Chapter 2

Author: coco
"No need," I said bluntly.

Leon and Lucas frowned at the same time.

"Amelia, the Shadow Wastelands are harsh. There's sulfur and magma everywhere, and yet you still want to stay here?

"We're mates. If you just back down, I'll mark you again," Leon said.

I couldn't help but scoff at his ridiculous words.

So, he did know how harsh the wastelands were?

When we first arrived six years ago, the climate was harsh, and the guards were strict. After finishing the grueling labor, I couldn't even get a sip of hot soup. With my delicate constitution, I quickly fell ill.

A few Rogues wandering the wasteland snuck into my stone hut that night. They laughed nastily, threw off my blanket, and tore my clothes.

"Of all the she-wolves sent here, you're the prettiest. Be good and let us have some fun..."

In that moment of hopeless despair, I suddenly thought of Leon and Lucas. They were probably with Mila, gathered around a fire, enjoying fresh prey and each other's company.

I closed my eyes, unwilling to watch. That was when a blood-curdling scream sounded.

The weight on me suddenly lifted, and a strikingly heroic person appeared before me, radiating a powerful Alpha presence.

"Get lost! Who gave you permission to do this in my territory?" he growled to the Rogues.

He then touched my forehead and said, "You have a fever. I'll find a healer to get you some medicine."

I gripped his leaving hand tightly, as though I were a drowning wolf clutching a piece of driftwood. With a hoarse voice, I pleaded, "Please… Mark me."

I refused to be bullied forever. I had to rise up and clear my family's name.

The person I grabbed was the lord of the Shadow Wastelands—the Alpha, Kane Frost.

He was the most powerful ruler of the wasteland. He had no mate or pups, spending his days eating and living alongside his warriors in the territory.

I never thought he would actually accept an exiled she-wolf like me.

The conditions in the wastelands were harsh, so there was no grand ceremony—just a rough piece of animal hide, a few plates of coarse dried meat, and a simple mark. Just like that, Kane and I became mates. The occasion was nothing compared to when I married into the Black family.

Kane was a rugged warrior, and he lacked Leon's refined elegance. Still, he not only took me out of the wasteland, but he also settled my frail parents and family in the valley of his territory.

He believed my father was innocent and promised he'd find a way to clear our name.

From then on, I focused entirely on Kane. I never thought about Leon or Lucas ever again. Then, a year later, I gave birth to my and Kane's son—Sean Frost.

Six months ago, Kane said he'd gathered evidence of Mila framing loyal pack members and even secretly conspiring with vampires. He decided to go to the pack himself and report her to the Elder Council.

Sean had never been to the pack where I grew up, so he pestered his dad until he got to go along.

A few days ago, Kane sent word saying that things were looking good. He told me to follow the convoy he'd arranged and come back to the pack so we could reunite as a family.

With Kane and Sean on my mind, I had no patience left to waste words on the people before me.

"Yes, there's no need. I've had nothing to do with you for a long time. You should leave now," I said flatly.

Unable to contain himself, Lucas cried out with tears in his eyes, "Mother, why can't you see how hard Father and I have tried?"

Leon, having grown more composed, paused in thought before saying, "Amelia, I know you're just angry right now. Lucas and I will wait for you.

"If you change your mind, just come to the second SUV at the town entrance."

I ignored him, then turned around and went home to pack.

The next morning, I carried my bag to the convoy. When Leon and Lucas saw me coming, they both smiled with relief.

Lucas sneered. "Looks like even after six years, Mother still hasn't outgrown her habit of saying one thing and meaning another!"

Leon smiled and reached for me. "I'm glad you came to your senses. Let's go home."

In the past, when we traveled, he always took my hand to help me into the car.

Right in front of them, I walked straight to the vehicle a short distance away, one marked with the crest of the Shadow Wastelands.

Leon's and Lucas' faces fell at the same time.

