Chapter 3

Author: Mudskipper
"Just take care of yourself. As long as you're safe, we're satisfied. As for Lana, as long as she's still breathing, who cares what she's doing out there?"

Every time Mom mentioned me, her voice was filled with impatience.

Maybe it was because I'd grown up outside the pack. I was ignorant of its customs and always embarrassed her.

In their eyes, Eve was their only daughter.

At that very moment, they worried endlessly about Eve's safety. None of them worried about me even if I was their biological daughter.

I wondered what expressions they would wear the day they learned how I had died.

After all, my death was entirely Eve's doing, and they were her accomplices.

Mom gently told Eve to get some rest before hanging up. The moment the call ended, Lucian called.

"Lucian, when are you coming back? Eve's been waiting for you to watch her competition!" Mom asked impatiently before he even had a chance to speak.

The day I was brought back home, everyone else had surrounded Eve and comforted her. Only Lucian had stayed by my side while gently ruffling my hair and telling me not to be nervous.

In that cold family, he was the only one who had ever shown me warmth.

There was a brief pause before Lucian spoke. He sounded confused.

"Isn't it Lana's aptitude evaluation? I thought that wasn't until next month–"

Mom cut him off impatiently.

"Lana this, Lana that! Is she the only person you ever think about? How many times do I have to tell you? Eve is your real sister. Lana doesn't deserve to be part of this pack!"

Lucian sighed softly. He couldn't understand Mom's hostility toward me.

"Mom, don't believe everything Eve tells you. Lana is actually kind and well-behaved. You should pay more attention to her.

"I just called her, but she didn't answer. She hasn't replied to any of the messages I sent a few days ago either. Isn't she home?"

Mom snorted nonchalantly.

"She's an adult werewolf now. How could I possibly control her? She's probably off fooling around somewhere again. Tomorrow is Eve's hunting competition. If you can't make it back, forget it."

A few seconds later, she added coldly, "You tell Lana this. If she thinks disappearing will make her dad and me worry about her, she can keep dreaming. If she doesn't show up at Eve's hunting competition tomorrow, then she can forget about ever returning to the pack.

"Dad and I will never acknowledge her as our daughter again!"

Lucian tried to defend me, but Mom had already hung up.

Dad returned with the search party and noticed her irritated expression.

"Did something come up during the corpse examination?"

Mom shook her head. "It's Lana again. She's probably complaining to Lucian about how terribly we've treated her. Those two must've joined forces to skip Eve's competition on purpose."

Dad's expression darkened. "She knows how much the pack needs us, yet she still insists on causing trouble. She's becoming completely unreasonable! I'm calling her right now."

He dialed my number again and again. Every single call ended the same way. There was no answer.

"What an ungrateful child. It would've been better if we'd never found her in the first place. All she's ever done is cause problems!"

An elder standing nearby frowned after hearing everything.

"When Lana disappeared years ago, the two of you resigned from your duties without hesitation and searched for her for an entire year. Now that you've finally brought her home, why do you treat her like your enemy?"

I sniffled. Tears welled up in my eyes.

It was only because when I was found, I was a filthy, timid pup who knew nothing about pack customs.

When I returned home at fifteen, I walked alone into that enormous, luxurious house. The first thing I saw was my parents holding Eve tightly in their arms while gently comforting her as she cried.

Meanwhile, I stood there in patched clothes and lowered my head awkwardly as I stared at my mud-caked shoes.

Eve looked at me, wiped away her tears, and asked with feigned innocence, "Who is this dirty girl?"

My parents' expressions immediately darkened. It wasn't because Eve had been rude, but because I didn't resemble the noble, elegant daughter they had imagined.

-

"We've already confirmed it. No missing werewolf reports have been filed by any pack members in the past week." A warrior stepped forward with the records.

"A pup disappears, and her family never even reports it? Were they not close?

"How could parents possibly care so little about their own pup's safety?"

The murmurs echoed around me. The overwhelming grief left me unable to breathe.

My parents would fight for justice when hearing about a murdered stranger.

Yet it had never crossed their minds to wonder whether I was even alive during the days I'd been missing.

Back then, when I disappeared as a pup, they had abandoned everything to search for me for an entire year.

Now, they simply believed my disappearance was another stunt to get attention.

Maybe I never should have come back.

This was Eve's home. It had never been mine.

The love my parents once had for me had long since been stolen by Eve.

