Chapter 2

Author: Mudskipper
Right then, Dad frowned and instinctively reached for his right leg.

An old comrade noticed his movement and asked, "Is your old injury acting up again?"

Dad answered without thinking. "It's nothing. I just took the herbs Lana found for me."

Right after he said that, he froze.

The daughter they constantly called rebellious had actually remembered the chronic injury he had suffered in battle years ago.

His old comrade patted him on the back.

"You should spend more time caring about Lana. After all, she's your own flesh and blood."

Dad disagreed immediately.

"A few days ago, Eve kept hoping Lana would come support her during the werewolf aptitude evaluation, but Lana never showed up.

"She broke her promise and ruined Eve's concentration. That's why Eve only earned a B grade.

"Lana often disappears for ten days or even over two weeks at a time. She could die somewhere and nobody would even know. Her mom and I have tried so hard to raise her, yet she turned out rotten!"

Hearing those words made my heart grow cold.

'Dad, Mom, how can you say that I refuse to come home? I'm right in front of you!' The daughter you called ungrateful already died the night you held Eve's wolf spirit awakening ritual.'

At the pack meeting, everyone wore solemn expressions after hearing Mom's examination report.

My body had been so badly mutilated that no werewolf features remained for identification.

The dense forest where I was found wasn't the actual murder scene, making it nearly impossible to track down the killer.

Dad ordered the warriors to widen the search and investigate every suspicious clue.

"Take another careful look. See if there's anything we've missed. Extract a blood sample and send it to the healer's den immediately."

After giving the order, he left with the warriors to continue searching.

Dad showed more concern for an unidentified corpse than he had ever shown for me.

Once, Dad had affectionately held Eve's hand and told her that warriors were the pack's sacred guardians, but I had seen Eve smile obediently until he turned away. She then ridiculed warriors by calling the profession dangerous.

That day, I slapped her across the face. As a result, Mom punished me by locking me in confinement for three days.

Now, Mom gently picked up a few strands of my remaining hair and murmured, "This poor werewolf died such a horrible death. I can't imagine how heartbroken her parents will be."

I laughed bitterly at myself.

If they ever learned that I was dead, they would probably feel relieved.

Perhaps only my brother Lucian Garren, who was out there somewhere, would truly mourn me.

Mom's gaze landed on the scar across the back of my hand.

It was the scar a rogue had left behind when I went missing as a pup.

When I first returned to the pack, Mom noticed it while helping me change clothes. Her voice had been filled with disgust.

"Why do you have such an ugly scar on the back of your hand? Wear a glove and cover it up. Don't scare Eve."

I subconsciously held my breath from being nervous. Would Mom finally recognize me because of that scar?

Would she realize that this mutilated corpse was her own daughter?

Instead, she merely said in a professional tone, "It's an old scar. It wasn't caused during this incident. It's irrelevant."

At that moment, one of Mom's apprentices suddenly cried out, "Mentor! There's a piece of paper still inside the victim's stomach!"

Mom quickly took it, glanced at it, and shook her head.

"It's badly corroded. Have the witch try restoring whatever writing remains."

Right then, Mom's phone rang. It was Eve's personalized ringtone.

Immediately, Mom set aside everything she was doing and hurried away from the crime scene. The tenderness in her voice was almost unrecognizable.

"What is it, sweetheart? I'm working right now.

"Tomorrow's hunting competition?" She barely paused before answering.

"Don't worry. No matter how busy your dad and I are, we'll be there.

"Your sister? Who knows where she's off fooling around these days. I doubt she'll come."

Eve's deliberately disappointed voice drifted through the phone.

"Oh, I was really hoping Lana would come watch me compete. With her cheering me on, I'm sure I'd do even better.

"Even if she doesn't want to come, I understand. After all, I did take everything that was originally supposed to be hers."

I snorted. Ever since I returned home, she'd made my life miserable. She'd even secretly framed me countless times.

Yet somehow, in front of our parents, she always managed to look like the victim.

From experience, I already knew what Mom would blame me next.

Sure enough, her tone turned harsh.

"Don't say that! You're our precious daughter.

"Lana stole pack supplies and constantly bullied you behind our backs. She doesn't even deserve to be my daughter.

"Don't worry. Even if she dies, I'll drag her corpse to your hunting competition!"

Sensing Mom's anger, Eve quickly acted sweet. "Don't be mad, Mom. As long as you and Dad come, I'll be happy."

She then added with feigned concern, "Dad mentioned a rogue has been attacking people lately. Lana is always running around outside. Mom, remind her to be careful too."

