“A…Aeron?”

I didn’t think I heard my own voice as my hand cupped his cheek with tears welling my eyes. I shook my head as he took a shaky breath and closed his eyes with a grimace that told me just how much pain he was in.

“I can pull it out of your back,” I offered. “How much does it hurt? Let me see.”

He turned around slowly to show me the silver knife lodged deep in his back up to the handle. His skin sizzled from contact with the silver blade of the knife, causing more damage than the stab wound itself.

“Don’t pull it out,” he told me with a shaky voice. “It’s only going to get worse. I don’t…”

I turned him around to face me. “Then what do I do? What do you…”

I paused as I looked around to look for Janet. If she had stabbed him, surely there had to be a spell that she could cast to stop this from going any further than it already was.
