Chapter 5

مؤلف: Floaty
Robert explained, "Clary, don't get the wrong idea. Mikayla just wanted to see what it's like to try on a wedding dress, and she doesn't really have any male friends. You know how women are. They see something online and want to try it for themselves."

There was a time when I begged him, over and over again, just to go try on a wedding dress with me. He said I was being influenced by the internet, that a wedding dress was just a piece of clothing, and I was making a big deal out of nothing.

Yet here he was, carving time out of his schedule to accompany Mikayla to try on wedding dresses.

I didn't feel like saying another word. I turned and started to leave, but Mikayla quickly stepped forward and grabbed my wrist.

"Clarissa, Mr. Fuller is telling the truth. If you're still upset, you can take it out on me!"

Before I could react, her body tilted, and she collapsed toward the floor with a soft cry.

"Ouch!"

She gently clutched her ankle, her face turning pale as if she were in real pain. "Rob, I think I twisted my ankle. It really hurts."

Upon seeing this, Robert shoved me aside and rushed to her, steadying her as he looked at me, anger blazing in his eyes.

"Clarissa Skriver, you've gone too far!"

He scooped Maya into his arms and marched out of the boutique without the slightest hesitation.

As I watched his retreating figure, all I felt was a bitter sense of irony.

This wasn't the first time Mikayla had used such a pathetic stunt to frame me. I used to think that Robert was just being misled, but now I understand.

He wasn't blind. He just didn't care.

He had never loved me, which was why he was so willing to take her side every single time without ever getting the full picture.

When I got back to my apartment, my phone kept lighting up with messages, all from Robert's business account.

"Clarissa, get to the hospital right now and apologize to Mikayla. If you don't, I'm pushing the wedding back indefinitely. I don't care if your grandmother's dying. I'm not backing down!"

The messages were radiating pure, unadulterated selfishness.

He even dragged Grandma into it.

I was so angry that my stomach churned.

I deleted and blocked his business account without another thought. After that, I logged into the company's HR portal and formally submitted my resignation.

The moment it went through, it felt as if the heaviness that had been sitting on my shoulders for so long had finally lifted.

Meanwhile, Robert had just finished sending his threats, his expression dark with irritation.

"Rob, do you think Clarissa's really mad at me?" Mikayla murmured. "It's all my fault. If it weren't for me, none of this would've happened."

"It's not your fault. She's the one being unreasonable," he reassured her, his tone laced with certainty. "Don't worry. I'll make this right for you."

In the past, whenever he used the wedding as leverage, I would always give in first. He believed this time would be no different.

But early the next morning, he got a call from the HR department.

"Mr. Fuller, Ms. Skriver has tendered her resignation. She's very adamant about it. We couldn't persuade her to stay."

The moment Robert heard that, his anger flared, and he drove straight to our apartment.

But when he opened the door, all of my belongings were gone.

He pulled out his phone and tried to message me from his business account, only to realize that account had been blocked, too.

A flicker of unease rose in him, and it peaked the moment he saw the wedding invitation on the table.

I was listed as the bride, but Robert wasn't the groom.

In an instant, all the color drained from his face. The invitation slipped from his hand and fluttered to the floor.

When I was busy, Nathan would quietly take care of everything at home. When I ran into difficulties, he stayed by my side and worked through them with me.He remembered every single one of my preferences and made me feel cherished beyond measure.Grandma's health improved more and more each day, and before long, she was discharged from the hospital. She would often hold both my hand and Nathan's, smiling so widely that she could hardly contain her joy. She said this was the most at ease she had ever felt in her life.As for Mikayla, I only heard about her situation from a former colleague. Her defamation case was finally settled. The court ruled entirely in Robert's favor, ordering her to issue a public apology and pay a massive sum in damages and legal fees. The compensation was substantial, and she had little savings. To avoid prison time, Mikayla had no choice but to list the house her parents had left her for sale and borrow money from family and friends before she could bare

Robert cried, "Have you forgotten those days when we lived in a cramped rental apartment, eating whatever we could salvage when we first started the company together? "Have you forgotten the first birthday I celebrated for you, when you cried and said we would be together forever?"Clarissa, I know I messed up. I know Mikayla lied to me and that I've been neglecting you. Just give me one more chance, and let's start over, okay?"His voice was thick with desperation and reluctance as he called for me over and over again, recounting memories he had long since forgotten.Dad heard the ruckus and stepped out to handle it."Robert, haven't you caused enough of a scene? Clary stayed with you for seven years. You know exactly how much she suffered and how much she endured. You couldn't give her the stability she wanted, and you never made her feel valued."Now that she's found someone who will cherish her, how do you have the nerve to come here and cause a scene? What's the point of sa

Mikayla added a lengthy caption to the post, implying that she and Robert had been in a long-term relationship. She even hinted at the sacrifices she had made for him, only to be mercilessly dumped. The story went viral on social media, quickly climbing the trending topics.Robert's company had been preparing to go public. The negative press hit hard. Stock projections wavered, and anxious investors began flooding his office with inquiries. When Robert learned what had happened, he was livid. He immediately ordered the legal department to handle the fallout."File a defamation suit against Mikayla immediately," he barked. "I want a public apology and every single piece of fabricated content deleted."After the call ended, he posted an official statement on the company account."The intimate photos circulating online have been maliciously doctored. My relationship with Mikayla Glenn has never exceeded a professional capacity. We have initiated legal proceedings to hold those resp

Robert said, "Trust me. I've already seen Mikayla for who she really is. I fired her this morning. She won't show up in front of us again."I can put the IPO on hold, too. I'll go and arrange it this second. Every plan can be pushed back. I don't need anything as long as you cancel the wedding, as long as you don't marry Nathan!"He stepped closer as he spoke, but Grandma stopped mid-motion, the comb pausing in my hair. She pinned him with a cold, steady gaze."Love doesn't work that way. Just because you decided to turn back doesn't mean she has to be waiting for you right where you left her. For your sake, Clary has already endured more than enough. Don't ever come looking for her again."Robert turned to Grandma, his voice frantic. "I know I made a mistake. I'll treat her well from now on. I'll give her the life she deserves. Please talk to her for me.""There's nothing to talk about. I don't need anything from you."I finally lifted my eyes and looked at him."Robert, I alre

Robert sat in his car dejectedly, unable to move for the longest time. All he could see in his mind was me.He recalled the way I used to run into his arms when I was younger, the way I handled the company for him, the light I always left on when he came home late, and the calm, distant look in my eyes the last time I saw him.All the things he once took for granted had been forged into a blade that now pierced right through him.The day before the wedding, I spent the entire day going over the venues with Nathan, confirming the schedule and double-checking every detail. No matter how tedious the preparations became, he remained right by my side, patient and composed. Every decision, he asked for my opinion first, always putting how I felt ahead of everything else. This feeling of being valued was both unfamiliar and heart-warming.We didn't talk much, and there was no grand gesture. Instead, we simply focused on getting everything right.Nathan remembered that I didn't like ov
