Chapter 1

Autor: Not Drunk
As I walked out of the prison gates, a guard called after me. "You earned an early release for good behavior. Go home and be with your family, and don't come back."

Then, he held out his hand and said, "You've got another shot at life. Make it count."

I shook it and stepped into the outside world.

Jessica Wright stood outside the prison gates with our daughter, Penny Joyner, holding her hand. Neither of them looked happy to see me.

Jessica glanced at her watch, clearly impatient. "I don't know why they had to release you today. You ruined the holiday."

Penny looked up at me with innocent eyes. "Dad, you're nothing but trouble."

I stood there in the same worn-out clothes I had worn before going to prison.

For a brief moment, I actually wanted to go back inside.

But I hadn't seen my grandmother, Martha Penn, in three years. I needed to see her before I could feel at ease.

"Now that you're out, let's not bring up the past." Jessica glanced at me, her eyes filled with disdain for my appearance.

"I'll help you find a job. Just keep your mouth shut," she said.

She was referring to the fact that I had taken the fall for her first love, Caleb Moore. I looked at her blankly. "I want to see Grandma."

If Jessica hadn't used Grandma's illness to manipulate me, I never would've gone to prison for Caleb.

Grandma had raised me on her own. Just when life was finally getting better, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The doctors said they caught it early, meaning she had a strong chance at a full recovery. However, the treatment was very expensive—though that alone wasn't enough to make me willingly take the blame for Caleb.

It was Penny's words that had destroyed the last bit of hope I had left.

Just like now, she had looked at me with the same innocent expression and said something both naive and cruel. "Dad, why won't you help Uncle Caleb? You don't make money, and you never buy me dolls. Why can't Uncle Caleb be my father?

"Dad, please help him just this once. Uncle Caleb will take good care of Mom and me."

The look on her face back then was identical to the one she wore now.

At that moment, she tugged on Jessica's sleeve and kept whining, "Mom, I don't want Dad. He stinks! I don't want him at my party!"

Jessica sighed helplessly, picked her up, and tried to comfort her. "Penny, don't say that."

Then she frowned at me. "Jake, it's Christmas dinner tonight. Since you're out, come with us."

I took a step back and shook my head. "Jessica, I want to see Grandma."

Jessica suddenly snapped. "Did spending three years in prison teach you nothing? I dropped everything at home just to pick you up.

"Mom and Dad are waiting for you at home. Can't you at least do this for me?

"Listen—if you don't come with us for Christmas dinner today, don't expect me to tell you where Martha is."

The police officers heard Jessica and Caleb's entire scheme loud and clear through the wire. By the time the authorities hauled both of them away in handcuffs, Penny was still frantically clinging to my leg, screaming and crying. In her distorted little world, I was the villain who had destroyed her happy family. I crouched down, meeting her tear-streaked face at eye-level. "Penny, look at me. Who am I to you?" I asked softly."You're a bad person!" She lashed out, punching my chest with her fists while smearing her tears and snot all over my shirt. I remained completely silent for a long moment before gently prying her fingers loose and handing her over to Bertha and Gary. "Please take good care of Penny from now on," I said quietly. "I'll send money for her living and educational expenses regularly."Bertha clutched a trembling Penny to her chest, glaring at me with dark, venomous eyes. "She's Jessica's daughter, so of course we'll take care of her!" she snapped. "Tomo

Caleb kept stomping on the phone until he was sure it wouldn't turn on again. He glared at me with pure venom. "Jake, you're already out of prison. Are you really trying to destroy Jessie's and Penny's lives now?"He was so consumed by rage that he completely lost control and blurted out the truth without thinking. "Yes, I ran over someone! So what? I only had a little to drink, and the guy just happened to be in my way. He deserved to die!"Jake, if you want someone to blame, blame yourself for being unlucky. No one cares about you, and no one loves you!""Caleb, stop talking!" Jessica rushed over and clamped a hand over his mouth. Then she turned to look at me, her expression dripping with cold disappointment. "Jake, I never thought you would become a monster like this."She completely ignored Penny's shrill crying and her parents standing frozen in shock nearby. Without another word, Jessica walked into the back room and brought out a plain ceramic jar. She meticulously wi

Early on the second day after Christmas, I knocked on the Wright family's front door.Penny opened the door. The moment she saw me, she pouted. "It's stinky Dad. I don't want to see you!"I wanted to comfort her, but I pulled my hand back. From the moment she chose Caleb as her father, I stopped thinking of Penny as my daughter.I pulled out a small gift from my pocket and handed it to her.Without another word, I brushed past her, took off my coat, and headed inside.Zane had taken my case seriously after hearing what I had to say the day before. However, my word alone wasn't enough to overturn a conviction and prove what had actually happened back then; I needed hard evidence.I already had an old audio recording of them pressuring me to take the fall for Caleb, but I was still missing the definitive evidence to tear their lies apart. After turning it over in my mind, I realized I had to walk straight into the lion's den and force their hands. "Jake, you're here." When C

"If Penny's friends find out her real father is a criminal, she could get bullied," Jessica said."So?" I replied. I had no idea what she was trying to get at."What I'm trying to say is you still need to keep the truth about taking the fall for Caleb a secret," she said.I barked out a harsh laugh.Jessica was supposed to be my wife. Yet, she brought Penny to see me on Christmas Day only to ask me to carry someone else's crime for the rest of my life."Jessica, I'm not agreeing to that," I said. "Now that Grandma is gone, what else do you have left to threaten me with?"I looked at the Christmas wreath on the front door and thought of all the Christmases I had spent with Grandma. She used to craft the wreath herself, smiling warmly as she watched me reach up to hang it. Eventually, I didn't have to stand on tiptoes anymore, but Grandma's back grew more and more stooped with each passing year.Jessica followed my gaze toward the door and scoffed quietly. "Don't you want to kn

Jessica looked at me. Exhaustion was written all over her face."Jake, let's talk."My first instinct was to refuse.During those three years in prison, she could have talked to me anytime she wanted. There was no need to pretend now and act like I was the one who had let everyone down. When I didn't answer, she quickly said, "Penny is already asleep. Don't worry. Please don't take what she said today to heart. Kids have short memories. She'll forget what happened soon enough."Jake, now that you're out, you should just try to live a normal life."There was pity in her voice. She made it sound like I was the one who had done something unforgivable.Three years had passed, and even she had seemingly forgotten why I ended up in prison in the first place. "Jessica, have you really forgotten, or are you just pretending? I went to prison in Caleb's place."Her expression stiffened before she offered an excuse. "Caleb is about to get promoted. You getting released now could hurt hi

Penny's words knocked the wind entirely out of my lungs. I lunged forward, grabbing Jessica by the collar with wild eyes. "Jessica, where is Grandma?"My sudden violence terrified her, and she stumbled over her words. "J-Jake, don't do anything stupid!"Caleb rushed over, aggressively tearing Jessica away from my grip and pulling her into his arms. "We didn't tell you about Martha because we knew you couldn't handle it."You're the one who got yourself thrown in prison. Someone must have tipped her off about your sentence, and she got into a fatal car accident while desperately trying to track you down."There was an unmistakable tone of smug satisfaction in Caleb's voice. He was thoroughly enjoying watching me unravel. I was furious, entirely unhinged, and behaving like a madman. Naturally, no one cared about my perspective, let alone believed a word I said. The Wrights' relatives immediately swarmed in with their own toxic judgments. "I honestly have no idea what Jessic
