Chapter 2

Foxy Piglet
The more Chris tried to say no, the more eager Mary was—she even shoved me and said, "Just say you don't mind, old-timer."

I scowled as I growled the words, "I do mind."

Mary's face darkened right then. "Chris is my best friend! You're getting jealous over that?! I told you not to come, but you insisted—and now you're being a buzzkill! Just look, you're souring everyone's companionship! Everyone's so uncomfortable!"

Companionship? They called this companionship?!

"It's not happening as long as I'm around," I retorted, my face just as dark.

She sprang to her feet right then, snapping, "Get out!"

I'd really spoiled her rotten, leading to that terrible temper.

That was when I heard Chris' thoughts again: 'Woah. A husband living off his wife's wealth, and he still has the audacity to throw a fit? Guess he won't be around soon!'

Chuckling, I picked up my glass from the table.

"You'd better not regret this later, pal," I told Chris and chugged my drink.

Chris picked up his glass too, his expression gleeful. "Drive safe. Don't trip over yourself."

As soon as I left the room, I could hear the crowd cheering again, egging on Mary and Chris.

I shook my head—Chris really had no idea that Mary's family had gone bankrupt, and I was the only person making a living for them.

Soon after I left the party, I received a photo of Mary kissing Chris, their lips virtually glued together.

It was not until midnight that she came home, clearly drunk.

Seeing me sitting on the couch, she wobbled over, putting her feet over my lap so that I took off her socks.

I had been worried that her family's bankruptcy stressed her out and when she was pregnant on top of that.

That was why I had been doing everything she said, only for this crap to happen.

"You and your friend really know how to have a good time."

I held up my phone at her, showing her the photo of her kissing Chris.

She barely had a look and nonchalantly smacked my hand aside. "Are you jealous? It's just Truth or Dare. Or you'd rather have them call me a loser?"

I raised a brow—that was a good enough reason for her to cheat?

"Do you still consider me your husband?" I asked her.

She didn't answer and pretended to fall asleep.

I didn't expose her and let it slide for the sake of our child.

-

We gave each other the silent treatment since that reunion party, but I tried to extend an olive branch out of concern for her pregnancy.

Taking a day off on Valentine's Day, I cooked up a storm to break the ice.

However, Mary left first thing in the morning to visit a friend and never came home.

The food on the table that was steaming hot cooled before long, even becoming hard.

I kept staring at the clock on the wall, telling myself that I must stay calm for the sake of our child.

As the clock hands ticked, my phone suddenly rang.

"Dr. Jordan? We just got a patient who fell down a hill."

"Yeah, I'll be right there."

Staring at the food on the table, I wrote a note and left.

When it came to saving lives, every minute counted.

Once I arrived, the nurse quickly briefed me on the patient's condition.

It was a pregnant woman who went hiking early in the morning and continued for the whole day.

I shook my head—the young 'uns were really getting crazier these days.

Strenuous exercises were a no-no for pregnant women, and forget falling down a slope!

As I put on my gloves, I asked, "Have the patient's family been informed?"

The nurse shook her head. "She was brought in by a man… a friend."

"Well, we can't wait," I said, determined. "Find and contact her family, and in the meantime, I'll operate on the patient."

If the patient's family wasn't informed, the hospital would be held responsible for anything that goes bad.

Moreover, it was a guy friend who brought her here and not her husband? The messy relationship there was definitely going to cause a fight in the hostile.

However, as I went to the surgical table and routinely examined the patient, I froze.

The patient was my own wife, Mary.

