Rosa’s POV

I stood frozen in the middle of the crowd, heart pounding as my eyes searched desperately for Evelyn. But she was gone.

One moment, she had been on that podium, spilling lies and owning the attention of the entire city, and now, she had vanished. And all that was left was a hungry crowd, reaching for us to answer their endless questions. Reporters were shouting questions and cameras flashed rudely, unaware of the state of helplessness that I was in.

Then a firm hand held mine.

I tried to snatch my hand away, thinking it was a stranger. But I felt the scent of his aftershave, and suddenly, I felt grounded.

But there was everything wrong about him holding me that way. “Alex,” I whispered, lips barely moving. “We’re in public.”

His grip tightened instead. “I’m not letting go,” he said in that tone that told me it was nonnegotiable.
