Chapter 2

Autor: A Flying Fish
Miriam looked at Cedric standing next to her and said with quiet resolve, "I understand the responsibilities that come with being the heir to Wiley Group.

"But I believe running this conglomerate effectively requires competence and savvy, not leveraging on a spouse's connections. I intend to earn the status I want on my own merits, and not through anyone else."

With these words, the banquet hall fell into a brief, dead silence.

Fabian's face turned ashen, a vein throbbing visibly at his temple.

I lowered my head and fiddled with my fingers, the corner of my mouth curling into a faint smile.

Miriam was truly as proud and unyielding to the bone as ever.

Unfortunately, she'd forgotten that when Wiley Group was in crisis years ago, it was precisely because my family extended a helping hand that Fabian was able to turn things around.

After that, Fabian made a verbal agreement with my father, Bruno Keller, that Miriam would marry me.

"Fine, very well." Fabian, furious to the extreme, slammed the table with a sharp bang. "Since you're so capable, I'll grant your wish. We'll just see how long you can hold out!"

With that, he stormed off. Verna also hurriedly rose to follow him.

Miriam fell into Cedric's arms and promised solemnly, "Don't worry. The position as my family's son-in-law will always be yours. No one can ever take it from you!"

Watching the two of them lost in each other's affection, I was just about to leave when Miriam softly called out, "Wait a moment."

Pushing aside Cedric's supportive hand, she stumbled slightly but caught herself and came after me alone.

She leaned close to my ear and said in a voice only the two of us could hear, "Quintin, have you also been reborn with your memories? I suppose you've learned better this time—you don't stand in Cedric's way again.

"If it weren't for you meddling in our previous lives, causing me to lose Cedric, I wouldn't have been so ruthless toward you. As long as you stay in your place in this life, I can spare you and your family.

"But if you insist on staying by my side, I'll be blunt—I won't give you any title or status."

I raised an eyebrow slightly, feigning confusion. "Ms. Wiley, what are you talking about? Though my family may not be some distinguished clan, we still have our pride. There's no such thing as me being your 'kept man' in our principles."

I looked up, meeting her gaze straight on. I didn't want her to learn more, nor did I want the bloody grudges of our past loves to bring disaster upon my family once again.

Glancing down, I caught sight of her still-blackened arm and laughed inwardly.

Did she think a few pleasant words could erase the blood debt from our past lives?

Miriam must have underestimated me.

As soon as the poison took hold in her right arm, she would be fighting for her very life.

Not wanting to engage any further, I scoffed and mercilessly shook off her hand.

"Ms. Wiley, did you wake up on the crazy side of the bed today? You're making zero sense."

With that, I stepped around her and walked briskly away.

Miriam rushed to catch me. Then, to my surprise, she lost her balance and fell.

Cedric let out a terrified shout, "Miriam!"

I straightened my cuff without so much as looking back.

Heaven had granted me a new life, and I would never let anyone harm my family or me again.

Early the next morning, I heard the frantic shouts of household staff downstairs, warning of intruders.

Cedric stormed in, eyes red with fury. He then pointed at me and shouted accusingly, "Quintin Keller, as the heir of a distinguished family, you lack for nothing! So, why must you steal Miriam away from me? Don't you know she was supposed to be mine?"

I sat up straight away, my hair still a mess.

"I think you've got the wrong person. When have I ever competed with you over anything?"

"Why you!" Cedric trembled, eyes becoming even more bloodshot. "Then what did you two talk about yesterday? After Miriam fainted, she kept calling out your name!" he asked resentfully.

I raised an eyebrow, my tone so light it was almost amused. "Didn't she tell you? She's begging to marry me now."

I paused for a moment, finding the whole thing utterly absurd.Even now, Miriam still believed there was a place for her in my heart.Edwina, standing beside me, suddenly reached up and unfastened an earring, revealing a brilliant flash of light."Ms. Wiley, are you referring to this?" she asked calmly and gently twirled the emerald earring under the light, her smile bright and unrestrained. "Quintin picked this out for me himself, and it fits perfectly."Miriam's expression stiffened, her eyes filled with disbelief. "Impossible. How could you have known her so early on? I refuse to believe you could move on from me so quickly."She stared stubbornly at me, refusing to let go.I looked down at her with a smirk."I've changed my mind. Letting you die like this would be far too merciful. I want you to watch as your whole body rots away, and yet there's nothing you can do about it. After all, a living hell is so much more interesting."The corrosive toxin will stay with you for th

