LOGINDylan stood on the roof of the mansion, staring silently into the dark sky. The wind ruffled his hair as he lifted his face, eyes closed.
He hadn't been able to concentrate since he locked Scarlett in the dungeon. Which came as a surprise because nothing ever kept him up this way. Nothing ever occupied his mind the way the human did. And it angered him. The trapdoor behind him opened and he slowly turned around. Bevvy stood there, clad in white shorts and a pink t-shirt. She was the only woman who knew the right buttons to push, to calm him down. Usually, one look at Bevvy and her voluptuous body sent him spiralling into a sea of lust and desire. She alone had that hold on him. But tonight, as he stared at her, he felt nothing. "I was looking for you." She said as she stepped out of the trapdoor and shut it. She was a petite brunette with mad curves and seductive eyes. He turned away from her without a word and resumed his brooding. For the very first time, he didn't want her. He didn't go to her. Not discouraged by this, Bevvy walked up to him and slid her hands under his shirt, touching him in the familiar way that usually made him excited. "What are you thinking about, Alpha?" She purred. "It's unlike you to stay away from me." "Not tonight, Bevvy." Dylan murmured, and this surprised her. She drew back, a small frown wrinkling her brows. "What's wrong? Is it the human?" His eyes grew dark at the mention of Scarlett. "Don't speak of her in my presence." "I just want to know what's got you so restless." Then she took his hand and tried to lead him back into the mansion. "Come with me. Let me make you feel better." It should have worked. It always worked. But tonight, it didn't. He didn't feel the slightest desire to fuck her that night. "Go home, Bevvy." He said, slowly withdrawing his hand from her grip. "I need to be alone tonight. When I need you, I'll call you." Bevvy was hurt, but she knew she couldn't protest because she and Dylan didn't have anything serious going. She helped him satisfy his sexual urge, and in return, he paid her well. That was the life she had been living since her mate rejected her. "Alright." She nodded. "I'll keep the mind link open, in case you change your mind." She turned and walked away, quietly shutting the trapdoor behind her. Surprised and a bit annoyed at his behavior, Dylan exhaled and turned around. What the hell was wrong with him? Did he really just reject a perfect woman because he couldn't stop thinking about Scarlett? Changing his mind, he rushed to the trapdoor and slid back into the mansion, intent on finding Bevvy and bringing her back. But halfway, he came across Jordan. The latter looked panicked. "What's wrong?" He asked. "Dylan, I know you said no one should see her, but I just couldn't let her starve." Dylan frowned. "What are you talking about?" "I went into the dungeon to check on Scarlett, but she's in bad shape. Really bad. She could die." Dylan felt something awaken within him, something that felt like fear. He instantly forgot about Bevvy and changed directions, heading towards the dungeon. "Get Hope." He ordered. "Tell her to come immediately." Jordan had assumed Dylan wouldn't care, and he had been ready to beg him. But seeing him react that way sparked a little hope in him. Maybe he wasn't all that ruthless after all. "On it." He answered and hurried back the way he came. Dylan didn't bother taking the stairs. He stepped into the terrace and leaped down, landing easily on his feet. Then he cut through the short path behind the mansion and arrived at the dungeons in a matter of seconds. The first thing he saw was the tray of food Jordan had brought with him. The gate of the cell was opened, and he finally saw Scarlett. She was curled into a tight ball, her broken arm stretched before her. The chains around her wrists had been unlocked. She wasn't moving. He crouched beside her and pushed back the thick strands of wet, red hair from her flushed face. The heat of her skin scalded his palm. She was burning up. A look of worry flashed through his eyes, too quick to be seen. Without wasting another second, he pulled her into his arms and lifted her, cradling her close. Her head fell back limply, and for once, he felt fear. Real fear. If she died, it would be on him, and he would be back at the beginning, searching for a human with royal blood. He hurried out of the dungeon, holding her close. He could feel the heat from the fever burn through his clothes, making him realize just how critical it was. Hope had just arrived with Jordan when he stepped into the mansion. "My bedroom," was all he said as he brushed past them. He rushed up the stairs, occasionally glancing down at Scarlett. He couldn't even hear her