Not long after that, Mom collapsed from overwhelming grief.Dad scooped up a spoonful of soup and gently held it to her lips. "Honey, open your mouth."Mom's eyes were dull and lifeless. She moved only because he told her to.She couldn't accept the truth that the adopted daughter she'd poured all her love and effort into had taken the life of her own biological daughter. She lived every day consumed by remorse. Eventually, her mind broke under the weight of it.Dad could no longer bring himself to serve as leader of the pack's warriors.I had been murdered because of the enemies he'd made through his position. The guilt left a traumatic wound that would never heal.He let out a long, weary sigh. "If we'd known this would happen, we never would've treated Lana the way we did. We were never worthy of being her parents."Now she's gone, and you've tortured yourself into this state. I don't deserve to remain a warrior anymore."Mom simply kept fidgeting with a moonstone ring betw

  • Love Me After I Die   Chapter 11

Watching the triumphant smile on Eve's face made me sick.Every bit of her happiness and every one of her accomplishments had been built upon my corpse. Why did the one who caused my death still get to bask in praise and applause?Every werewolf in the audience praised her."Her sister just passed away, and she still managed to perform this well. That's incredible.""I heard her sister was difficult and always caused trouble. That's probably why the rogue targeted her."Hearing those remarks, Eve's smile grew even brighter. She seemed to be savoring the success of her plan.Several uniformed pack warriors walked up and seized her all of a sudden. The smile on her face instantly disappeared."There must be some mistake! I didn't do anything!"Lucian snorted. "You're exactly who we're here for. You act obedient, but you're more vicious than anyone in this pack."Being arrested in front of the entire crowd, Eve could no longer maintain her obedient facade. Her eyes blazed with

"William and Helen, what a perfect couple."When you killed my little brother, did you ever imagine this day would come?"Mom demanded through agonizing tears, "Your brother murdered another werewolf! He deserved to die! What did Lana ever have to do with it?"The more devastated my parents looked, the more exhilarated Ian became."The greatest crime she committed was being born as your daughter."Do you remember what you told her before she died? You said you regretted bringing her home. You said she didn't deserve to be your daughter."She would've died with everlasting resentment. But luckily, I gouged out her eyes. In a way, I did her a favor."His grin widened. "As expected of your biological daughter, she was tougher than I expected. I flayed her alive, ripped out her tendons, and carved away pieces of her flesh one by one. She never even screamed once."She just kept saying how amazing her parents were. She believed you'd avenge her."She wouldn't stop talking, so I rip

At first, when I saw Mom crying for me, I thought she'd finally regretted the way she'd treated me.To my surprise, she still trusted Eve so completely.Eve was clearly one of the werewolves indirectly responsible for my death. When I was alive, all I'd ever wished for was that my parents would finally see through Eve's lies and believe me instead. Now, I only wanted to see their faces when they finally learned the truth.Dad quietly glanced at Eve before motioning for Lucian to follow him into the study.Mom continued holding Eve tightly. It was like clinging to her last remaining source of comfort."Eve, now that your sister is gone, you're our only daughter."While halfheartedly comforting Mom, Eve casually scrolled through her phone."Eve, are you hurt?" Mom noticed a shallow scratch across Eve's arm.It was the mark I'd left when I struggled against her that day.Eve quickly covered it with her sleeve. "It's nothing, Mom. I accidentally scratched myself while training."

That night, Dad forced me to kneel all night as punishment. If Lucian hadn't pleaded with him repeatedly, I never would've been allowed back to my room at dawn.Through that incident, Eve fully realized where she and I stood in my parents' hearts. From then on, she became even more brazen.Whenever she practiced hunting, she forced me to play the prey. With the sharpened claws she'd deliberately filed to razor points, she slashed me again and again. She'd then run to my parents in tears, complaining that I refused to cooperate with her training. My parents believed everything she said. What awaited me was always another round of punishment and harsh scolding. The moment Lucian learned of my death, he rushed back to the pack. When he arrived home, my parents were sitting on the bed with grief-stricken expressions on their faces while they looked at my photos and cried silently.Beside them, Eve dabbed at her tear-filled eyes and sniffled softly."Lucian, you're finally back. • Love Me After I Die   Chapter 7

"Lana, how could this happen to you?"When you first came home, you were so thin you were nothing but skin and bones. I even told your dad we should buy you nutritious food and pretty clothes."But later, I started hating how you didn't understand our customs. I hated how you always fought with Eve. I often caught myself thinking, what if you had never gone missing?"And now you've left us. Do you really want your dad and me to spend the rest of our lives drowning in guilt?"Among werewolves, shedding tears was considered shameful. Yet Dad cried without restraint."Lana, I'm sorry. It's not that I didn't love you. I just wanted you to stop being so disobedient."If I'd known that would be our last conversation, I never would've forced you to attend Eve's competition. You have a competition next month too, don't you? Your mom and I will go with you."Lana, please come back to us."My heart ached terribly. I fought back the overwhelming bitterness inside me.If only they had sai
