It's What You Wished For

The more Chris tried to say no, the more eager Mary was—she even shoved me and said, "Just say you don't mind, old-timer."I scowled as I growled the words, "I do mind."Mary's face darkened right then. "Chris is my best friend! You're getting jealous over that?! I told you not to come, but you insisted—and now you're being a buzzkill! Just look, you're souring everyone's companionship! Everyone's so uncomfortable!"Companionship? They called this companionship?!"It's not happening as long as I'm around," I retorted, my face just as dark. She sprang to her feet right then, snapping, "Get out!"I'd really spoiled her rotten, leading to that terrible temper. That was when I heard Chris' thoughts again: 'Woah. A husband living off his wife's wealth, and he still has the audacity to throw a fit? Guess he won't be around soon!'Chuckling, I picked up my glass from the table. "You'd better not regret this later, pal," I told Chris and chugged my drink.Chris picked up his glass

Chris knew that they didn't have the moral high ground and promptly took Mary's hand to comfort her. "Oh, Mary—I feel you. How did you survive living with such a petty man all those years?"If anything, I was worried Mary would renege and promptly gave them a push. "That's right. You should divorce me right away, Mary, and be with your one true love who's always so understanding."Just the thought of true love sent Mary thrilled, and she gritted her teeth as she snarled, "You want an uncontested divorce? So be it! Chris will spoil me rotten!"I eyed Chris—him? Really?"Yes! That's right! Divorce him already, Mary!" Chris was too excited and too busy goading Mary to notice. With that, our divorce proceeded smoothly, after which Mary and Chris quickly registered their marriage at the floor below. As we left the building together, I wished them all the best, and to stay stuck together, come what may.Still, Mary was smiling blissfully, hugging Chris' arm as she gloated, "I'm no lon

Mary wobbled to her feet, picking up the jug and chugging it, while her tears poured. "George… I'm so sorry. Please don't stoop to my level, okay?"The greasy geezer dragged her along to other clients, however, snorting, "Women never know their place until they get a beating. Sorry, doc."I disapprove of violence, but I wasn't obligated to defend Mary either. However, while I thought it was just a momentary distraction, Mary seized the right moment to intercept me at the dinner."Please. I regret everything," she sobbed, tearing up once more.Beneath the thick makeup, her skin complexion was rough, and she definitely didn't look like she used to lead a pampered life.As I distanced myself, I asked, "Do you have any business with me, Ms. Langley?"Mary's face was stiff with regret."Do we have to be strangers like this? I know I made a mistake, but I'll change, okay? Let's remarry! Chris was a liar. He forced me to get our jewelry, and I didn't want things to get so bad between

While it was usually Yvie's cooking that quietly awaited me every day, I'd surprise her with my cooking on occasion when I had the time.As time passed, I thought life was good, and I didn't want to disappoint her.Hence, I prepared to propose on her birthday, buying her favorite cake and a set of jewelry. The candlelights were glowing when I turned off the lights, and Yvie's eyes sparkled beautifully, making her look like a luminous angel against the darkness. She seemed to know what I was going to do anyway, and her eyes were glowing with anticipation. Before I could say a word, however, my phone rang."You have to take it," Yvie spoke before I could, as she knew that night calls were always emergencies, and nothing mattered more than saving lives.Always grateful for her understanding, I answered, but I was scowling when I hung up. "Alright, I got it.""What?" Yvie asked in concern, seeing the look on my face.Putting my phone on the table, I sighed. "Do you remember Mary?
