Chapter 56: The Price of Silence

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number. But I knew.

Tell David I’ll wire the money. Tomorrow at noon. No police. No exposure. Transaction happens. Everyone walks away.

I read it twice. Then I showed Sebastian.

“He’s paying,” Vivian said. She sounded almost surprised.

“He’s calculating,” David said. “He’s deciding which costs him more—five million or the damage.”

Sebastian dialed his father back immediately.

“He said yes,” Nolan said. Not waiting for hello. “Wiring it

I let it ring twice.Nolan was looking at my pocket. Sebastian was looking at me. Nobody in that foyer moved, and the grandfather clock seemed suddenly very loud.I took the phone out. No name. No number. Just a gray word on the screen: Unknown."Don't," Sebastian said."Answer it," said Nolan. "Put it on the speaker.""Why?""Because whoever wrote to me in that cell and whoever is calling you now have the same patience." He didn't raise his voice. "I'd like to hear what they say to you. So would my wife."Edna had her hand flat against the wall again. She nodded, once, without looking at anyone.I pressed the green button and held the phone out between us like something that might spill."Hello?""Good afternoon, Ma."The voice had been run through something. The edges were sanded off. I couldn't have told you whether it belonged to a man or a woman, young or old. It was just calm, and close, and in no hurry."Is Mr. Calloway with you? Both of them? Good. I'd like everyone to hear th

Chapter 72: The Wrong DriveWe didn't sleep. We lay on top of the covers, shoes still on, like we might have to leave in a hurry. At first we said nothing. Then we started in, low and careful, the way people talk in a house where someone is ill."Who knew," Sebastian said."Us.""David.""His mother.""Vivian.""Vivian was there," I said. "She was in the motel room. She heard all of it."He turned his head on the pillow. In the dark I could only make out the line of his jaw. "Then it's five people. And one of them told my father.""Or he guessed.""My father doesn't guess. People tell him things."The house ticked around us. A pipe in the wall. A floorboard giving up the warmth of the day. I listened to Sebastian breathe and counted the cracks in the ceiling, and somewhere past four I understood that he wasn't going to say the other thing, so I said it."What if he's right about the drive?""He isn't.""Rich said he knows which one was real. Sebastian, what if he found out it was a co

Chapter 71: The Lawyer I knew the voice before I reached the bottom of the stairs. I just couldn't place it.Ellery Rich stood in the foyer with his briefcase in one hand and his overcoat still buttoned. It was nearly eleven. He still had his hat on, and rain collected at the brim, falling to the marble one slow bead at a time. Tovia stood beside him, close, the way a hostess stands with the last guest of the evening."Mrs. Calloway," Rich said when he saw me. He nodded. He didn't smile. "Forgive the hour.""It's Mira." My hand stayed on the banister. "What are you doing here?""Mira," Tovia said, warm as bread. "Ellery brought good news. I didn't want Edna lying awake all night waiting for it.""You called him.""Edna asked me to."I came down the last few steps slowly. “Stay kind, my mother had said. Stay boring.” I could hear her saying it, that little lift on boring, her spoon tapping the rim of her cup. So I kept my voice flat. "What news?" Rich put his briefcase down on the hal

Chapter 70: Radiant Dinner was at seven because Edna had always eaten at seven. A husband in a cell and a son back from the dead, and the house still ran on its old clock.Tovia had set the table. Four places. She'd put me at the far end by the sideboard, where the chandelier light thinned out, and herself directly across from Sebastian, close enough to pass him the salt."You look radiant," she said to me, once the soup was down. "Truly. It must be the stress. It gives some people such a beautiful glow."Edna's spoon stopped halfway to her mouth."Thank you," I said. "I haven't slept in two days. I'll tell my skin."Sebastian made a sound that might have been a cough.Tovia laughed. It was a lovely laugh, low and easy, the kind you'd want to have yourself. "See, that's what I mean. You have such a direct way of communicating. It's almost refreshing." She tilted her head. "Almost."I put down my fork.I had spent years on the Atherton council. I knew about this move. "You mutter the

"Oh, Mira," Tovia said. She turned back to me. Her smile was very sharp now. "You're so brave. Really. Most women wouldn't have the confidence to……”“To what? I asked”Sebastian moved very quickly. He stepped between me and Tovia."Stop," he said. His voice was very quiet but there was something underneath it that made the entire room go very still. "Stop right now. I don't care if you've been in love with me for fifteen years. I don't care if you drove all night to be here. I don't care if my mother asked you to come. You will not speak to my wife like that.""I'm just being friendly," Tovia said. But her voice was shaking. Just slightly. Just enough to show that Sebastian had gotten under her skin."You're being cruel," Sebastian said. "You're being the exact thing I've been trying to escape for the past months. You're being someone who uses words like weapons. And I'm not going to let you do that to Mira. Not now. Not ever."He turned to me."Let's go," he said."Wait," Edna said.

Chapter 69: The HouseWe pulled into the driveway at 3:34 PM.The house looked exactly the same. Big. Quiet. The kind of place that swallowed you the second you stepped inside.Sebastian hadn't let go of the steering wheel. The engine had been off for minutes, and his knuckles had gone pale against the leather."She's here," he said.I could see Tovia's car parked near the garage. A sensible sedan. The kind of car someone drives when they want you to know they're responsible."How do you know," I said."Because Edna called while we were driving," he said. "She said Tovia had arrived an hour ago. She said Tovia was already in the kitchen making tea."He turned off the engine.Neither of us moved."We should go in," I said."I know," he said. But he didn't open the door. The silence stretched, and I understood that once he did, nothing would go back to the way it was. Walking into that house meant facing his mother. It meant facing Tovia. It meant whatever happened next would happen in
