Chapter 4

Author: Chirping Cicadas
Soon, my colleagues Cora and Zac arrived.

We took Wendy to an empty classroom, with Cora taking out her notebook with a gentle smile. "I'm going to ask you a couple of questions now, Wendy. You have to answer me truthfully, okay?"

Wendy was a little spooked by the tense vibe, and was tugging on my sleeve with fear in her eyes. "Did I do something wrong, Daddy?"

"No," I smiled at her assuringly, patting her head. "You just have to tell that nice lady everything you saw."

Cora nodded and asked softly, "Wendy, did you talk to Carl earlier today?"

Wendy pursed her little lips as she nodded solemnly. "Yeah, I'm just curious why he isn't allergic to shrimp anymore… He never ate those before."

"What did Carl say?"

Wendy frowned as she tried her best to remember. "He put his hand on my mouth, and told me not to ask because he can't say… Then Ms. Ackles came to us. We didn't finish talking, and he ate the shrimp on his plate today."

Cora asked for more details, which Wendy answered seriously, and it didn't look like she was lying at all.

When it was over, Cora closed her notebook and told me, "She's innocent, judging from her testimony, and it's also shown on the cameras that Carl went to the pool on his own. Just take her home, let her get some rest—she must be in shock."

I nodded, taking Wendy's hand and was ready to leave when Lilian suddenly rushed into the room.

Cutting us off, her eyes were wide and bloodshot as she hollered, "No! You are not leaving!"

She even clawed towards Wendy, but Zac stopped her in time.

I frowned and argued, "Why are you stopping us from leaving? The investigation made it clear that she did nothing wrong. What happened to Carl was an accident…"

"Accident?! That's too much of a coincidence!"

Lilian kept screaming hysterically. "You're her dad and a cop! You'd definitely protect her! I won't believe anything in the police report now!"

The stalemate kept on until Commissioner King came to chase us all out.

After hearing what everyone had to say, he clapped Lilian's shoulder and said, "Rest assured, ma'am, we will handle this fairly. Officer Jackson volunteered to step aside to avoid suspicion, so it's his colleagues who will take the case.

"That's why I can assure you that there won't be bias, and we will tell you right away if there are any developments."

There was strength and authority in the commissioner's words, and seeing that determined look in his eyes, Lilian stopped freaking out.

Collapsing on her rump, she quietly sobbed.

I quickly took the moment to take Wendy's hand, quickly leaving the hospital.

Once we got home, Wendy was sulking and quickly fell asleep—it had been a long, scary day after all.

My mind was a mess as I sat on the living room couch too.

Then, I was cooking dinner when I stared at the vegetables chopping board, suddenly remembering Carl's allergy.

The entire incident had to revolve around that single factor, but there was nothing on the cameras.

But if Wendy was right, was there a blind spot in the cameras?

And why would Carl suddenly become so obedient, even eating the shrimp he was allergic to without being asked?

The way he acted strange in the afternoon and how he spaced out before falling into the pond… was that really all coincidences?

Even as I tried to connect all the dots, a particular name stuck out like a sore thumb.

Pausing, Quinn then finished, "That was the first time anyone defended me instead of blaming me for everything. That's why I always remembered you, and it's why I never intended to hurt Wendy."I felt a ton of different feelings just then, but fury drowned out everything else. "Even if you suffered misfortune and neglect, you don't get to vent your grudge on innocent children. They are living people, not tools with which you vent your feelings and impulse for control!"Yes, they may have shortcomings, but that can be corrected without hypnosis, threats or drugs!"As I finished, I was virtually yelling with irrepressible rage. "Not only did you kill Carl, you ruined the lives of the other children too! Your so-called correction is a crime!"Quinn hung her head in silence, her shoulder shaking as Cora and Zac led her to the patrol car.As they left, she was looking at me, her eyes filled with regret and despair. After she was brought to the precinct, she confessed to everything—a

