Chapter 3

Penulis: Holly
Not only was I stunned, but Serena was too.

It was a full thirty-minute drive from where we were to the city center.

Instead of looking for another healer nearby, Dad and Leo were ordering the only person staying with me to go help Monica.

Looking at my eyes, which I could barely keep open, Serena instinctively refused. "No! It would take me over an hour to get there on foot. Why can't you find someone else?"

But the person on the other end of the walkie-talkie gave her no chance to refuse. "The ambulance is already on its way. You won't be needed once it arrives. Besides, this is an order. You have no right to refuse!"

I shook my head at Serena, signaling that she should go.

My fingertips weakly brushed against the ground, and an aching emptiness settled in my chest. For a moment, I thought I saw Leo smiling at me.

He'd worked relentlessly to become captain of the patrol team. He told me that only then would he be qualified to mark me.

The werewolf who had once promised to protect me for the rest of my life was now robbing me of my only chance to survive.

But I was going to die soon anyway. Whether Serena stayed or left no longer mattered.

Leo repeated his order through the walkie-talkie. "I'll say it one last time. This is an order, and the Alpha knows about it too."

Serena gave me one last look. She seemed reluctant. In the end, she could only leave the medical kit behind and hurry away.

After taking a few steps forward, she turned around and said, "Don't worry. I'll find someone to come back for you. I promise you will be saved."

I lay alone among the ruins. Every breath felt like broken glass scraping against my lungs.

A violent coughing fit forced out a mouthful of bloody phlegm. I tried to speak again and finally managed to utter a few words.

Facing the walkie-talkie, I asked the question that had been tormenting me. "Leo, why did you insist on sending Serena away?"

Leo sounded surprised and relieved that I could speak. Then came a long silence.

When he finally spoke, his voice was full of reproach. "Because you–"

I struggled to move my lips. "Why?"

I wanted to know the truth even if I was going to die.

Leo spoke slowly. "Because you're making Monica feel terribly guilty. She thinks she's responsible for your injuries and refuses to cooperate with her treatment.

"The Alpha and I came up with this solution. If Serena agrees to come back, it'll prove that your injuries aren't serious, and Monica can stop worrying and focus on her treatment."

I suddenly wanted to laugh. Even after Monica had been brought to the healer's den, she was still finding ways to rob me of my chance to survive.

My chest felt painfully tight. It was filled with resentment.

I hadn't cried when I was gravely injured. I hadn't cried when they chose to bring Monica back first.

But now, tears spilled from my eyes and mixed with the dirt on my face.

Not long after that, the walkie-talkie crackled again, and Leo's agitated voice came through. "Winnie, the ambulance has been delayed by a landslide blocking the road. It's going to be a while before it can get through. Hang on a little longer and try to keep your injuries under control."

Only a faint, hoarse sound came from my throat. I couldn't speak anymore.

He didn't notice anything was wrong and continued talking as if nothing had happened. "Monica's been worried about you the entire time. Don't make her worry even more. Be strong, and stop causing trouble for everyone.

"The Alpha has already sent an ambulance for you. You'll be rescued soon. Once you get back, I'll make it up to you."

Even at a time like this, they still thought I was the one at fault.

The agony I was going through from being on the verge of death meant nothing to them. Instead, I was expected to tiptoe around their feelings and make sure I wasn't a burden to anyone.

It didn't matter anymore. I could barely hear anything now.

  • Left to Die in the Ashes   Chapter 9

I'd never seen Dad and Leo look like this before. They sat beside my hospital bed and stared at my motionless body with looks of regret on their faces.Dad held my hand tightly while calling my name.It had been so long since I'd heard him speak to me in such a gentle voice.Unfortunately, no matter how many times he called my name now, I would never respond with the same enthusiasm I'd shown him as a pup.Leo gently ruffled my hair and reminisced about our past together. He thought I'd somehow hear him if he talked long enough. "Winnie, the truth is finally out. It was my fault. I had so many opportunities to save you, but I failed to take even one of them."They spent hours talking beside my bed. They kept vigil over me throughout the night. The following day, Dad began making arrangements for my funeral. The funeral was simple, and it was attended by only a few people close to me.Leo slumped beside my body while repeating my name over and over.Dad, the stern and unyield

