Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
Early the next morning, I went to the nursing home to visit my mother, Dahlia Everson.

Yesterday, the doctors told me that she was out of danger, but her situation remained unpromising.

Her health was steadily deteriorating. She couldn't even remember me when her condition flared up, yet she could still remember Nina.

When she saw me, she noticed my swollen cheek and asked, "What happened to your face?"

I touched my face and forced a smile. "It's nothing, Mom. How are you feeling today?"

Mom looked slightly better than before.

She shook her head, then looked behind me.

I knew who she was waiting for.

"Nina's busy. She'll come by to see you when she has time," I told her.

Mom looked away and said quietly, "You always say that. She just doesn't want to see me, doesn't she?"

I opened my mouth, then lowered my head.

The thought of Nina taking on a lawsuit for an outsider while neglecting Mom made my heart ache sharply.

"How about you give her a call? I really want to see her, even if just once."

Mom's pleas weighed heavily on me.

Nina's parents had passed away when she was still very young.

Ever since she married me, Mom doted on Nina as if she were her biological daughter.

Knowing that Nina had a weak stomach and a poor appetite, Mom would wake up early to make a nourishing porridge for her every morning.

Even when Nina came home from work on rainy days, Mom would have drawn a hot bath for her in advance.

Mom had done these things for ten years, but Nina had never once thanked her for them.

Still, Mom understood Nina's personality, so she always advised me to be more tolerant of her.

Nina and I hadn't spoken a single word to each other since yesterday.

We'd both tacitly started giving each other the silent treatment.

However, faced with Mom's expectant gaze, I bit the bullet and called Nina.

When the call connected, all I could hear was background noise.

The call was then disconnected before I could speak.

When I next dialed her number, I was informed that her phone was switched off.

The light in Mom's eyes slowly dimmed.

She sighed and took a bracelet wrapped in red cloth out from under her pillow.

"I still have something I want to give her in person," she revealed.

I recognized that bracelet—it was one of the possessions she'd inherited from her family.

She'd always wanted to give it to Nina, but she'd never had the chance.

Mom forced a smile, patted my hand, and said, "Please help me give it to her next time."

My nose started to sting, and I almost started crying.

Just as I was about to reply, a nurse walked in and announced, "May Ms. Everson's family members please leave for now? It's time for her injections."

I stood up and glanced back at Mom, who waved at me.

After I left, I was still feeling quite down and could only distract myself by immersing myself in housework as soon as I got home.

While cleaning Nina's study, I noticed that her drawer was filled to the brim with cards.

My mind instantly went blank.

Nina would ask me to buy breakfast from Will's shop every day.

I knew that every bag of takeout I bought would come with a card, but I never questioned it because I thought that was normal practice there.

I reached out to take a few of the cards.

After flipping them open and reading the contents, I felt my blood run cold.

"Good morning."

"Make sure to eat your meals."

"I miss you every day."

Hundreds of such cards were piled up before my eyes, causing that last mental straw in my head to snap instantly.

It was only by holding onto the edge of the table that I stopped myself from collapsing on the spot.

I'd thought myself mentally prepared, but when I saw the cards, I still found the situation rather absurd.

Before I could even catch my breath, the caregiver from the nursing home, Martha Wattson, called me.

She wailed in a terror-filled voice, "Mr. Sheppard! Your mother! She committed suicide!"

Ian's POVThree months passed before I saw Nina again. She was still the same as before."Ian, let's not get divorced. There's genuinely nothing between me and Will. Come home with me, and let's live happily ever after together. You know me—I've always been apathetic, but I don't mean to be," she said slowly and clearly. She was acting the same way as when I'd begged her for a divorce years ago.I thought I would soften and forgive her, but after she was done speaking, I found that I was completely unmoved.I said, "Nina, you were the one who caused Mom's death. Someone sent her a photo of you and Will in bed together. It was Will who sent it, wasn't it? I wondered why Mom wanted to meet you so badly at the time."Seemingly because she noticed my distant gaze, Nina became a little panicked."I-I didn't know about that. Ian, can't you give me a chance? We've been married for ten years. Would you really divorce me just like that?" she asked. It was the first time in our ten year