breathing. He kicked the door open and carefully laid her on the bed. Then he stepped back as Hope rushed to the side of the bed and pulled out her healing herbs and potions. "Get her out of that dress." He murmured softly. "Get her into something comfortable. And do everything you can to save her." Hope turned and nodded. "I promise, Alpha. I will save her." Without another word, he turned and walked out of the room. As he left the mansion, he spoke through the mind link to Jordan. [Jordan, stay back and keep an eye on Scarlett. If you need anything, let me know immediately.] [Got it, Alpha.] Jordan replied swiftly. Closing the link, he stepped out of the mansion and walked into the night. Despite the surrounding being dark, he could clearly see the path before him. He followed it until he stopped in front of Bevvy's cottage. He started to knock when the door opened and she stood there, a warm smile on her face. "I didn't expect you to come." She said. "I'm not here for sex, Bevvy." He muttered. "My bride is sick, and she's being tended to. I don't want to be in the same space with her." Bevvy instantly understood. She stepped back and let him pass before shutting the door. "You can take the bedroom..." She began, but he interrupted her. "You don't have to give up your bedroom. I'll stay in the sitting room and leave first thing in the morning." "As you wish, Alpha." She said and headed straight to the room. But at the doorway, she stopped and turned. "Is this how it's going to be now?" He gave her an odd look. "What do you mean?" "Now that you have a bride and will be wedded soon, does this mean you won't need me anymore?" That was a tough question, one Dylan couldn't easily answer. He walked up to her, and as she reached out to touch him, he stopped, just out of reach, not making an attempt to bring her close. His eyes were unfocused, like he wasn't fully concentrating on her. "What we have is special, Bevvy." He said. "But remember it's not a relationship. You need to refrain from asking questions like that." That hurt, but Bevvy nodded. "Goodnight, Alpha." She turned and disappeared into the room, while Dylan remained where he stood. He had lied when he said he didn't want to be in the same space with Scarlett. The truth was, he couldn't bear to be beside her knowing he was the reason she was badly hurt in the first place.Hours later, just when the sun had started to sink into the horizon, Scarlett stepped out of the mansion. She looked breathtaking, dressed completely in gold and silk. The Moon Diamond sat around her neck perfectly, like it was made for her.Her regal gown flowed behind her in a long train, arranged occasionally by two maids who followed behind. When the maids and the guards spotted the diamond around her throat, they couldn't help but whisper amongst themselves. The legend of the Moon Diamond was well known across the realm. Only the strongest Alpha could own it, and only a worthy person could wear it. If they didn't have enough respect for Scarlett before, it tripled now. Jordan and Caleb were waiting with the carriage beside the courtyard when she stepped out. Caleb's jaw literally dropped when he spotted her. His eyes grew emotional, and he smiled. Scarlett noticed their looks and smiled shyly. "What? Do I look okay?""Is that a trick question?" Jordan chuckled. "You're abs
Scarlett's Luna coronation was extravagant. Dylan completely went all out, throwing the biggest celebration the shifter clan had ever seen. Special invites were sent to neighboring packs, both far and near. The coronation was the talk of the whole realm. That morning, the Moon Sanctuary had been decorated beautifully. The maids had been working overtime, preparing the food, the drink, and everything else that was needed for the event. The entire pack was a beehive of activities. Up in Dylan's room, Scarlett paced around nervously, not dressed yet. The preparations reminded her of her wedding day. Though her wedding hadn't been as grand as this, it still managed to make her nervous. Her hand lowered to her stomach. She couldn't feel any movement, but the thought of a child, their child, growing inside her was overwhelming. In seven months, she would be a mom.She walked up the mirror and stared at her stomach, stroking one hand over it. "How can I love something I haven't even see
