Chapter 1

Author: Nora Blythe
My wife, Nina Jeanes, was taken to the police station for assaulting another person.

I trailed behind the police car in my own car.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the sight of the restaurant owner, Will Looke, tenderly wiping the blood from Nina's temple for her.

"Does it hurt? I already told you I was fine," he said.

I stood in the doorway and watched them for a long time.

I knew Will. He was a young and clean-cut man who ran a breakfast place just downstairs from where Nina and I lived.

Nina really liked getting breakfast from his shop and would ask me to buy her some every day.

Hence, I gradually got to know Will as well.

When a policeman walked out, he had a report in his hand.

He looked between Will and me with a strange look in his eyes.

"Which of you is her family member?" he asked.

It was when the words left his mouth that Nina finally noticed me standing to one side.

She immediately looked away and swiftly put some distance between Will and herself.

If not for the policeman's words, she might not have noticed me at all.

After ten years of marriage, I was used to always being at the bottom of her priority list.

After posting her bail, I said calmly, "Let's go home first."

Will, who was standing next to Nina, looked like he was about to say something. However, he sulkily kept his silence upon seeing the look in my eyes.

I drove while Nina sat in the front passenger seat.

On the way home, neither of us said a single word.

It wasn't until we'd arrived and closed the door behind us that she finally spoke up.

"It's not what you think. Will's wife cheated on him, so I was trying to help him…"

For Will's sake, she was going so far as to offer something she'd always considered beneath herself—an explanation.

My chest felt uncomfortably tight.

Nina was cold and aloof.

In the public's eye, she was a rational, elite lawyer.

At home, she sometimes said no more than ten sentences to me in one day.

I'd always assumed that she treated everyone the same way, so I asked nothing else of her and simply hoped that we continued to live peaceful lives.

Yet, she was now sticking up for a stranger in public and had even been arrested for his sake.

I sighed deeply and said, "Nina, I've been married to you for ten years, so I know you best. You've handled countless court cases involving infidelity. Why did you choose to stick up for him in particular?"

Nina was clearly stunned for a second, looking like she hadn't expected my question, but she quickly started frowning.

"I'm a lawyer, and he's just a client who needs help. Isn't it perfectly normal for me to help him?" she asked.

Her self-righteous demeanor brought me close to laughter.

A few years ago, my father passed away in an accident.

The drunk driver had pulled a hit-and-run, so I pleaded for Nina to step in.

She'd replied, "Pay my legal fees first. Procedure must be observed."

Why hadn't I noticed that she was so righteous and benevolent back then?

Just as I was about to speak again, someone knocked on the door.

Nina opened the door to reveal Will standing outside.

Her tightly furrowed brows instantly relaxed a little.

Will stood awkwardly in the doorway and glanced cautiously at me.

"Did I come at a bad time?" he asked.

Nina pursed her lips and said nothing.

Will strode forward and knelt before us immediately afterward.

Nina turned pale with shock and shouted, "What are you doing?"

Will presented the documents he'd been carrying and said in a choked voice, "Nina, please help me. I'll pay your fees. I'm already prepared to sell the breakfast shop."

Nina forcefully helped him to his feet before replying firmly, "I won't ask—"

"I'll give you the bank account details, so please transfer the sum within three days," I cut in, gazing quietly at the two of them.

Nina whipped around to look at me, her eyes wide.

I smiled wryly. "Weren't you the one who said that procedure must be observed and to pay the fee first—"

Before I even finished speaking, Nina slapped me hard.

My cheek burned with pain.

"Ian Sheppard! You're clearly aware that Will has no money, yet you're being so petty! Is money all you care about?" Nina snapped, her chest heaving violently.

She promptly turned to leave, tugging Will along with her.

"Let's go! I'll handle your divorce case for free!" she told him.

Ian's POVThree months passed before I saw Nina again. She was still the same as before."Ian, let's not get divorced. There's genuinely nothing between me and Will. Come home with me, and let's live happily ever after together. You know me—I've always been apathetic, but I don't mean to be," she said slowly and clearly. She was acting the same way as when I'd begged her for a divorce years ago.I thought I would soften and forgive her, but after she was done speaking, I found that I was completely unmoved.I said, "Nina, you were the one who caused Mom's death. Someone sent her a photo of you and Will in bed together. It was Will who sent it, wasn't it? I wondered why Mom wanted to meet you so badly at the time."Seemingly because she noticed my distant gaze, Nina became a little panicked."I-I didn't know about that. Ian, can't you give me a chance? We've been married for ten years. Would you really divorce me just like that?" she asked. It was the first time in our ten year

As a result, many netizens began to distance themselves from her."It turns out she's a divorce lawyer. If I weren't in the know, I would've assumed she was the man's legal wife catching a mistress red-handed.""Divorce lawyers not only help you with your divorce but with catching mistresses too!"Some netizens even uncovered the relationship between Nina and Will. They claimed that the two of them were close and might even have been in a relationship, but others quickly pointed out that both had families of their own.

"Will, we're just friends, so please don't say such misleading things. I never planned on divorcing Ian either—never did and never will," said Nina. Will's smile froze on his face, and his eyes widened. He asked, "Why? You were the one who told me that you didn't like him. Didn't you once consider divorcing him too? You're a divorce lawyer, so you're capable of securing the biggest advantage for yourself. Or is it because you've never really seen me as…"Nina had no idea what to say in the face of Will's puzzlement. She was certainly drawn to Will, but she'd never once thought of actually having anything more than friendship with him. She'd been married to Ian for ten years and had long grown used to his presence in her life.Back when she considered divorcing him, it had simply been because they'd been in the middle of a disagreement and not because she genuinely wanted a divorce. Moreover, throughout their ten years of marriage, she'd brought up divorce many times only for Ian

Due to insufficient evidence, Will couldn't appeal or take further legal action, so the matter eventually came to nothing. For several consecutive days, I refused to initiate any conversation with Nina.On the contrary, her attitude toward me softened considerably.Every morning, I would wake up to see that she'd prepared breakfast for me.She'd also organize my clothes neatly despite never bothering with any housework. In the past, I would have felt moved, thinking that she'd had a change of heart. But now, her actions felt driven by a guilty conscience.Seeing as I remained in low spirits, Nina assumed that I was still grieving over Mom's death. She offered, "After Will's case is settled, let's take a trip to Fernlann or Gelland. Gelland has beautiful auroras. Haven't you always wanted to go there?"I didn't react very joyfully to her suggestion. In truth, I didn't believe her words at all.I asked instead, "Are you free this Saturday? By the time I rushed over to the nursing home, the police had already cordoned the building off.Mom had jumped from the eighth floor. She'd clearly been fine in the morning, but she committed suicide as soon as I left.Martha said she'd left behind a suicide note, on which only a few words were written."I'm tired. I can't take this awful illness anymore."I didn't know how I managed to pick up Mom's death certificate or get her cremated. It wasn't until Nina returned home that night that I slowly regained my senses. She was carrying a few containers of homestyle cooking, and she spoke in a much softer tone than a few days ago."You like the food this restaurant serves, so I brought some back for you—"Her words abruptly stuck in her throat. The living room was a mess, covered mostly in empty beer bottles. She frowned and asked, "Have you been drinking? Didn't you kick the habit ages ago?"She set the takeout on the table with furrowed brows, then continued, "Even if you'r
