Chapter 4

Author: Little Shadow
When I woke up, it was already morning.

Samuel's personal assistant, Scott, stood by my hospital bed with a bag of supplements. He wore a polite smile on his face. "Mr. Moore asked me to buy these for you, Ma'am. You need to build your strength back up."

He set everything on the bedside table. "He... he still cares about you."

However, just then, two nurses who were doing their rounds passed the doorway, speaking in low voices.

"Rachel next door is so lucky. Her husband stayed up all night to take care of her and did everything himself."

"I know. He's handsome, rich, and devoted. I'm so envious!"

Scott stiffened, and he instantly did not know where to look.

My lips curled into a slightly mocking smirk, but my chest hurt from it.

To break the silence, Scott pulled out a drawing from his briefcase. "Ma'am, I went to your house this morning to pick up some documents, and I saw this on the couch. I believe Morgan had drawn this, and I thought it would make you happy just seeing it."

He handed the drawing to me with three little stick figures holding hands in crayons with smiles on their faces.

Scott thought it was the three of us.

I thought so too… Until I saw the date in the lower right corner.

That date was the day my parents had died in that car crash.

My voice shook. "How did you get this drawing?"

Scott looked confused and answered honestly. "It was on the living room couch. I picked it up without thinking..."

I burst out laughing, my laughter sounding like it was laced with despair as my tears rolled out.

Oh, I was the dumbest fool in the world!

On the worst day of my life, my husband and my son had been with another woman!

I cried until my chest felt torn open, and Scott got scared and left.

I did not know how much time had passed before the door opened.

Samuel walked in.

When he saw me, he stopped.

My face was pale, my eyes were swollen red, and tears were still welling in my eyes.

He wanted to speak, and he gulped a few times. In the end, he said it in a low voice. "Rachel's out of danger."

I said nothing as I stared at the gray sky beyond the window.

After a long time, I finally found my voice again as I said dryly, "Samuel. Let's get a divorce."

It was the third time I had said it.

His patience finally snapped. "How long are you going to keep this up?!"

I turned my head slowly and met his furious eyes. "Shouldn't you be happy that I want a divorce? You have liked Rachel for years, so now, you can finally be with her openly."

Samuel's eyes narrowed. He did not expect me to figure it out. Then, he smiled coldly. "Fine, a divorce it is! Don't regret this, Cindy!"

My heart went numb.

Regret?

My only regret was loving him in the past.

On the day I was discharged, Brenda came and picked me up.

She teared up when she saw how weak I was as she held me and cursed Samuel and Rachel under her breath.

I leaned against her shoulder in silence and let her rage burn itself out. Then, I boarded the flight to Floraland.

When the plane lifted off, I watched the city shrink beneath me.

I felt nothing.

-

Soon, it was Morgan's eighth birthday.

His birthday party was held at the Moore family estate, and it was packed with guests. Rachel held Samuel's arm as though she belonged there, and Morgan was grinning from ear to ear.

"Mr. Moore, why is your wife not here today?" A familiar guest asked.

Samuel's smile thinned as his tone turned sharp. "She had something to do. If she comes, she comes."

Morgan pouted. "It's fine if she's not here. Having Rachel with me is enough!"

Rachel stroked his hair gently. "Don't say that, Morgan. Your mom must be busy. She wouldn't miss a day like this."

Before Morgan could answer, a server rolled in a huge present box. "Excuse me, Mr. Morgan. This is a birthday gift from Ms. Cindy Wright."

That caught everyone's attention.

Morgan copied the grown-ups and said with sarcasm, "She's finally figured it out and knows to buy what I like. It must be the limited-edition race car model I have wanted forever!"

He ran and tore the present's wrappings open.

However, there was no race car model.

Instead, there was a massive photograph inside.

It was the photo of Samuel, Rachel, and Morgan under the snowy peaks of Wintercrown, with a card sitting beside it with one line. "Congratulations on getting a new mom, Morgan."