Just as Nina was feeling restless and upset, she received a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced themselves as Ian's divorce lawyer, Edward Howe, and wanted to meet her to discuss the divorce. She refused at first, but because she wanted to meet Ian, she eventually agreed to the meeting. They made an appointment to meet next Wednesday.During the week leading up to the meeting, news regarding Nina physically assaulting Will's wife surfaced online. As a result, many netizens began to distance themselves from her."It turns out she's a divorce lawyer. If I weren't in the know, I would've assumed she was the man's legal wife catching a mistress red-handed.""Divorce lawyers not only help you with your divorce but with catching mistresses too!"Some netizens even uncovered the relationship between Nina and Will. They claimed that the two of them were close and might even have been in a relationship, but others quickly pointed out that both had families of their own.

"Will, we're just friends, so please don't say such misleading things. I never planned on divorcing Ian either—never did and never will," said Nina. Will's smile froze on his face, and his eyes widened. He asked, "Why? You were the one who told me that you didn't like him. Didn't you once consider divorcing him too? You're a divorce lawyer, so you're capable of securing the biggest advantage for yourself. Or is it because you've never really seen me as…"Nina had no idea what to say in the face of Will's puzzlement. She was certainly drawn to Will, but she'd never once thought of actually having anything more than friendship with him. She'd been married to Ian for ten years and had long grown used to his presence in her life.Back when she considered divorcing him, it had simply been because they'd been in the middle of a disagreement and not because she genuinely wanted a divorce. Moreover, throughout their ten years of marriage, she'd brought up divorce many times only for Ian

Third-Person POVAfter Nina finished handling Will's divorce petition, it finally occurred to her that she seemed to have forgotten something. When she turned on her phone and saw the reminder pop up on screen, her expression turned sour.It was Saturday, and she'd made plans to meet Ian for lunch two days ago, but it was already this late. She hadn't shown up, and Ian hadn't called her either. Her temples throbbed, and she felt a vague sense of heaviness inside. She scrolled through her contact list and hovered a finger over Ian's number. She called him multiple times, but none of them connected. She massaged her temples with slight irritation. She'd noticed that Ian had been acting strangely for the past few days, and he'd even brought up divorce not too long ago.She wondered if it was because she'd been too distant with him recently, so when Ian asked to meet on Saturday, she'd readily agreed. However, she'd forgotten that it was also the day of Will's divorce hearing.

Due to insufficient evidence, Will couldn't appeal or take further legal action, so the matter eventually came to nothing. For several consecutive days, I refused to initiate any conversation with Nina.On the contrary, her attitude toward me softened considerably.Every morning, I would wake up to see that she'd prepared breakfast for me.She'd also organize my clothes neatly despite never bothering with any housework. In the past, I would have felt moved, thinking that she'd had a change of heart. But now, her actions felt driven by a guilty conscience.Seeing as I remained in low spirits, Nina assumed that I was still grieving over Mom's death. She offered, "After Will's case is settled, let's take a trip to Fernlann or Gelland. Gelland has beautiful auroras. Haven't you always wanted to go there?"I didn't react very joyfully to her suggestion. In truth, I didn't believe her words at all.I asked instead, "Are you free this Saturday? By the time I rushed over to the nursing home, the police had already cordoned the building off.Mom had jumped from the eighth floor. She'd clearly been fine in the morning, but she committed suicide as soon as I left.Martha said she'd left behind a suicide note, on which only a few words were written."I'm tired. I can't take this awful illness anymore."I didn't know how I managed to pick up Mom's death certificate or get her cremated. It wasn't until Nina returned home that night that I slowly regained my senses. She was carrying a few containers of homestyle cooking, and she spoke in a much softer tone than a few days ago."You like the food this restaurant serves, so I brought some back for you—"Her words abruptly stuck in her throat. The living room was a mess, covered mostly in empty beer bottles. She frowned and asked, "Have you been drinking? Didn't you kick the habit ages ago?"She set the takeout on the table with furrowed brows, then continued, "Even if you'r
