LOGINI am having a heart attack when Scott Lakin locks me inside the car. It's because my pain is frightening his childhood sweetheart. In response to my desperate pleas for help, he merely utters coldly, "I'll let you out when you apologize." I go into shock and have to be rushed to the hospital. I call Scott a dozen times, but he just blocks me. Finally, after I get discharged, I see him carefully feeding his childhood sweetheart chicken soup. "Have some food, darling. What if the baby in your belly is hungry?" After that, I return to my hometown without saying a word and stay there for half a month. After blocking me everywhere except the music streaming platform, Scott suddenly starts frantically searching for me. "Jennie, why didn't you add me back on Facebook this time?"
View More‘Kiara, I'll be back… I promise.’
Would he?
Weren't her dreams becoming too wild recently?
Killian never said goodbye whenever he left.
His business trips could take days, weeks, or even months, but he never told her goodbye.
Kiara only always knew about his trips from his assistant.
Wasn't this dream an irony to her reality?
Wasn't Killian being too affectionate in this dream?
Was this a sign that better days were coming?
“Mommy…”
The tiny voice of a child gradually pulled her away from her sleep, bringing her back to reality… to the hospital’s ward.
Kiara fluttered her eyelids, rubbing the sleep off her eyes.
Opening her eyes to the sight of her daughter lying on the bed, she tried to force a smile, to look normal.
If only her heart was strong enough not to break each time at the sight of her baby looking so frail and pale.
“Hey, Baby…” She reached out to stroke her raven black hair, a stark resemblance to Killian's hair.
Having the same thick brows and thin lips, Lily could look exactly like her father if she didn't have Kiara’s oval face and round eyes.
“When's Daddy coming, Mommy?” She murmured, her lips pursing. “I miss Daddy.”
Kiara did too.
Strangely, Killian didn't answer her phone calls.
Ever since Lily's illness acted up and she was brought to the hospital three days ago, not an hour passed by without her trying to reach him on the phone.
The phone would ring until it stopped. However, he never called back.
“Baby, remember I told you that Daddy needs to work hard.” Kiara’s lips ached from faking a smile.
But she couldn't break down now. Not in their daughter's presence.
The last thing she wanted was her baby sensing something was off. She'd rather have her believe they were a perfect family.
“Daddy's currently busy and can't come home now.”
“You always said that, Mommy.” Lily sighed, gloom spreading across her face.
The glimmer in her eyes was long gone, and the more days that passed, the more her eyes dimmed. “Daddy doesn't need to make more money. I just wanna hug him.”
Her eyes watered up.
Kiara couldn't stand it.
She feared that if she spent another minute here, she'd break down from seeing her daughter in this state.
Sometimes, she hated herself, and sometimes, she hated him.
But Killian had been very busy ever since his father passed away a year ago and he had to assume the president’s position of RK Business Empire.
He'd made her know that he wouldn't have time for them.
She couldn't be any more understanding.
“It's okay, Mommy…” Just like hers, her daughter's smile was broken and weak. “I know Daddy loves me. When he comes back, I'll tell him that I love him too.”
Kiara chuckled.
Who was she kidding?
Lily was only three years old but with an IQ of a genius.
She was only deluding herself, thinking her baby didn't know what was going on.
Her sad smile revealed it all.
Unable to hold back her tears, Kiara leaned forward to kiss her on the forehead. Then her baby whispered, “I love you too, Mommy. I love you and Daddy.”
“Mmm.” Kiara choked on her words. “We both love you, Baby.”
But she couldn't remain sitting there.
Fearing she'd get too emotional again, she left the ward, looking for the nearest washroom.
She could use the bathroom inside the ward, but then, her baby would hear her cry and that would only break her already weak heart further.
“Mrs. Reid, are you alright?” She bumped into the nurse on her way, almost crashing into the medication cart.
Kiara stood up straight, composing herself. “I- I'm fine.”
“I'm about to change Lily's drip-”
“Please go ahead, I'll be right back.” She cut the nurse, hurrying in the opposite direction.
She didn't need to go far. She wasn't supposed to cry.
Her daughter needed her by her side,
But,
If only Killian could answer her calls.
If only he could spare a minute to at least speak with his daughter on the phone.
For a three-year-old, she was already going through a lot. Funny how the little girl always preferred her Daddy's company.
Leaning against the wall in the hallway that led to the washroom, Kiara dialed his number again.
The phone rang as usual. He didn't answer.
She tried three more times. Killian didn't answer the phone.
Who else could she reach out to?
Even his assistant’s line was switched off.
Slowly, a foreboding feeling rose in her heart.
What if something bad had happened to him? Was that why he didn't answer his phone?
However, she had to be positive.
If anything went wrong with his trip, it would have been broadcast on the media by now.
Shoving those horrible thoughts aside, Kiara pulled herself together and walked away.
She hadn't taken three steps yet when the corner of her eye caught sight of a familiar figure.
Was that Killian?
The tall figure that just strode out of the elevator was definitely her husband.
She couldn't see his face properly because his back was to her, but that dominant aura screamed of his presence.
He appeared to be in a rush.
Was he coming for them- for Lily? Did he hear about her illness?
Weird though.
Killian was going in the opposite direction, his footsteps hasty.
Kiara called out his name but he didn't seem to hear her.
Their daughter’s ward was in a different hallway. Was he given the wrong room number?
Her heart coming back alive with the hope that Lily would soon smile again, Kiara hurried after him.