I cried, "That looks bad! Let's go!"With that, we picked up our equipment and rushed out of the hotel, dashing straight for the kindergarten.Along the way, my heart threatened to leap out of my throat as I kept my eyes on the security footage feed, watching as Susie left the building.Where was she going? What did Quinn suggest in her mind?!Security tried to stop us when we reached the kindergarten.I flashed my badge, and they could see the grim looks on Cora and Zac's face, so they promptly cleared the way.We ran straight for the classroom, and immediately spotted Susie at the other end of the hallway, walking towards the field. She kept going despite her wobbly gait, and her eyes remained blank."Susie!" I rushed up to stop her, but she kept going like she didn't hear me, and kept murmuring to herself.I had to grab her just to hold her in place, and that was when I heard what she was saying, "Bad girl… Shouldn't steal crayons… I must be punished…"That was when Quinn

Carl was not so much 'cured' from his allergies as he was basically force-fed the shrimps he was allergic to. Even him falling into that pond had to be Quinn's doing! That was Carl starting to behave strangely—he probably knew too much, or was left broken by sheer terror.Taking a deep breath to keep my voice calm, I asked, "Anything else? Were there similar situations in her previous workplaces?""I got nothing for now, I'm still looking," Dean replied. "But I called in some favors to make inquiries—if there is, you'll know in the afternoon.""Alright, call me right away," I replied, and hung up.Turning to Zac, I saw that he had lowered his binoculars and was looking at me grimly. "Quinn made the kids stand at the back of the classroom just now. They were crying the whole time although we can't hear her… and that look on her face is really creepy."I looked through the binoculars to see that the two children were indeed standing at the corner at the back of the classroom, their

Through the lens, I saw Quinn standing in front of two children. Her smile was gone now—her expression was sharp as a dagger as she glared at the two arguing children. Both children still looked defiant for a second, but soon turned pale from her glare. They hung their heads, cringing and trembling as their eyes were suddenly filled with terror. And on Quinn's face was a faint smile that was so warped I felt a chill down my spine.Anyone could tell she loved ruling over the children's fears. That was when my phone vibrated—it was a call from Dean.I quickly picked up and asked, "Found anything?"'Yeah, more or less," he replied. "Quinn Ackles is the second of three siblings, having an elder sister and a younger brother. And the family cares the least about her."My fingers clenching around my phone, I gestured for Zac to keep watching the classroom while I moved elsewhere. "Yeah, keep going."Dean hence continued, "Her clothes were all hand-me-downs from her sister, and dinne

I was sure Quinn must be under huge pressure after what happened to Carl, with management speaking with her.Still, she spotted me just then. "Good morning, Mr. Jackson.""Good morning, Ms. Ackles," I replied nodding. "It must have been a tough few days, but don't blame yourself too much—what happened to Carl wasn't your fault."Quinn nodded. "Thanks, but it still hurts that something like this happened. I will be careful with the children next time so it won't happen again. I promise."I didn't say anything to that, only telling Wendy, "Be a good girl and listen to your teachers, okay? And get along with the other kids."Wendy nodded, still holding the teddy as she followed Quinn inside.I waited until she disappeared indoors, and pulled out my phone, tapping into the tracker app.It clearly showed her position moving toward the classroom. To be extra safe, I had Cora and Zac occupy a hotel room on the opposite street, which offered a clear line of sight to Wendy's classroom.

Whipping out my phone, I made a call to Dean Clarke—a small-time burglar I had arrested. After he was freed, he decided to change his ways and became a mechanic, even building a decent business. He was shrewd and well-connected, knowing both bigwigs and hood rats which helped him build an elaborate information network. In fact, I had always called upon him to help provide information I needed to crack cases for years now.For his part, Dean was always reliable, intent on atoning for his past mistakes. He soon answered, his voice booming cheerfully, "This sure is rare, officer. How can I help? Just say the word, and I'll do my best!""Yeah, I need a favor—I need information on a name, the more detailed, the better. ""Sure thing, officer!" Dean quickly replied. "I'll go ask right now, and tell you right away if I have anything!"He hung up—he always worked fast.I then walked toward Wendy's bedroom door to find her curling into a little ball. She wasn't crying, but she was purs