"That's nonsense! It wasn't me! It really wasn't!" Cedric pressed his hand hard against the floor, sobbing as he shook his head frantically.Miriam stared at him coldly, still unable to believe that the person who had harmed her was the one she trusted the most.Just then, a bodyguard dragged in the folk healer. The man fell to his knees and pleaded in a trembling voice, "Ms. Wiley, have mercy! I only did what Mr. Campbell ordered me to do. I warned him about the side effects of that antidote, but he insisted he'd accept whatever happened to you after you took it."Those words pierced Miriam's heart like a nail driven deep. The folk healer then pulled a voice recorder from his pocket. Once he pressed play, Cedric's voice echoed out."As long as Miriam can make it to the wedding, it doesn't matter how much she rots afterward. All you have to do is say yes!"That opened a whole new can of worms. The truth was instantly laid bare before everyone's eyes.Miriam suddenly raised her

Cedric refused to let anyone near."Miriam promised to marry me! No one can tear us apart!"I waited for him to be exposed in front of everyone, to experience firsthand the pain I had endured in my previous life.In the next moment, a scream suddenly echoed from outside the door."Who gave you permission to lay hands on him?"In an instant, everyone froze in shock. The woman who had been lying in the hospital bed, sustained only by a ventilator, was now walking toward them with steady, determined strides."Ms. Wiley actually woke up? Wasn't she in a deep coma the whole time?""I heard Cedric tried all sorts of unconventional methods. Who would have thought that with so many specialists at a loss, he actually managed to cure her?""It looks like he really is going to become the Wiley family's son-in-law."Verna's face lit up with barely concealed joy.Cedric roughly shoved away the bodyguards restraining him and held Miriam in his arms."Miriam, everyone started picking on m

Once Fabian and Verna were gone, Cedric hurried to Miriam's bedside. He had thought her waking was a sign of hope, but in the blink of an eye, she fell back into a deep coma. The attending doctors hurriedly adjusted the machines, their voices tinged with helplessness."Ms. Wiley's condition is very critical now. The toxins have already entered her nervous system. I-It's best to start preparing for the worst.""Shut up!" Cedric roared, then turned and knelt by the hospital bed. "Miriam will be fine! She promised to marry me. There's no way she'll leave me all alone."I stood behind Cedric, watching him coldly. Those who once brought me to ruin were now tasting the consequences of their own actions. He was already starting to lose it, and all it needed was one final push.I stepped forward slowly and looked down at his frenzied, pathetic state. A low, cold chuckle escaped my lips."Cedric, when you had Snowball killed, did you ever think retribution would come this quickly?"H

I sat in the back seat of the car and slowly rolled up the window, shutting out the clamor outside completely.Miriam's retribution had only just begun.Although she was critically injured when bitten by the venomous snake last time, she took the antidote in time and survived.Even she herself didn't think much of it. Instead, she felt she had given Cedric a chance to shine, which allowed him to rightfully become her husband. She thought she had everything under control, but she didn't realize the neurotoxin was still active in her system. If she had obediently followed the doctor's orders to rest and cooperate with the hospital treatment, she would have naturally recovered slowly.Yet, Cedric used his fabricated "hero" status to win over the Wiley family and become their son-in-law.How could the scion from other prominent families, who had hoped to form an alliance through marriage with the Wileys, possibly accept this?Open mockery and behind-the-scenes power struggles became

As soon as I finished speaking, a gleam of surprise appeared in Edwina's eyes.A smile played at the corner of her lips, as if she had finally got what she wanted for a long time."Deal. Don't you dare go back on your word." Without asking a single question, she only whispered as she passed me by, "Wait for me, alright?"Then, she left in high spirits, leaving only her retreating figure behind.Early the next morning, Edwina arrived with her parents to formally discuss our marriage. The gifts they brought were exquisite, each one precious and prepared in two identical sets.Dad couldn't stop smiling. He had always hoped for a marriage alliance between Miriam and me, but since she was determined to be with Cedric, who had no family background to speak of, Dad had finally given up on that dream entirely. In contrast, Edwina conducted herself with grace, and every move she made was filled with sincerity. As soon as the engagement was confirmed, gifts from the Simpson family piled
