going to accept this?"You spent ten years building this, and now you're throwing it all away?"Oliver's reply was short."It was never mine."Mia went completely quiet. After a while, she spoke again, her voice low."You didn't even ask me."Oliver looked at her for a long moment before he answered."You sold those three casinos dirt cheap."And while I was out working, you went behind my back and made trouble for Sofia."Did you ask me about any of that? Were you really thinking about me?"Neither of them said another word. That night she sat alone on the porch until the early hours.First thing the next morning, she packed her things and went back to the Nolan family. Before she left, she came to see me once. She stood at the gate of the estate, looking much worse than when she'd first

Three days later, Oliver came to see me alone. This time, Mia didn't come with him.He didn't bring a contract or a ledger. He just sat across from me and didn't say anything for a long time.In the end, I was the one who spoke first."What do you want to ask?"Oliver stared at the golden lion seal on the table, his voice quiet and uncertain."So what was I, all those ten years?"That caught me off guard for a second."You were the Norman family's advisor."He gave a crooked, bitter smile."The one-year-at-a-time kind?""Right."Oliver closed his eyes."But back then, the Don told me flat out that it was just a ceremony I had to go through with you every year."I thought about it and remembered what the Don had said."He wasn't wrong."Oliver looked up."What do you mean?""For me, it really was just a ceremony."Because I wanted you as my advisor every year for ten years."He froze.I slid the old records across the table to him. Augie had brought them over.Every year after the annua

After the annual meeting, once most of the crowd in the main hall had cleared out, Oliver called me into a side room."Sofia, let's talk. Just us."I didn't say no.Ten years together was worth at least one conversation.Oliver closed the door and got straight to the point."I misunderstood the Norman family's rules before. But replacing me now might not be the smart move."That made a lot more sense than Mia's ranting.I nodded for him to go on.Oliver leaned back against the wall, his face serious."I built the dock union myself."Our contacts on the Balkan route only honor the prices I negotiate, and many of our managers have worked under me for at least eight years."You can declare my seal invalid today."He paused, a note of confidence in his voice."But loyalty isn't something a seal can replace."I gave a small nod."Fair enough. What do you want?"Oliver looked at me, sincere but still a little proud."Renew my appointment for another year, like always. We can forget about the

Mia was the first to lose her composure."What's there to go through? Oliver has been in charge for ten years. When has anything ever gone wrong?"I nodded."So first, we'll give him credit for his work. Then we'll settle accounts with you both for what you've done these past few days."Oliver looked up at me and straightened his back."Sofia, my conscience is clear.""Good."I had Augie open last year's master ledger.Credit where it was due: Oliver had never cooked the books.Last year, the family's net profit was ten percent higher than the year before. He was the one who'd secured the Balkan arms supply line. He'd cleaned up after the shooting at the port, and he'd settled a few old business debts himself.I closed the first volume."Oliver served the family well. By the rules, he gets every cent of his share and his year-end bonus."Mia seized on that."You hear that? The Norman family makes this kind of money because of Oliver, doesn't it?"I looked at her."And?"That shut her u

When everyone in the hall saw that, they quietly set down their glasses.Nobody dared move. The room fell silent.Oliver stared at me in disbelief."Sofia."He'd been silent for a long while before he finally said it, his voice lower than usual."Stop this. The family's managers are all watching."Stamp it with the golden lion seal, and I'll pretend this never happened."I let my gaze travel over every face in the room.Mia slammed her palm on the table."Just because I lectured you a little the other day? You had to make a scene at the annual meeting?"Oliver has run the Norman family for ten years. He's handled the docks, the trade association, and the underground casinos himself. The people in this family have long since accepted him. And now you suddenly refuse to stamp it? You really think they'll go along with that?"She wasn't wrong about that.Oliver hadn't held on to his position just because of the Norman name. For ten years, he'd kept the docks running without a hitch, and w

Mia thought she'd already won.The next day, she sent people to headquarters to collect the safe house network keys, the offshore account keys, and the informant list, saying she'd keep them safe for me.The butler didn't dare cross her, but behind her back, he quietly brought everything to me.I barely glanced at them. "Give them to her."The butler panicked. "Princess, these are family secrets."I shook my head. "Give her the fake set. And make sure you tell her that if anything goes wrong, Oliver takes full responsibility."The butler was taken aback for a second, then said, "Understood."The fake set had been prepared in advance to protect the real secrets. Now it was finally coming in handy. That afternoon, Mia sent people to clear out my east-side villa. She said it got plenty of sun and would be perfect for the baby once she and Oliver had one.I watched the servants carry box after box out of the villa. By then, I barely felt anything.Their greed only made it easier for me to
