Chapter 39

The air in the dance studio was tense as the dance master’s sharp voice echoed across the room.

“You’re out!” He snapped at one of the girls, who left with her head hanging low. One by one, the weaker dancers were weeded out until only three remained: Kate, Grace, and another girl, Hayley.

Kate stood at the barre, her body aching from hours of practice, yet her heart raced with a mix of anticipation and dread. She glanced at Grace, who looked effortlessly composed as always, and then at Hayley, whose sly grin suggested she didn’t mind the chaos around them.

When practice ended, the three girls retreated to the changing room, shedding their leotards for more comfortable outfits. The harsh fluorescent lights softened in this space, and for the first time, they felt like they could let their guards down.

“Finally,” Grace said, breaking the silence. “I was starting to think this practice would never end. Can you imagine how ridiculous the others must feel, being cut like that?” She flipped her hair over her shoulder, her tone both smug and casual.

Hayley snorted. “Guess it pays to be good at everything, huh, Grace?”

Grace smirked. “Well, I’ve always been good at everything I do. Dancing is no exception.”

Kate stayed quiet, tying her sneakers and pretending not to listen, but Hayley noticed. She leaned closer to Kate with a teasing grin. “And what about you, Kate? Your mom still running your life?”

Grace jumped in, laughing. “Oh, you have no idea. Kate’s mom is something else. Did you know her parents tried to engage her to her childhood crush? It’s like they’re living in the 1800s.”

Kate’s cheeks flushed. “Can we not talk about my mom?” she muttered, her voice tight.

Hayley frowned, her playful demeanor shifting. “That’s insane. Kate, why do you let them control you like that? Everyone’s got a reason to stay quiet, but at some point, you’ve got to kick it in the ass and take control. You’ll do it when you’re ready, right?”

Kate shrugged, feeling the weight of Hayley’s words. She wanted to believe she could stand up for herself, but it wasn’t that simple.

Grace, clearly bored with the serious turn in the conversation, changed the subject. “Anyway, we should celebrate. Tomorrow’s our last class, and after that, it’ll just be the final two of us left to compete.”

Kate sighed. “I’m not even hoping to win.”

Grace raised an eyebrow. “Oh, please. That’s just because your mom wants you to win. You’ve got this rebellious streak now, don’t you? But let’s not pretend you don’t want it for yourself, too.”

Without waiting for a response, Grace grabbed her bag and left.

Kate leaned back against the lockers, feeling strange. Her body felt off—like something was shifting inside her. She chalked it up to the stress of the competition, but the feeling lingered.

Hayley, noticing Kate’s distraction, gave her a nudge. “You okay?”

Kate nodded. “Yeah, just tired.”

Hayley smiled. “You’ll be fine. You know, I love to dance too, but I don’t let it define me. I’m graduating with a degree in psychology soon. And yeah, I sing sometimes, but it’s just for me. At the end of the day, you’ve got to be your own biggest fan because you’ll face it all alone.”

Kate looked at her, surprised by the depth of her words. “You’re full of wisdom, huh?”

Hayley laughed. “It’s just the truth. Listen, Kate, I know you want to win for yourself, not for anyone else. So stop holding back. Just go for it.”

Kate smiled, a genuine one this time. “Thanks, Hayley. Guess we’re best friends now.”

Hayley grinned. “Guess so.”

Kate’s phone buzzed, and she checked the screen. “Seth’s outside waiting for me. I should go.”

“Have fun,” Hayley called after her.

As Kate walked to Seth’s car, she felt a mixture of excitement and nerves. Sliding into the passenger seat, she started some small talk as the car moved.

“So,” she began, glancing at him, “why the sudden change in lifestyle? You’re different these days.”

Seth laughed, his hands steady on the wheel. “What do you mean?”

Kate hesitated, then asked bluntly, “You’re not into drugs, are you?”

He burst out laughing, the sound easing some of her tension. “No, Kate. I’m not into drugs. My job is honest, I promise.”

Before she could respond, he leaned over and kissed her. “That’s for now,” he said softly.

Kate’s heart raced as they pulled up to his apartment building. She followed him inside, only to stop short when she saw a familiar figure waiting in the lobby.

Liam.

His presence was a shock, and the tension in the air was immediate. Kate’s eyes darted to Seth, whose expression hardened.

“What are you doing here?” Seth asked, his voice low and controlled.

Liam turned, his gaze settling on Kate. “I came to talk to her.”

Kate froze, unsure of what to say. The funny feeling in her body intensified, a mix of fear and adrenaline coursing through her.

Seth stepped in front of her protectively. “You’ve got no business here, Liam. Leave.”

