Chapter 3

작가: Mini Gear
The dorm manager and a technician from the housing department arrived shortly after.

When the door to Room 503 swung open, the blast of heat sent everyone taking a collective step back.

It was 2:00 pm, and it was 100 degrees outside. The dorm windows were wide open, letting a relentless wave of scorching air pour into the room. Worse yet, the floor was drenched, covered in puddles of water.

The combination of intense heat and standing water turned the entire room into a massive sauna—stifling, humid, and completely suffocating.

The dorm manager's face turned sour. "Where did all this water come from? Did a pipe burst?"

Katie peeked out from behind Zoe, looking completely innocent. "Ma'am, that's natural water I brought up from the campus lake. I read online that splashing water on the floor cools things down through evaporation. It's the eco-friendly cooling wisdom of the ancients. Plus, natural water carries spiritual energy."

The technician stared at the lake water, which was giving off a fishy odor, and fought to keep his temper. "Miss, the ancients lived in well-ventilated courtyards. You live in a closed-off dorm building!

"Throwing stagnant water around in this heat just sends the humidity through the roof. Anyone staying in here is bound to get heatstroke!"

Katie pouted. "Sir, you shouldn't let modern science blind you. The wisdom of the ancients is never wrong."

Someone in the crowd gasped.

Yet, seeing her look so utterly righteous, others began whispering, "I mean, it's ridiculous… but she really was just trying to cool the place down. She's not the brightest, but her heart's in the right place. At least she meant well."

Just then, our fourth roommate, Rachel Lane, walked in from the balcony. A ring of angry red heat rash had already flared up around her neck, and she looked completely drained by the heat.

She glanced at the ruined insulin on the floor, then at the sweating Katie, and let out a long sigh. "Miley, Jane, let's just drop it. Katie just got here from a really remote area, so she probably doesn't know any better.

"She's just trying to help us get back to nature. She meant well. She was just sweating bullets over there, writing eco-friendly quotes. Let's just take a step back and consider it a good deed. We can bear with it, and it'll all pass."

There it was again. She meant well.

In my last life, that exact, casual phrase had shielded her from all the fatal damage she caused.

Katie's eyes immediately welled with tears as she looked at Rachel with profound gratitude. "Rachel, thank you for understanding. I just want to save everyone from the misery of material greed."

I locked my eyes onto Rachel. "She cut the AC cord, destroyed Miley's life-saving medicine, and tried to trap me—a heart patient—in a hundred-degree sauna. And you call that meaning well?"

Flinching under my gaze, Rachel shifted uncomfortably. Her voice dropped as she replied, "Well, she's already in this state. Do you really have to drive her into a corner?"

Before I could even speak, Katie suddenly lunged forward. She pulled a filthy cloth pouch from her pocket and carefully unwrapped it. Inside was a crumpled stack of pocket change.

"Miley, Jane, I know you both come from privilege. This is 30 dollars I saved up from collecting recycling. I'll compensate you. Go buy some popsicles to cool down. Just please stop holding a grudge against me."

She held out the money with both hands, tears streaming down her face. Combined with her faded clothes, she looked like a tragic victim out of an old period drama.

The tide in the hallway turned in an instant.

"Oh, come on. She's already offering the money she got from recycling. Is this really that big of a deal?"

"It's just a little heat. College students these days are way too high-maintenance."

"Live and let live."

Miley stared at the 30 dollars, shaking with pure rage. Tears welled in her eyes, but the suffocating weight of the crowd's judgment kept her from finding her voice.

Zoe sharply snapped at the crowd, telling them to clear the doorway, before turning to Katie. "Katie, destroying school property and ruining a classmate's expensive medication isn't something 30 dollars can fix. Come to my office."

Katie clutched the money to her chest like a martyr carrying her cross. She looked back over her shoulder with every step as she followed Zoe away.

Before she left, the look she gave me was filled with pity and a strange, unsettling fervor.