My words were a sharp blade as they stripped away his last pretense and all his excuses. Samuel's face went pale. He wanted to argue with me, but nothing came out. He thought that once Rachel was gone, we could go back to the way things were. He did not understand that once something was broken, it stayed broken."Mom..." Morgan approached me, crying as he reached for my hand. "I really know what I did was wrong now... I don't want Rachel anymore… I only want you..."I stepped back and avoided his touch."Morgan, you have to remember this, too." I looked at him and spoke softly. "Our blood ties do not give you the right to hurt me. I already gave you a lot of chances. Now, it's too late."Samuel tried to come closer, but one cold look from me stopped him. "Keep harassing me, and I'll call the police."I slammed the door shut behind me, cutting their crying and pleading off completely. However, they refused to leave as they waited outside my workshop. One day.Two days.Three

Time moved fast, and before I knew it, I had already stayed in Floraland for half a year. The perfume brand Brenda and I built together became extremely popular in just six months. Its signature blend carried a foreign mystery, allowing it to break through in the international market and win multiple awards.I wore a simple white dress as I stood at the perfumer's organ, fully focused. Gentle sunlight streamed through the tall windows, creating a soft glow around me.For these past six months, I had poured everything into my work.I found my old passion and dreams again. I found that confident, independent version of myself once more. That night, I had a dream I had not seen in a long time.In that dream, I was back in my early twenties. I was bright and fearless. Back then, there was hope in my eyes and a future in my heart. Then, I met Samuel.I gave up the chance to study in Luminaire for him. I walked into marriage on the promise of "I'll take care of you".After we marri

Seeing how her pretense was useless now, Rachel dropped the act and stopped crying. Her face twisted with hatred as she got up slowly from the floor and wiped her tears away, her eyes turning cold. She walked straight toward Samuel, her voice becoming wild. "That's right! I cheated! So what?!"Rachel laughed with madness in her voice, ringing through the empty ward. "You think your brother was some great man? He was stiff and boring. He knew nothing but work! Being with him felt like living as a widow! Why couldn't I find a man who gives me excitement and happiness?"She pointed at Samuel's chest, her eyes full of contempt. "And you, Samuel. Don't act so noble. You said you've loved me for more than a decade, but what did you do? You still married Cindy."Do you deny ever sleeping with her in those ten years? Do you deny ever enjoying everything she gave you? All of you Moores are the same! Selfish! Hypocrites!"You think I don't know why you married her? It's because her father c

By the time Olaf was done speaking, everything Samuel had believed for more than a decade was shattered. He left the office in a daze, unable to accept what he had just heard. He wanted to confront Rachel and ask if it was true. But when he reached the doorway, he heard Rachel's voice coming from inside. She was on the phone with a friend. "Don't worry. Samuel's a complete fool, and he's very easy to handle. He has liked me for more than a decade, and all I need to do is say a few sweet words to him, and he'd believe it all. His son is just as stupid. Just a little bit of gentleness, and he treats me like his real mom."His wife is gone now, too, just in time to make way for me. Samuel is young and rich, much better than those sleazy older geezers overseas. Once I lock down my place as Samuel's wife, you'll be able to enjoy a good life along with me!"Samuel felt a chill down his spine as he listened from the doorway. So, it had all been a show. Her frailty… Her affection… Her gr

The whole Moore estate was in an uproar.Guests whispered to each other as their eyes kept drifting between Samuel and Rachel.Samuel's face instantly became dark as anger surged. He assumed I was the one making trouble again.Morgan was shocked at first, but then he got excited and cheered. "That's great! I've wanted Rachel to be my mom for a long time!"Rachel looked pleased as she basked in the joy. She failed to notice the strange looks around her at all.Samuel suddenly felt extremely uneasy for no apparent cause, and he pulled out his phone to call me, but my phone was already powered off.Rachel seized the moment when she saw that and said, "Samuel, Cindy has really gone too far! She humiliated you in public… Doesn't she realize this isn't the place and time for this?"Samuel's unease turned into anger. He decided to leave me hanging for a bit because of how far I had gone this time. He wanted to wait for me to come back and admit that what I had done was wrong. He force