Liam didn’t move. “This isn’t over,” he said, his eyes narrowing before he turned and walked out.

The tension lingered even after he was gone. Seth looked at Kate, concern etched on his face. “You okay?”

Kate nodded, but she couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in her chest. Whatever Liam wanted, it couldn’t be good.

She was proud of how far she had come. The crisp autumn air carried the scent of fallen leaves, and Kate tightened her scarf around her neck as she made her way to the parking lot. Her classes for the day were over, and she was eager to get home to Emma. But first, she had a familiar face to meet. Chapter 49 The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of Kate’s apartment, casting a warm glow over the living room. She sat on the couch, her phone pressed to her ear, listening to her mother’s excited chatter about wedding plans. Her mother’s voice was animated, filled with the kind of enthusiasm that only a parent could muster when discussing their child’s future. But Kate’s mind was elsewhere, her thoughts swirling with uncertainty and a growing sense of unease. “Mom, I’m not ready to get married,” Kate finally interjected, her voice firm but gentle. She twisted a strand of hair around her finger, a nervous habit she had carried since childhood. “I still have so much to figure out. College, my career, this baby… I just don’t think now is the right time.” There was a pause on the other end of the line, and Kate could almost picture her mother’s face—her brows furrowed, her lips pressed into a thin line of disappointment. But when her mother spoke again, her tone was softer, m

Chapter 48Kate lay in bed, the soft morning light filtering through the curtains of Seth’s bedroom. The sheets were warm, the room quiet except for the steady rhythm of Seth’s breathing beside her. She turned her head slightly, watching him as he slept, his face relaxed and peaceful. The events of the previous day replayed in her mind like a vivid dream, each moment etched with emotion and significance. Her thoughts drifted to the meeting with Seth’s father, Edward. It had been a whirlwind of introductions, apologies, and unexpected warmth. Edward had greeted her with a kindness that immediately put her at ease, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. “I’ve been trying to get Seth to bring you home for months,” Edward had said, his voice tinged with amusement. “But he’s been like a goofy kid, always talking about you but never actually introducing you. I was starting to think you were a figment of his imagination.” Kate had laughed at that, the sound light and genuine.

Chapter 47Kate sat in the waiting room of the clinic, her fingers nervously tapping against the armrest of the chair. The test was just a formality, she already knew. The subtle changes in her body, the fatigue, the nausea, it all pointed to one thing. But she needed to see it for herself, to have that confirmation in her hands. When the nurse finally called her name, Kate followed her into the examination room, her heart pounding. The doctor was kind, her smile reassuring as she handed Kate the results. “Congratulations,” the doctor said warmly. “You’re pregnant.” Kate stared at the paper, her vision blurring with tears. It was real. She was going to be a mother. Later, as she sat in her car, Kate took a deep breath and dialed her mother’s number. The phone rang twice before her mom picked it up. “Kate?” her mother’s voice was hesitant, almost apologetic. “Mom,” Kate began, her voice trembling. “I… I need to talk to you.” There was a pause, and then her mother said sof

Chapter 46The theater was alive with energy, the air thick with anticipation as the finalists took their places backstage. Kate stood in the wings, her heart pounding in her chest. The stage lights glowed brightly, casting long shadows across the polished floor. She could hear the murmurs of the audience, the rustle of programs, and the occasional burst of applause. This was it. The moment she had worked for, sacrificed for, and dreamed of. Her fingers trembled as she adjusted the straps of her costume, the delicate fabric shimmering under the dim backstage lights. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, and let the music of her routine play in her mind. This wasn’t just about winning anymore. This was about proving to herself that she could rise above the expectations, the pressure, and the noise. “You’ve got this,” a voice whispered beside her. Kate turned to see one of the stagehands, a young woman with a kind smile, giving her an encouraging nod. Kate nodded back, her

Seth had taken her to a quiet, upscale restaurant on the outskirts of the city. The ambiance was warm, the lighting dim but cozy, with a soft hum of classical music playing in the background. Their table was near a window, giving them a view of the city lights shimmering in the distance. Kate played with her napkin, trying to suppress the nervous energy bubbling inside her. Public dates weren’t their thing. At least, not until now. Seth, ever composed, reached for his glass of wine, taking a slow sip before meeting her gaze. “You’re quiet,” he noted. Kate glanced at him, picking at her food. “I was just wondering…” She hesitated before finally asking, “Why now? Why are we suddenly out in the open like this?” Seth leaned back in his chair, exhaling. “Because I don’t want to hide anymore.” Kate raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t mind hiding before.” “I did.” His voice was soft but firm. “I just didn’t realize how much until recently.” Kate set down her fork, tilting her head s