Dad paused and turned to face Monica in confusion. "What is it?"Monica's expression turned tense. She stammered, "T-Things were pretty bad when it happened. If you watch the footage, it'll only upset you more. Maybe you shouldn't watch it."Leo sneered as if he'd seen through her. "Monica, she's your elder sister. Don't you even care about her? Don't you want to know why Winnie's injuries were so severe that she died before the ambulance could reach her?"Monica was left speechless.Dad turned on the laptop and watched the entire surveillance footage. The footage clearly showed Monica ignoring my warnings and crossing the border without permission. Fooling around, she'd set off fireworks. She'd accidentally set fire to the buildings and vegetation along the border. To protect Monica, I'd taken the full impact of a falling beam. When the footage ended, the ward fell completely silent.Monica, in particular, was frozen in place. She couldn't even utter a single word.Dad looked

Not long after, the witch arrived at the ward. She gently pressed her fingertips against my forehead and slowly probed my body with her mind.A moment later, she exited the ward with a grave expression and looked at the two werewolves waiting in the hallway. "Alpha, Winnie was indeed poisoned by silver. Her wolf had been damaged, and she couldn't have healed in such a short period of time."Dad and Leo froze at the same time.Dad's eyes went wide, and his body stiffened slightly. He'd always believed that my claims about being injured at the border were nothing but lies.Still, he'd had some doubts because my injuries hadn't looked particularly serious on the surface. The witch continued speaking. "On top of that, Winnie suffered severe internal injuries. It looks like she was struck by an object. I recommend that you investigate exactly what happened."Dad and Leo glanced solemnly into the ward I was in before looking at each other. They then headed to Monica's ward. When they

There was a brief silence on the other end of the call.Dad's steady voice had stopped abruptly. A moment later, the sound of something hitting the ground came through. When he spoke again, his voice was filled with disbelief. "Say that again. What happened to Winnie?"Leo lowered his gaze to my cold, lifeless body before repeating himself. "Winnie is dead. By the time we arrived, she'd already lost all vital signs. Her internal injuries were too severe. She didn't survive long enough for us to rescue her."Silence lingered on the other end for a long time before Dad finally spoke again. He sounded utterly drained. "Bring Winnie back immediately."The walkie-talkie call ended.Leo held me tightly in his arms and remained silent for a long time.I watched as tears fell one after another onto my body. He was crying in secret.Only when the healer urged him to move did Leo finally come back to his senses. He carefully lifted me onto a stretcher. He then helped the healer carry me

My soul separated from my body. I floated midair as I watched Leo kneeling before my corpse with a blank expression. His hand hovered under my nose. It was trembling violently. His eyes were filled with terror, and he couldn't believe I had stopped breathing. He called my name over and over. He even sounded angry. "Winnie, are you pretending to be dead just to get a reaction out of me? Can you stop acting for once? Alpha and I don't have the patience to keep indulging you!"When I didn't move, he pressed his fingertips desperately against the side of my neck. He was trying in vain to find a pulse. His tone sounded stern, but his voice trembled. "Stop messing around, Winnie! Wake up!"I wanted to tell him that I couldn't wake up anymore, but I couldn't make a sound. All I could do was watch him break down and scream in anguish. The werewolf who had once promised to protect me for the rest of my life was now lying beside me in ruins.Leo abruptly turned around and shouted for a dif

The voice coming through the walkie-talkie seemed to grow fainter and fainter, while everything before my eyes became increasingly blurry.I could no longer feel any physical pain. Gradually, I lost all sensation.I thought I could hear Dad's faint voice coming through the walkie-talkie. "Winnie, can you hear me? The ambulance will be there in three minutes. You'll be safe soon."He continued, "Don't blame me for what I did. I believe you can understand why I had to do it. I'll be waiting for you to come back."As I listened to Dad's voice, I recalled how he'd held me after Mom died and promised that from then on, we would always have each other.Later, he brought Monica home, and I had to share half of his affection with her. At first, it was a toy. Later, it was a bag of snacks. Eventually, it became a piece of jewelry and even an entire room.Whenever I showed the slightest sign of dissatisfaction, Dad accused me of competing with Monica for his affection. But I wasn't.