After it was over, the Alpha King learned of my brave actions. However, I used my honor to plead on their behalf with the Alpha King.Considering that the two of them had wised up in the end, they were stripped of their status and made commoners. Leon and Lucas were exiled to work in the mines of the Shadow Wastelands. From that day on, the Black family ceased to exist within the pack. While Kane and I escorted the prisoners to the wasteland, Leon and Lucas frequently trailed on foot behind our vehicles.Once, they had been at the top of the pack hierarchy. Now, they were just Rogues. They always stared blankly at Kane and me whenever we were affectionate, and the gentle motherly love I shared with Sean.…Five years later, the new Alpha of the pack decided to pardon some of the old prisoners, allowing them

Just as Mila's claws were about to reach me, Leon stepped in front of me.A maid rushed in, reporting that vampires were already fighting Kane at the city gates. They needed people to open the gate from the inside.Mila glared at Leon, then laughed. "Hah! You're not worth the years of my youth I wasted on you. Since you still want to protect her, I'll grant your wish. You can all die together!"Mila tied the three of us together, then she set fire to the residence and left.Leon smiled in resignation. "This is good. At least our family can die together."I rolled my eyes. Who wanted to die with these two? I still had my mate and son to think about!I pulled out the knife I'd hidden and cut the ropes binding us.After being stuck alone and helpless in the wasteland six years ago, I vowed never to leave my fate in someone else's hands again.Lucas and Leon stared, stunned. They never imagined that after six years, the once-fragile me could become so brave.I untied the ropes and

Mila was sentenced to exile in the northern ice fields, and my father's name was finally cleared.Kane and I were discussing when to bring my parents back to the pack for their retirement when a warrior rushed in to report that Mila had escaped from prison last night! The prison was heavily guarded, and Mila couldn't have escaped on her own. Someone must have helped her. There was no time to dwell on it. The seasoned Kane realized that Mila—a traitor familiar with the pack's secrets—escaping would inevitably bring disaster to the pack.He left at once for the Elder Council to explain everything. The pack needed to be ready for what was to come.Meanwhile, I had a suspicion in my mind. I took some people and went to the Black residence. There, Leon and Lucas sat stiffly in their seats. When they saw me, they both looked guilty."Mother, you're back? Now that Ms. Mila is gone, the three of us can be a family again. Won't you come home?" Lucas pleaded.I glared at Leon, my voice f

Kane's warriors pushed through the crowd and took Mila into custody. The onlookers buzzed with chatter."Oh, dear! It turns out Mila was the one colluding with vampires all along. She lost the battle and framed the Sutherlands!""I told you so. The Sutherlands never seemed like traitors. None of you believed me back then."Mila was in utter panic. She turned to beg Leon and Lucas for help."Leon, Lucas, save me! I'm being framed! Amelia must be holding a grudge, so she's deliberately trying to trap and take revenge on me!"Leon blocked the warriors. "Stop! Alpha Kane, you said I don't know how to be a mate. Well, this time I'll properly protect Mila."There's no proof yet, and the truth isn't clear. Tell your people to treat Mila with respect!"So, Leon did know how to follow procedure and demand evidence, not just listen to one side of the story. But that wasn't what he said back when my family was accused.Kane thought he was being absurd too. He chided loudly, "What an idi

Gasps rippled through the crowd. "It's the Alpha, Kane Frost! He's the most powerful Alpha in the wasteland! Amelia actually became his mate?"Kane jumped down from the vehicle. He released the full, overwhelming pressure of an Alpha, freezing everyone in place. He pulled Sean and me close, protecting us. "Darling, I'm late. Sorry you had to deal with this."I shook my head and leaned into Kane's embrace with Sean. After six months apart, Kane had lost weight.Leon gritted his teeth and said, "So it's you, Alpha Kane. I didn't know you had a taste for taking another's mate."Kane snorted with disdain. "Since six years ago, Amelia has been free! We became mates under the witness of the Moon Goddess."Besides, the fact that Amelia went to the wasteland alone in the first place proves she'd been without a mate for a long time."Take a good look, Alpha Leon. She bears my mark. We're mates!"Leon's face paled, and he fixed Kane with a resentful look. After a moment's thought, he sp

"How could this be? How did you suffer like that? Mila said she'd been to the wasteland. She said a pretty she-wolf like you wouldn't have any trouble there!"She said you'd just be reflecting on yourself there. How did this happen?" Leon asked in disbelief.I snorted coldly. "Mila said this, Mila said that. Don't you have a brain of your own? The wasteland is full of Rogues, and you thought it was safe? That's ridiculous!"Don't you know what dangers exiled wolves face in the wasteland? My parents are old. If I hadn't gone with them, and if I hadn't found someone to rely on, they would've died there long ago!"At this, Leon quickly asked, "Are Grandpa and Grandma okay? When I was little, Grandma loved me most. Do they miss me?"I couldn't believe Lucas had the nerve to ask that. Back when our family was accused, he joined Mila in calling them disgraces.Just then, a luxurious silver sports car slowly pulled up in front of us, and Mila got out. When she noticed how distraught Le
