Chapter 4

작가: Mini Gear
As expected, the school's forum blew up completely that night.

An anonymous post titled "Pure College Student Tries to Save Power for Mountain Children, Ostracized by Materialistic Roommates" was pinned straight to the top.

It featured a few photos.

The first showed Katie, drenched in sweat under the dim light of a desk lamp, writing her eco-friendly quotes.

The second captured her from the side, weeping in the hallway while clutching her 30 dollars in change.

In the third photo, I was standing off to the side with my arms crossed and a cold expression, looking exactly like a vicious roommate using her power to bully Katie.

The caption was highly provocative. "What is wrong with this world? Someone is practicing spiritual devotion in the blistering heat for the sake of the planet, only to be forced to kneel and pay off high-maintenance roommates who can't live without AC. Do poor people and people with principles not deserve to go to college?"

The comment section was boiling over.

"The woman with her arms crossed looks incredibly petty and mean."

"Is not having AC really that big of a deal? I didn't even have a fan growing up, and I turned out fine. People these days are brainwashed by capitalism."

"My heart breaks for this eco-friendly lady. Seeing her hold out that money honestly makes me want to cry."

"Expose these spoiled roommates so the rest of us can avoid them!"

When Rachel handed me her phone, her expression was tense and uneasy. "Jane, look… Now that things have gotten this out of hand, why don't you and Miley just forgive her? Post a statement on the forum to clear things up. Otherwise, how are any of us going to show our faces in class?"

As I stared at the out-of-context photo, a familiar tightness gripped my chest, and my heart rate began to sputter and race.

I had been cyberbullied exactly like this in my last life. Back then, I had posted my medical diagnosis, photos of the severed AC cord, and pictures of Miley's ruined insulin.

But no one cared. They only remembered Katie's sweaty, innocent face, choosing to believe in their own narrative of a poor, suffering saint.

I took a deep breath and pushed the phone back. "She's posting lies. Why should I be the one to issue a statement of forgiveness?"

Zoe managed to find me a temporary bed in the dorm manager's office for the night. "The technician won't be able to fix the AC cord until tomorrow. Sleep here tonight. There's a ceiling fan. I'll push your single room approval first thing in the morning."

The office had only an old, creaking ceiling fan that did little more than move the hot air around, but it was still a massive upgrade from the stagnant lake-water sauna upstairs.

Around 2:00 am, just as I was drifting off, a violently pungent scent jolted me awake. It smelled like a cheap dollar-store incense mixed with the suffocating, stale smoke of a dying fire, forcing its way into my lungs.

I broke into a coughing fit. My heart rate instantly spiked to 120, and each breath became an agonizing struggle.

I forced my eyes open. By the faint light spilling in from the hallway, I saw that Katie had somehow slipped into the office.

She was holding an enamel mug stuffed with seven or eight cheap incense sticks, all pumping out thick clouds of smoke.

Standing right over my head, she began waving the fumes directly into my face like she was performing an exorcism.

"W-What are you doing?" I wheezed, clutching my chest as I recoiled.

Katie looked down at me, her face full of gentle devotion. "Jane, Rachel told me your heart was acting up. Your heart races because your mind is cluttered with too many distracting thoughts. You've been poisoned by the anxieties of modern life.

"I bought this calming incense just for you. Breathe it in. Connect with this primal smoke, let your mind settle, and your heart condition will heal itself naturally."

The thick, heavy smoke filled the tiny, unventilated office within seconds.

The hundred-degree heat, combined with the chemical irritation and a severe lack of oxygen, made me feel as if an invisible hand was crushing my heart.

"Get… Get out…"

I reached up to shove the enamel mug away.

Katie grabbed my wrist with surprising strength, and her eyes flashed with a fanatical intensity. "Jane, don't reject nature's gift! Breathe deep! Purge the industrial toxins from your body!"

My vision began to fail, and a tearing, sharp pain flared in my chest.

A second before losing consciousness completely, I fumbled for the phone by my pillow and used the last ounce of my strength to hit the emergency SOS button.

As the enamel mug shattered loudly on the floor, I collapsed onto the mattress.

The last thing I heard was Katie's panicked shriek. "Jane! Why would you rather faint than accept nature's healing?"

