Pietra

I came home exhausted. The day had been especially rough at the diner, and to top it off, Isaque was even chattier than usual on the walk from school. I tried not to show my impatience. He was just excited. But my shoulders were stiff, my back ached as if I’d carried the world for hours, and a dull, throbbing headache warned me that if I didn’t rest soon, a full-blown migraine would be joining me for the evening.

As soon as I pushed open the kitchen door, I froze in the doorway, staring at the scene before me.

The table was buried under an avalanche of things. Fabric samples, decoration catalogs, scribbled lists, wedding invitation prototypes... all stacked in piles that seemed to multiply my exhaustion just by looking at them.

I let out a deep sigh. One of th

  • In the Name of Ambition   Reliving the Past

KimberlyIt was still early, but I had been awake for hours. My head felt heavy as if carrying the weight of a whole lifetime of unexplained things, and maybe that was exactly it. I sat on the balcony of Axel’s guest room, hugging my legs and staring into nothingness, trying to find some meaning in what the universe had done to my life… again. When I heard the sound of the door opening, I didn’t need to turn around. I knew it was Kathleen. She always had that quiet way of coming in, as if she knew I was overthinking everything. And she knew I didn’t want to talk, but I needed to. Kathleen came in holding a cup of tea. She knew I didn’t want to talk, but I needed to.

  • In the Name of Ambition   She’s Different…

AxelI must have walked ten kilometers around that living room. I was pacing in circles like a caged animal. The entire house felt too small to contain the storm growing inside me. My footsteps echoed in the silence, and even with clenched fists and tense muscles, I knew nothing I did would ease the weight in my chest. The clock on the wall ticked each second like torture. Fred had advised me to wait, to let Kim come home from work on her own. “She’s going to need space after what you’re about to tell her,” he’d said.

  • In the Name of Ambition   He’s Different…

KimberlyMonday morning came in cloudy, and oddly enough, it mirrored exactly how I felt inside. On the way to work, arms crossed and eyes lost outside the car window, I felt restless. Axel and I had woken up late after an intense weekend, and he had to rush off to deal with a club commitment. He said it was something important, related to the buzz around the European championship game from the day before. But that wasn’t what was bothering me. Since the night of the nightmare, something about Axel felt… different. Like a thought was eating away at him from the inside. He spoke to me, touched me, looked at me like I was everything he wanted—and yet, there was a shadow in his eyes. Subtle, but there. It was as if he were carrying a weight he didn’t want to share.

  • In the Name of Ambition   A Beautiful Proposal

AntonSunday dinner at the Baumann mansion had always been part of my life. But that night, everything felt different as I watched Pietra from across the table, her laughter blending with Anneliese’s as the two of them whispered secrets that even made Rebecca blush. It was hard to believe we were sitting there, in the very room where everything had fallen apart months ago. And yet, now, every glance, every touch between us felt like a new beginning."Anton, pass the wine to your grandmother," my grandfather’s deep voice pulled me from my reverie.I handed the bottle of Bordeaux to Berenice, who smiled at me with that gentle sweetness only she possessed. "Thank you, dear. It’s so nice to see everyone gathered like this." Her eyes misted slightly as they landed on Pietra. "And with such happy news..."Pietra lowered her gaze to her glass, but the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her. My hand found hers beneath the table, our fingers intertwining naturally."Axel sent a message today,

  • In the Name of Ambition   The Baumann Family Dinner

RebeccaI’d been avoiding Leonel Baumann since arriving at the estate. Some part of me wasn’t ready to face the family patriarch, not after everything that had happened between Aaron and me, not with the legends surrounding the formidable man making my pulse spike. But tonight, my usual excuse of needing rest wouldn’t work. Aaron had been insistent yet patient, coaxing me with that quiet determination of his until I agreed to join the family’s traditional Sunday dinner. As we descended the grand staircase, my fingers laced tightly with Aaron’s, even the warmth of his hand couldn’t calm my racing heart. With each step, my anxiety mounted like I was marching toward a battlefield where every glance, every word, would be scrutinized. At the final step, Aaron stopped abruptly, turning me to face him. His palms cradled my cheeks, his gaze intense."Your hands are freezing," he murmured, thumbs brushing my skin.I attempted a smile. "I’ll be fine. Promise."Aaron tilted his head, seeing stra
