Chapter 2

Autor: Until September
Claire frowned. "Nathan, what do you think you're doing?"

I took out some cash and gently set it next to the baby. "We've been classmates for years. You just had a baby. Shouldn't I give you something nice?"

The next moment, a non-disclosure agreement appeared in my inbox. The agreement stated that if Damian ever learned about Claire and me, the medical team treating my mom would pull out.

But what made my blood run cold was seeing my mom's name already on the document.

My mom's liver cancer had relapsed, and the cancer cells were spreading rapidly. The doctors were at a loss. Claire was the one who introduced me to a senior she'd known in graduate school, whose team specialized in treating difficult cases. Thanks to him, my mom's condition finally stabilized.

I never thought Claire would use my mom to threaten me.

Damian looked at Claire, puzzled. "What's with the attitude, Claire? Your classmate's just trying to be nice."

He took out a small box and opened it to reveal a diamond-encrusted Vacheron Constantin watch inside. "You're Claire's old classmate. It'd be rude of us to accept your gift without giving you something in return. Here, take this."

Ryan spoke up from the side. "Just take it, Nathan. Damian has plenty of these at home."

Damian laughed. "Exactly. Go ahead and take it. My wife buys me watches like this all the time. Sometimes she even gets the whole set. She really goes overboard."

A wave of bitterness washed over me.

Claire had always acted like she was broke when we were together. Once, she wanted to buy me a pair of shoes I'd liked on my birthday. But she'd complained that her boss had docked her commission that day, so I insisted we buy a secondhand pair online instead.

I looked around at our group of friends. One by one, they avoided my gaze and made excuses to leave the room.

It turned out it wasn't just Claire's marriage they'd kept from me. They'd all gone along with her pretending to be broke, too.

I could almost imagine how they must have mocked me behind my back while pretending to sympathize with me to my face.

I took the watch and walked out of the hospital in a daze.

When I got back to the hotel, I finally broke down.

When Claire and I were together, our friends joked about how broke we were. I worked part-time while studying to help pay my mom's medical bills, while Claire was just as badly off, stretching every dollar as far as she could.

We used to believe that if we worked hard together, life would eventually get better. Back then, we were so broke that we could barely afford a two-dollar bowl of street noodles, yet we'd sit there talking until the place closed.

After graduation, she insisted on returning to her hometown to start a business, while I accepted a job offer in Westhaven. We promised each other we'd work hard to build a better life. At the airport, she held me tightly and promised we'd get married once I bought a house.

I waited six years for that promise.

For those six years, I ran myself ragged. I worked during the day, took freelance jobs at night, and taught classes at a training center on weekends. When I was pushing myself the hardest, I slept only four hours a day for three straight months and nearly landed myself in the ER.

Yet I was happy then. It never crossed my mind that none of it was real.

I turned and walked away, only to hear hurried footsteps behind me. It was Ryan.He caught up to me and grabbed my sleeve, breathing hard. "Nathan, I'm sorry. I didn't know Damian would go that far. I thought he just wanted to scare you..."I stopped and turned to him. "Were you the one who twisted my wrist that day?"The knife should have struck Claire in the chest back then. But at the very last second, someone had forcefully twisted my wrist, turning the blade back toward me.Ryan had wrestled when he was younger. His grip was stronger, and his reflexes were quicker than most people's.Seeing the color drain from his face, I threw his own words back at him. "Ryan, no matter how close we are, I can't take your side on this. You're an accomplice."Two weeks later, the police arrested Damian for deliberately causing my mom's death and ordering others to destroy evidence. The Pierce family's legal team tried to argue for lesser charges, claiming the incident had stemmed from an em