By the time she caught up with him, she was already gasping for breath.
He was so fast! Was he so worried about their daughter?
“Killian-”
“Killian.”
She trailed off because someone else called out his name at the same time she did.
A young lady came out of the ward he stopped at, running straight into his arms. “What took you so long?”
“Why did you bring him here?” His deep voice had an irritated tone to it. “I told you not to bring him here.”
“I had no choice, Killian, please don't blame me!” The lady sobbed. “This is the best Children’s Hospital in the country. Do you want us to lose him?”
My mother and I moved to a small farming village in Wemberly Hills. Like our hometown, its main industry was agriculture.I used ten years' worth of savings to start a farm. My plan was to settle down and start a new life here with my mother. With a lot of hard work, the farm quickly came to life. Moreover, it also brought in a great deal of wealth for us.As for Scott, I happened to learn what happened to him one day.Apparently, after I vanished, he had kept looking for me. He'd even threatened Simone so that she would tell him my address.Thankfully, Simone was already well prepared. She moved from that toxic place, and Scott was never able to locate her again. After that, Scott was so busy trying to win me back that he stopped paying attention to his business. In the end, spies infiltrated the company and stole some confidential documents.Instantly, the company went bankrupt.Once again, Scott became as broke as he used to be ten years ago, except he didn't have me by his
However, it was something else that surprised me. It was one thing for Scott to be bothering me, but even Margot came looking for me.She told me that Scott had sent her abroad, and that she had to put in a lot of effort just to come back. She asked me to give Scott back to her, and that he belonged to her.Shrugging, I said nonchalantly, "I'm not the one who's clinging to him, so what's the point in talking to me?"Margot asked me to move houses. She said that that way, Scott wouldn't be able to track me down anymore. However, they were the ones who were in the wrong, so why should I run away? I simply refused. After all, if this went on, it would only affect them, not me.Yet, despite Margot's innocent and harmless looks, she was actually a psycho. After she failed to convince me to move, her hatred toward me festered. One day, when my mother and I went to sell our produce, a car sped toward me.Reacting quickly, my mother saved me. However, the impact sent her flying a grea
Half a month had passed before Scott managed to find me again. My mother and I had brought all the oranges we harvested to the city to sell. On the way back, we found Scott waiting outside the door.He looked much more haggard than before. The moment he saw me, he got emotional and ran toward me, but my mother stopped him.She still remembered that I'd told her about Scott's infidelity. She pointed her sickle at Scott and screamed angrily, "What trouble are you trying to cause this time?""This is a misunderstanding, Linda. I just want to talk to Jennie." Scott stumbled backward, keeping a safe distance from my mother.I didn't want my personal affairs to affect my mother emotionally. After promising her that I'd be home soon, I dragged Scott to a quiet corner."Tell me, what do you want to talk about?" I looked at him expressionlessly. All I wanted was for this conversation to end sooner so that I could go home.Pursing his lips, Scott asked, "Do you really not care about me an
It had been eight days since I returned to my hometown. I'd just finished feeding the chickens and was about to head to the fields to cut the grass. To my surprise, as soon as I opened the door, I saw Scott. He was standing outside, looking fatigued. The moment he saw me, his dull eyes brightened. However, his tone was still as firm as ever."Jennie, you're really getting more and more unreasonable. In what way have I pissed you off so much that you chose to run away from home without saying anything? You even recalled our wedding invitations."He grabbed me, and the basket and sickle that I was holding fell to the floor. They landed right on top of his feet.Yet, like an unfeeling creature, he barely reacted. He just kept staring at me.Frowning, I yanked my hand back. I took a few steps back, putting some distance between us."We're already separated, so of course I had to recall them.""When have I ever said that I wanted to break up? Jennie, if you're going to continue bein
By the time I arrived at my destination, it was already noon the next day. As soon as I got off the train, I spotted my mother from a distance, standing in the crowd. She rushed toward me, saying reproachfully, "Why are you back so soon? Train tickets are not cheap, you know. If Scott knew, he would be upset."However, no matter how fierce she pretended to be, she couldn't hide the emotion and happiness in her voice.Holding her hand, I smiled. "His happiness is not my business anymore because we have broken up. From now on, I'll be keeping you company here. I won't be going anywhere."My mother's expression froze. She stared at me like she wanted to say something. In the end, she couldn't bring herself to voice her confusion. After all, in her eyes, I loved Scott dearly. For him, I would give up anything. I had even willingly endured hardship so that he could start his business. With the wedding coming up, I should be elated. Thus, my sudden separation from Scott was indeed conf
A bad feeling came over Scott, and he took out his phone to call me."I'm sorry. The number you have dialed cannot be reached. Please try again later."An hour had passed since the last time he tried to call me. Even if I had been on the phone with someone, I must be done by now.Right now, it seemed like I had blocked him already.Still in disbelief, he went to the bedroom, only to find that I hadn't even left the potted plant on the balcony behind. He was completely alarmed now. "Where is Jennie? Why did she suddenly vanish?" he thought, distressed. At that moment, someone tagged him in the work group chat. It was his assistant and best friend, Jacob Bynes. "Mr. Lakin, I heard that Jennie has resigned. Don't tell me you're planning to make her a stay-at-home wife."That would be a huge pity. She's excellent at what she does. You would be wasting her talent if you made her stay at home."As they had grown up together, Jacob always spoke to him casually despite being his assi