With Chris interrupting my proposal, Yvie and I simply changed plans and prepared for our engagement party, inviting only colleagues but neither of our parents. And in the days leading to the party, we were inseparable.Smiling smugly as she fed me fries, Yvie asked, "You used to be so reluctant, but now you can't be away from me a single moment."I smiled but didn't answer, as I could hear Chris' thoughts in my head.'Oh, what a beautiful smile… She'd definitely be better leverage than Mary. It's obvious George cares so much about her.'"Come on, let's get you home," I told Yvie.Yvie pouted at me. "Go home? The engagement party is in the afternoon, silly. I gotta prepare with my girls."Chris' thoughts only became clearer. 'Engagement party? Perfect…' I squeezed Yvie's hand, regretting my plan at that instant."Come on, Yvie," I whispered as I took her in my arms.Chris' thoughts were virtually bellowing this time. While it was usually Yvie's cooking that quietly awaited me every day, I'd surprise her with my cooking on occasion when I had the time.As time passed, I thought life was good, and I didn't want to disappoint her.Hence, I prepared to propose on her birthday, buying her favorite cake and a set of jewelry. The candlelights were glowing when I turned off the lights, and Yvie's eyes sparkled beautifully, making her look like a luminous angel against the darkness. She seemed to know what I was going to do anyway, and her eyes were glowing with anticipation. Before I could say a word, however, my phone rang."You have to take it," Yvie spoke before I could, as she knew that night calls were always emergencies, and nothing mattered more than saving lives.Always grateful for her understanding, I answered, but I was scowling when I hung up. "Alright, I got it.""What?" Yvie asked in concern, seeing the look on my face.Putting my phone on the table, I sighed. "Do you remember Mary?

Yvie came over and hugged my arm, and she had a diamond ring on her ring finger while sliding the other on my finger."Congratulations, Dr. Jonas!" Everyone cheered once they recovered from the marvel of Yvie's beauty.Mary couldn't look more mundane compared to her, and with Yvie around, no one was dumb enough to believe that I was that blind to choose Mary.Yvie smiled as she happily nodded at everyone congratulating her, adding, "Everyone is young and reckless sometimes. That's the case for my dear George, falling for a rotten apple like that."With that, the unpleasantness with Mary was quickly resolved, and everyone was suddenly envious of me.On the other hand, Mary was nowhere to be seen, shoved away to who-knows-where.-With the party over, Yvie was quite drunk, but she also helped secure plenty of connections for me.As I fed her honey to ease her hangover, I smiled wryly as I watched her cheeks flush adorably."Don't drink too much—even if it's for me," I told her s

Mary wobbled to her feet, picking up the jug and chugging it, while her tears poured. "George… I'm so sorry. Please don't stoop to my level, okay?"The greasy geezer dragged her along to other clients, however, snorting, "Women never know their place until they get a beating. Sorry, doc."I disapprove of violence, but I wasn't obligated to defend Mary either. However, while I thought it was just a momentary distraction, Mary seized the right moment to intercept me at the dinner."Please. I regret everything," she sobbed, tearing up once more.Beneath the thick makeup, her skin complexion was rough, and she definitely didn't look like she used to lead a pampered life.As I distanced myself, I asked, "Do you have any business with me, Ms. Langley?"Mary's face was stiff with regret."Do we have to be strangers like this? I know I made a mistake, but I'll change, okay? Let's remarry! Chris was a liar. He forced me to get our jewelry, and I didn't want things to get so bad between

Some time later, I had just completed a surgery when I called her name and was going to brief her on the patient's condition, when everyone around me burst out laughing. "Your intern bailed on you, doc. I'm sure they're still working upstairs, so should we get a number for being lovesick?"Upstairs? That was the psych ward!Rolling my eyes, I left the operating room and was checking my phone before I knew it.I was swiping through my phone aimlessly, but instead of finding anything on Yvie, I saw Mary instead.Since our divorce, she and Chris had been traveling everywhere and indulging themselves, while making sure to tag me on their brag posts. However, I'd just ignored it and stayed away from social media, though I did remember that they were already budgeting on their last trip. Now, I found Mary's message in my inbox, asking me for a loan and sending me photos of herself. After their money dried up, Chris changed drastically and started physically abusing her every day.I n

Chris knew that they didn't have the moral high ground and promptly took Mary's hand to comfort her. "Oh, Mary—I feel you. How did you survive living with such a petty man all those years?"If anything, I was worried Mary would renege and promptly gave them a push. "That's right. You should divorce me right away, Mary, and be with your one true love who's always so understanding."Just the thought of true love sent Mary thrilled, and she gritted her teeth as she snarled, "You want an uncontested divorce? So be it! Chris will spoil me rotten!"I eyed Chris—him? Really?"Yes! That's right! Divorce him already, Mary!" Chris was too excited and too busy goading Mary to notice. With that, our divorce proceeded smoothly, after which Mary and Chris quickly registered their marriage at the floor below. As we left the building together, I wished them all the best, and to stay stuck together, come what may.Still, Mary was smiling blissfully, hugging Chris' arm as she gloated, "I'm no lon