On the screen, a group of people stood around my mom's hospital bed, relentlessly insulting her."You're that homewrecker's mom, aren't you? Serves you right! You deserve cancer!" one of them snapped.Their abuse only grew harsher. My mom lay curled beneath the blanket, her body so thin she was barely recognizable. She couldn't even bring herself to raise her head. Gripping the edge of the bed, my mom pushed herself to her feet and walked barefoot toward the window. When the crowd realized what my mom was about to do, they showed no remorse. Instead, they egged her on. "Jump, you old hag! Come on, let's see if you dare!"My mom climbed over the windowsill without a moment's hesitation. Then a dull thud sounded on the recording, followed by a chorus of screams.Someone frantically made a call, and Ryan's voice came through on the other end. "What are you panicking about? The Pierce family will take care of this."The ballroom went dead silent. The color drained from Damian's fa

Claire's expression darkened. "Nathan, stop saying things you don't mean."I yanked my hand free from hers. A dull, tearing pain shot through my wound, but it was nothing compared to the anguish I felt inside. The next morning, I checked myself out despite my doctor's advice and flew straight to the hospital where my mom had been treated. The hospital administrative staff looked uneasy when they saw me. "Mr. Holt, we've already sealed your mom's medical records. If you want to access them, you'll need to follow the proper procedure...""Fine. I'll do just that." I pulled out my phone right in front of them and called the city's health commission."Hello, I'd like to file a formal complaint against Haine Hospital for illegally destroying patient surveillance footage. The matter involves a medical dispute and a suspected criminal case. I'd like to request intervention from the higher authorities."The administrative director's face went white. "Mr. Holt, please, there's no need for

Before the officer could respond, Claire's hand gently settled on my shoulder. "Nathan, your mom died from her illness. Could you be remembering it wrong?"Then she turned to the officer. "I'm sorry. He just lost his mom. He may not be in the right state of mind..."I angrily shoved Claire aside. "What are you talking about? You told me you'd help me look into what happened to my mom!"Claire patiently tried to calm me down. "I did look into it, but your mom really did die from her illness."My blood ran cold. How was that possible? The caregiver had video-called me. I'd seen my mom lying on the ground outside the hospital with my own eyes.My hands shook as I scrambled to check my messages. But to my horror, the entire chat history was gone. The video was gone, and even the call log had been wiped clean.I looked up at Claire, who looked completely calm. "Nathan, you've been under too much stress lately. You need to rest.""Did you delete them?" I whispered. She didn't deny i

As my consciousness faded, I heard panic in Claire's voice I'd never heard before. "Nathan, hold on! Stay with me!"How ironic. After ten years together, the first time I'd ever heard her speak to me that way was when I was about to die. When I woke, all I saw was a stark white ceiling. The sharp smell of disinfectant filled my nose. I tried to move my fingers, and a tearing pain shot through my chest.Claire was asleep at my bedside. She jolted awake at the sound, and her eyes reddened when she saw that I was awake. "Nathan, you're awake! The doctor said you almost died. Do you know how scared I was?"I turned my face away. I didn't want to look at her putting on an act. "Has my mom's funeral been held?"Claire went silent for a few seconds before answering. "She's already been cremated. Her ashes are being kept at the funeral home. You can pick them up whenever you want."I stared at the stark white ceiling as tears slipped down my cheeks. I didn't even get to see my mom one la

I was the one kept in the dark for six years. I was the one who'd lost my best years to a lie. And now, I was the one the entire Internet was calling a homewrecker. So, why the hell should I apologize?"Your post has seriously hurt Damian," Claire said. "He's already preparing to sue you. If you don't apologize, even I won't be able to protect you!"I closed my eyes. "Fine. I'll apologize."The moment I went live, people started flooding in to curse me out.A wry smirk tugged at my lips. "I'm sorry. I apologize for not keeping my head down and quietly swallowing this bitter pill. I should've just accepted that the woman I'd been with for ten years had married someone else. So what if she cheated on me? It's no big deal."Claire quickly shut down the livestream before I could say anything else. But by then, "Homewrecker Damian Pierce" was already at the top of the trending searches.Claire laughed in anger. "Nathan Holt, you're going to regret this!"A chill ran down my spine.