Ten minutes later, the wail of police sirens and ambulances tore into the campus.Several students who had collapsed from heatstroke were rushed onto stretchers, including Rachel. When they carried her onto the stretcher, her face was ghostly pale, and her entire body was soaked with sweat. As she watched the police put handcuffs on Katie, her eyes were filled with nothing but despair and remorse. The responding officer looked at the utterly obliterated power box with a grim expression. "You damaged public utility infrastructure and endangered public safety! This isn't a college disciplinary issue anymore. This is a felony!"Even as the officers shoved her into the back of the cruiser, Katie thrashed violently, screaming at the surrounding crowd, "I'm innocent! I'm suffering for all of humanity! You will thank me one day!"The police car door slammed shut, cutting off her fanatical delusions.…A few days later, the official verdict was released.Katie faced up to three years i

Since her actions involved intentional injury, theft, and multiple regulatory and legal violations, the university officially issued an expulsion notice and handed Katie over to the local precinct for investigation. The afternoon the decision came down, the National Weather Service issued the city's first red alert for extreme heat of the summer, with temperatures scraping 108 degrees.I was in my new single room, unpacking my things. Suddenly, with a dull pop, the status light on the wall AC went dark, and the cold air immediately died down into a lukewarm breeze. It wasn't just my room. Up and down the corridors of the women's dorm building, a chorus of screams and furious complaints erupted."What happened? Did the power go out?""Ah! My laptop! I hadn't saved my ten-thousand-word thesis!""It's blistering in here! What is going on in the dead of afternoon?"While everyone was reeling in confusion, Katie's screeching voice suddenly blared through a megaphone from right outsid

The school's disciplinary process moved fast.Faced with undeniable transaction logs, secret recordings, and hospital medical records, any excuse Katie tried to make fell completely flat.Zoe formally notified her that the university had initiated expulsion protocols.Furthermore, Katie was required to immediately return our 300 dollars in utility money, compensate Miley for her ruined insulin cooler, and cover my medical bills. But a person trapped in a martyr's delusion wouldn't listen to reason. The morning after campus security let her go, she cornered me in the lobby of the main academic building. It was the peak of the 8:00 am rush, and the lobby was packed with freshmen hurrying to class.Katie stood on the steps with a makeshift sign made from a scrap cardboard box hanging around her neck. Scribbled unevenly across it were the words "Public Penance".In her hands, she held a chipped, coarse ceramic bowl filled with a murky, dark-brown liquid that gave off an indescribabl

Finding out this much about Katie, I thought I'd already seen the absolute peak of her depravity. But I had still underestimated just how low an unhinged fanatic could sink.To fully investigate where this earth-saving money was going, Zoe opened Katie's Venmo transaction history and WhatsApp chat logs. What came up next made the entire conference room fall into a dead silence."Katie, what's this 350-dollar transaction?" Zoe pointed to a transfer made to a non-profit environmental organization called Lung of the Earth.Katie puffed out her chest proudly. "That's the charity fund I used to help save the Earth! I donated to them so they can plant trees in the desert. I even got a digital certificate naming me an Outstanding Young Eco-Advocate!""Is that so?" Zoe let out a cold laugh, then turned to look at the three of us. "Did everyone in your dorm chip in for a utility deposit on the first day of the semester?"Miley blinked, then it clicked. "Yes! Since this is the older dorm,

Once I was out of danger, campus security formally launched an investigation.Because the case involved a life-threatening medical emergency and online defamation, Zoe requested authorization from the school to confiscate Katie's phone to verify the source of the cyberbullying post on the forum.Katie clutched the phone in her pocket, guarding it like her last shred of dignity. "This is a violation of my privacy! I'll report you all to the Department of Education!"The security officer replied coldly, "You almost killed someone last night. If you don't cooperate with our investigation, we will have no choice but to hand this case over to the police."The mention of the police broke Katie completely. Shaking, she unlocked her phone.Zoe took the device and went through her social media apps. A few minutes later, her brow furrowed deeper and deeper until she finally couldn't help but gasp. She cast the phone screen onto the conference room's main monitor. "Katie, is this your idea

The blare of the ambulance siren cut through the early morning silence of the campus. When I woke up, I was already in the emergency room of the campus hospital. An oxygen tube was hooked into my nose, and the heart monitor was emitting sharp, rhythmic beeps.Dr. Ferrell, the chief of the emergency department, stared at my EKG, his face tight with anger as he slammed my medical chart onto the desk.Zoe stood by the side. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and her jacket wasn't even fully buttoned. "Dr. Ferrell, how's Jane doing?"Pointing at the vitals on the chart, Dr. Ferrell shouted loudly enough for his voice to carry into the hallway, "Ten minutes later, and she'd be dead! The patient has severe myocardial ischemia. She must strictly avoid extreme heat and respiratory irritants."But you people managed to trap her in a stifling, unventilated room and then forced her to inhale massive amounts of toxic smoke from low-grade chemical incense! This isn't a sleeping environment. Thi