Ten minutes later, the wail of police sirens and ambulances tore into the campus.Several students who had collapsed from heatstroke were rushed onto stretchers, including Rachel. When they carried her onto the stretcher, her face was ghostly pale, and her entire body was soaked with sweat. As she watched the police put handcuffs on Katie, her eyes were filled with nothing but despair and remorse. The responding officer looked at the utterly obliterated power box with a grim expression. "You damaged public utility infrastructure and endangered public safety! This isn't a college disciplinary issue anymore. This is a felony!"Even as the officers shoved her into the back of the cruiser, Katie thrashed violently, screaming at the surrounding crowd, "I'm innocent! I'm suffering for all of humanity! You will thank me one day!"The police car door slammed shut, cutting off her fanatical delusions.…A few days later, the official verdict was released.Katie faced up to three years i

Since her actions involved intentional injury, theft, and multiple regulatory and legal violations, the university officially issued an expulsion notice and handed Katie over to the local precinct for investigation. The afternoon the decision came down, the National Weather Service issued the city's first red alert for extreme heat of the summer, with temperatures scraping 108 degrees.I was in my new single room, unpacking my things. Suddenly, with a dull pop, the status light on the wall AC went dark, and the cold air immediately died down into a lukewarm breeze. It wasn't just my room. Up and down the corridors of the women's dorm building, a chorus of screams and furious complaints erupted."What happened? Did the power go out?""Ah! My laptop! I hadn't saved my ten-thousand-word thesis!""It's blistering in here! What is going on in the dead of afternoon?"While everyone was reeling in confusion, Katie's screeching voice suddenly blared through a megaphone from right outsid

The school's disciplinary process moved fast.Faced with undeniable transaction logs, secret recordings, and hospital medical records, any excuse Katie tried to make fell completely flat.Zoe formally notified her that the university had initiated expulsion protocols.Furthermore, Katie was required to immediately return our 300 dollars in utility money, compensate Miley for her ruined insulin cooler, and cover my medical bills. But a person trapped in a martyr's delusion wouldn't listen to reason. The morning after campus security let her go, she cornered me in the lobby of the main academic building. It was the peak of the 8:00 am rush, and the lobby was packed with freshmen hurrying to class.Katie stood on the steps with a makeshift sign made from a scrap cardboard box hanging around her neck. Scribbled unevenly across it were the words "Public Penance".In her hands, she held a chipped, coarse ceramic bowl filled with a murky, dark-brown liquid that gave off an indescribabl

Finding out this much about Katie, I thought I'd already seen the absolute peak of her depravity. But I had still underestimated just how low an unhinged fanatic could sink.To fully investigate where this earth-saving money was going, Zoe opened Katie's Venmo transaction history and WhatsApp chat logs. What came up next made the entire conference room fall into a dead silence."Katie, what's this 350-dollar transaction?" Zoe pointed to a transfer made to a non-profit environmental organization called Lung of the Earth.Katie puffed out her chest proudly. "That's the charity fund I used to help save the Earth! I donated to them so they can plant trees in the desert. I even got a digital certificate naming me an Outstanding Young Eco-Advocate!""Is that so?" Zoe let out a cold laugh, then turned to look at the three of us. "Did everyone in your dorm chip in for a utility deposit on the first day of the semester?"Miley blinked, then it clicked. "Yes! Since this is the older dorm,

Once I was out of danger, campus security formally launched an investigation.Because the case involved a life-threatening medical emergency and online defamation, Zoe requested authorization from the school to confiscate Katie's phone to verify the source of the cyberbullying post on the forum.Katie clutched the phone in her pocket, guarding it like her last shred of dignity. "This is a violation of my privacy! I'll report you all to the Department of Education!"The security officer replied coldly, "You almost killed someone last night. If you don't cooperate with our investigation, we will have no choice but to hand this case over to the police."The mention of the police broke Katie completely. Shaking, she unlocked her phone.Zoe took the device and went through her social media apps. A few minutes later, her brow furrowed deeper and deeper until she finally couldn't help but gasp. She cast the phone screen onto the conference room's main monitor. "Katie, is this your idea

The blare of the ambulance siren cut through the early morning silence of the campus. When I woke up, I was already in the emergency room of the campus hospital. An oxygen tube was hooked into my nose, and the heart monitor was emitting sharp, rhythmic beeps.Dr. Ferrell, the chief of the emergency department, stared at my EKG, his face tight with anger as he slammed my medical chart onto the desk.Zoe stood by the side. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and her jacket wasn't even fully buttoned. "Dr. Ferrell, how's Jane doing?"Pointing at the vitals on the chart, Dr. Ferrell shouted loudly enough for his voice to carry into the hallway, "Ten minutes later, and she'd be dead! The patient has severe myocardial ischemia. She must strictly avoid extreme heat and respiratory irritants."But you people managed to trap her in a stifling, unventilated room and then forced her to inhale massive amounts of toxic smoke from low-grade chemical incense! This isn't a sleeping environment. Thi
