“A…Aeron?”

I didn’t think I heard my own voice as my hand cupped his cheek with tears welling my eyes. I shook my head as he took a shaky breath and closed his eyes with a grimace that told me just how much pain he was in.

“I can pull it out of your back,” I offered. “How much does it hurt? Let me see.”

He turned around slowly to show me the silver knife lodged deep in his back up to the handle. His skin sizzled from contact with the silver blade of the knife, causing more damage than the stab wound itself.

“Don’t pull it out,” he told me with a shaky voice. “It’s only going to get worse. I don’t…”

I turned him around to face me. “Then what do I do? What do you…”

I paused as I looked around to look for Janet. If she had stabbed him, surely there had to be a spell that she could cast to stop this from going any further than it already was.

“Janet…?” I trailed off when I realized for the first time since Aeron had been stabbed, everything had become still. They were all staring, and nob

“You killed them all, Zara,” Darius reminded me for the umpteenth time as we walked through the woods and headed for the hideout where Gray had raised me as one of the rogues.“That’s what I believe happened, but what if someone managed to escape?” I asked him. “What if the person waited all this time just to strike me at the best time? I mean, these are people who know me very well. Whoever took Aaron probably targeted me and knows me very well.”“But we’re not sure about this, are we?” He asked with narrowed eyes to confirm. “I mean, that’s why we’re going there together and not with soldiers.”“I’m not sure about it, but I do have a bad feeling whenever I think about this possibility. It’s the closest I’ve ever felt to knowing where he is. You have to trust me on this, Darius,” I pleaded with him.“You know I do,” he assured me with a smile as he took my hand and we got closer and closer to finding the truth. If someone escaped the massacre that I had brought upon them, then not on

In the midst of all the worry and the search for Aaron, I hadn’t thought about the witches. And why should I have? I hadn’t made contact with them in a while. But the more I thought about it after Darius suggested we talk to them, the more I believed it was possible for them to have taken Aaron. After all, it was all tied to how Janet, their leader, had died. And I would be naïve to believe that they had completely forgiven me for the death of Janet.“Let’s go meet the witches,” I said to Darius, realizing just how empty I sounded.“We’ll find him, Zara. I promise,” Darius assured me, but the last thing I felt at the moment was hope.“Don’t promise things you’re not sure of, Darius. It’s only going to breed animosity if we don’t find him,” I told him as we walked back toward the woods. But as we got closer to George’s house, I stopped at the first house on the street and turned to Darius as I said, “Since we’re here, why don’t we just check the house just in case?”I could see the urg

“Who’s over there?!” One of the hunters called out with alarm as soon as we made it through the front door. Darius had tried to be as quiet as possible, but I couldn’t contain myself as long as my son was away from me and unsafe. The hunter came into full view, but I was quick to get his gun out of his grip with the wind, throwing it to the other side of the room as I made the man float in the air.“What do you think you’re doing back here after killing George?” He asked me, but here was obvious horror in his eyes.I scoffed and shook my head. Of course they all thought I was the one who killed George and not his daughter who was now the alpha of a pack.“Where is my son?” I countered his question with one of my own, and I knew that even he wouldn’t have me answering his questions if I was desperately looking for my child. It was a good thing that they knew what I was capable of. They would waste less of my time.“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” the hunter replied, his eyes

Darius and I burst into the bedroom, where Irene sat with tears in her eyes as she spoke to the pack doctor.“Give her a moment,” the pack doctor said to us as he put his hands out and urged us to stay put. “She doesn’t need more pressure right now. Irene, are you ready to tell us whatever you recall from the last time you were awake and conscious?”Irene made eye contact with me, and it seemed as if that triggered some sort of emotion within her. Regret maybe?“I’m so very sorry, Luna. I didn’t know…I don’t even know what happened. The last thing I can remember is me carrying him in my arms and trying to play with him. And then, I don’t know what happened after that.”I raised my brows at her as I waited for her to remember something. It was almost as if I was waiting for some sort of click. For her face to light up and her to say she remembered who it was, but it never came. She only put her face in her palms and cried.“Darius?” I called out to him, turning around to see him alread

“Aaron?!” I caller out in panic as I rushed into the bathroom to be met with nothing. I ran past Darius who was just entering the room and finding out what had happened.“Zara?” He called out to me, holding me in place and trying to get me to stop running around the room. “Did you see anyone when you came in here? It doesn’t seem like it’s been a long time since this happened.”“It’s not been a long time because she took him,” I accused, pulling myself out of his grip and running down the stairs as he ran after me.“Where is she?! In what direction did Deirdre leave from?!” I yelled at the soldiers I found at the entrance of the house. They pointed in one direction with confusion and panic on their faces as they asked if they needed to come with me.“We need two of you with us,” Darius answered for me as I ran toward where Deirdre was probably running away from.Tears blurred my vision, but I wiped them and blinked them back. I was not going to let this get to me. I had to get my son

“What?” I asked, but my voice wasn’t even close to being heard. Not even by Darius, who was standing right beside me. I had lost all control of myself. I wasn’t even sure that I was there anymore. Maybe this was all a horrible dream that I was starting to get more and more aware of.To make matters worse, Deirdre climbed the platform and people were clapping without the slightest hint of shock. They really had chosen her to be their alpha.“This is ridiculous!” Darius spoke up, and one by one, people started to turn to us.There were frowns on their faces when they realized it was me and Darius. It was as if we weren’t wanted there, but Deirdre had been the one to personally invite us so we would witness the beginning of our potential downfall.“And how is this ridiculous? Do tell,” one of the pack members said to him as if daring him to speak even more.“She’s a human. Humans do not rule over werewolves. In what world does that even happen? I can’t believe you all voted for her to be