Hope hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I know it's still a little too early to be sure, but I didn't want to wait. I figured it would be better if I drew your attention to it first...""Hope, whatever it is, just say it," Dylan said impatiently, trying his best not to snap. "It's the fetus. It doesn't seem normal."Dylan brows knitted into a frown. "What do you mean?" he muttered."When I ran a checkup on her while she was unconscious, I didn't feel the slightest sign of life. Usually, when I run tests on pregnant shifters, it is easy to feel the tiniest form of life during the first week. But Scarlett is two months gone, and there is no sign of life."Dylan didn't panic. He merely brushed her concerns aside. "Maybe it's because she's a human, and not a shifter.""I don't think that's the reason," Hope shook her head. "I wouldn't tell you this if it wasn't important. I think the fetus might be lifeless."Dylan's eyes flared bright gold. A warning look flashed across his burnin
Scarlett was speechless for a moment. Her eyes darted between Dylan and Hope. "What'd you say?" she asked finally in a breathless whisper. "You're pregnant," Hope repeated. "It's confirmed. Eight weeks."Scarlett's mind raced. Eight weeks. That was two months. How had she missed her period and never noticed? Two months ago, they were still at Eryndor. The night she begged Dylan to make love to her must have been the night she conceived. A smile slowly broke out on her face, and she turned to Dylan who had tears brimming in his eyes. Her heart melted. He was crying. "I'm pregnant," she repeated. "Oh God, I don't believe it. We're going to have a baby."Dylan cupped her face and kissed her, his eyes tightly shut. His emotions were all over the place, and he didn't know how to express them without feeling overwhelmed. Hope quietly left the room, giving the two of them privacy. Dylan held Scarlett like he was afraid to let go, like she was the most delicate flower in his hands. On
Scarlett was in a tight spot, and she knew she had to make a decision soon. The omega kneeling before her didn't make things easier. He had his head lowered, tears streaming down his face as if he already knew he was going to die. "I can't let him die," she whispered, running a hand through her hair. "I can't let him die in my place, but if I drink the wine, I'll die, and if I back out, the entire trial will be cancelled. All my efforts will be wasted."There was no way out of it. She looked towards Dylan. He was staring straight at her, his expression unreadable. It was almost like he was expecting her to walk away and let the omega drink the wine. But she couldn't do that. She couldn't let someone die in her place, even though he was the weakest member of the pack. She shut her eyes, trying to think. Back in Eryndor, her father had taught her a lot of things, and one of them was finding loopholes. There was a loophole in every challenge of life, and there was certainly one in th
The third trial took place in the open space beside the courtyard, right in front of the mansion. The crowd of shifters were already gathered, eager to witness the last trial. Scarlett stood beside a wooden box, where the lots were kept. She had changed into a plain, velvet, flowing green dress, with the neckline drooping off her shoulders. She wore no jewelry, and her hair was woven into a simple weave. A few meters away, Dylan stood to the side, his hands clasped behind him. Several guards pounded their fists on two loud drums in a synchronized beat, making the atmosphere solemn and filled with tension. Jordan finally stepped towards the center of the open space and stopped beside Scarlett. "Are you ready?" he asked warmly. Scarlett gazed at him for a moment, then turned her eyes to Dylan. He gave her a small nod, a smile tugging at his lips. She smiled back and nodded at Jordan. "I'm ready.""Before you draw the lots, you need to let the pack know that you abide by the rule
Scarlett had just rushed out of Dylan's room and was running towards the stairs when she came face to face with Helgar and Beowulf. She stopped short, almost colliding with them. "Lady Callahan." Helgar exclaimed. "Where are you off to in such a rush?"Scarlett stepped back and tried to calm her
Scarlett expected a brutal kiss. She expected a kiss that would leave her lips bruised, a punishing kiss fueled by the hate between them. But the moment Dylan's lips closed over hers, every single thought in her head evaporated. He kissed her like he had done it a million times, lips sliding over
Dylan stopped paying attention to Beowulf and Agravain the moment he saw Scarlett. Now, watching her stop to chat with Jordan, he couldn't take his eyes off her. He noticed how easily she smiled at him, as if they had always been friends. She had never smiled at him that way. Of course he didn
It took Hope all night to bring Scarlett's fever down. The sun had started to peek out of the horizon when she heaved a sigh of relief and collapsed into a chair. Beside her, Jordan was fast asleep, bent uncomfortably on the other armchair. He had been awake all night too, making her realize just