Not long after that, Mom collapsed from overwhelming grief.Dad scooped up a spoonful of soup and gently held it to her lips. "Honey, open your mouth."Mom's eyes were dull and lifeless. She moved only because he told her to.She couldn't accept the truth that the adopted daughter she'd poured all her love and effort into had taken the life of her own biological daughter. She lived every day consumed by remorse. Eventually, her mind broke under the weight of it.Dad could no longer bring himself to serve as leader of the pack's warriors.I had been murdered because of the enemies he'd made through his position. The guilt left a traumatic wound that would never heal.He let out a long, weary sigh. "If we'd known this would happen, we never would've treated Lana the way we did. We were never worthy of being her parents."Now she's gone, and you've tortured yourself into this state. I don't deserve to remain a warrior anymore."Mom simply kept fidgeting with a moonstone ring betw

  • Love Me After I Die   Chapter 11

Watching the triumphant smile on Eve's face made me sick.Every bit of her happiness and every one of her accomplishments had been built upon my corpse. Why did the one who caused my death still get to bask in praise and applause?Every werewolf in the audience praised her."Her sister just passed away, and she still managed to perform this well. That's incredible.""I heard her sister was difficult and always caused trouble. That's probably why the rogue targeted her."Hearing those remarks, Eve's smile grew even brighter. She seemed to be savoring the success of her plan.Several uniformed pack warriors walked up and seized her all of a sudden. The smile on her face instantly disappeared."There must be some mistake! I didn't do anything!"Lucian snorted. "You're exactly who we're here for. You act obedient, but you're more vicious than anyone in this pack."Being arrested in front of the entire crowd, Eve could no longer maintain her obedient facade. Her eyes blazed with

"William and Helen, what a perfect couple."When you killed my little brother, did you ever imagine this day would come?"Mom demanded through agonizing tears, "Your brother murdered another werewolf! He deserved to die! What did Lana ever have to do with it?"The more devastated my parents looked, the more exhilarated Ian became."The greatest crime she committed was being born as your daughter."Do you remember what you told her before she died? You said you regretted bringing her home. You said she didn't deserve to be your daughter."She would've died with everlasting resentment. But luckily, I gouged out her eyes. In a way, I did her a favor."His grin widened. "As expected of your biological daughter, she was tougher than I expected. I flayed her alive, ripped out her tendons, and carved away pieces of her flesh one by one. She never even screamed once."She just kept saying how amazing her parents were. She believed you'd avenge her."She wouldn't stop talking, so I rip

At first, when I saw Mom crying for me, I thought she'd finally regretted the way she'd treated me.To my surprise, she still trusted Eve so completely.Eve was clearly one of the werewolves indirectly responsible for my death. When I was alive, all I'd ever wished for was that my parents would finally see through Eve's lies and believe me instead. Now, I only wanted to see their faces when they finally learned the truth.Dad quietly glanced at Eve before motioning for Lucian to follow him into the study.Mom continued holding Eve tightly. It was like clinging to her last remaining source of comfort."Eve, now that your sister is gone, you're our only daughter."While halfheartedly comforting Mom, Eve casually scrolled through her phone."Eve, are you hurt?" Mom noticed a shallow scratch across Eve's arm.It was the mark I'd left when I struggled against her that day.Eve quickly covered it with her sleeve. "It's nothing, Mom. I accidentally scratched myself while training."

That night, Dad forced me to kneel all night as punishment. If Lucian hadn't pleaded with him repeatedly, I never would've been allowed back to my room at dawn.Through that incident, Eve fully realized where she and I stood in my parents' hearts. From then on, she became even more brazen.Whenever she practiced hunting, she forced me to play the prey. With the sharpened claws she'd deliberately filed to razor points, she slashed me again and again. She'd then run to my parents in tears, complaining that I refused to cooperate with her training. My parents believed everything she said. What awaited me was always another round of punishment and harsh scolding. The moment Lucian learned of my death, he rushed back to the pack. When he arrived home, my parents were sitting on the bed with grief-stricken expressions on their faces while they looked at my photos and cried silently.Beside them, Eve dabbed at her tear-filled eyes and sniffled softly."Lucian, you're finally back. "Lana, how could this happen to you?"When you first came home, you were so thin you were nothing but skin and bones. I even told your dad we should buy you nutritious food and pretty clothes."But later, I started hating how you didn't understand our customs. I hated how you always fought with Eve. I often caught myself thinking, what if you had never gone missing?"And now you've left us. Do you really want your dad and me to spend the rest of our lives drowning in guilt?"Among werewolves, shedding tears was considered shameful. Yet Dad cried without restraint."Lana, I'm sorry. It's not that I didn't love you. I just wanted you to stop being so disobedient."If I'd known that would be our last conversation, I never would've forced you to attend Eve's competition. You have a competition next month too, don't you? Your mom and I will go with you."Lana, please come back to us."My heart ached terribly. I fought back the overwhelming bitterness inside me.If only they had sai
