*CHRIS*

Work was still bustling with customers needing various things. I was fine with that until I encountered Theodore. That encounter was truly dreadful. He’s such a pain in the ass that I believe he wakes up and devises ways to ruin others’ days. Today, I was unfortunately on his list.

Theodore was an elderly, frail man with bowed legs and a cane. He had white hair on the sides of his head but a bald middle. He wore thick, square glasses that often dangled around his neck on a string instead of resting on his face.

He had a peculiar habit of waving his cane when he was upset, disregarding who was on the receiving end.

I attempted to avoid him by leaving the main area, but unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough.

“Where’s that asshole Chris?” he yelled, causing everyone to look around as if this wasn’t a place of business.

“Chris! Where’s that son of a bitch!” he continued, his voice filled with anger.

I came around the corner and approached him with the intention of calming him down before he lost his temper completely.

“Theodore! What brings you here?” I asked.

“I got my car back, but it made a knocking noise when I drove,” he replied.

“When did it start?” I inquired.

“The very day I left this dump of a shop,” Theodore retorted.

“Come on, man, you don’t have to insult me. Why did you leave without saying anything?” I asked.

“Do you think I’m lying?” Theodore demanded.

“No, I’m just saying it’s odd that you’re saying it happened before leaving the shop, but that was well over two weeks ago, and you’re just now coming back,” I explained.

That was the peculiar thing about Theodore. He always spoke poorly about the shop but continued to be a patron. This made absolutely no sense. He’s been coming here since my dad first opened its doors over 35 years ago. Dad never had any issues with this guy, so part of me thinks he just misses him.

“I never had these issues with your father. When’s the old bastard coming back?” Theodore asked.

“He should be back soon. In the meantime, is there anything I can do for you?” I offered.

“Other than call him to come look at it, hell no!” Theodore exclaimed.

I shook my head, exclaiming, “You’re impossible, old man!”

“You’re terrible at your job,” he retorted.

Turning to Carlos, I instructed him to retrieve Theodore’s keys and maneuver his car around the back. Theodore had certainly resisted before surrendering them, but after being informed that we would lend him a loner car, he finally acquiesced and departed. That man was truly a headache.

The rest of the day proceeded as usual, and I left after closing up shop.

As I got into the car, I immediately began rolling up a blunt. The day had certainly earned this. I sat there for ten minutes, contemplating my next move, before deciding to head home.

Upon arriving, I noticed that Mira was absent. Throughout the entire drive, I had been contemplating all the things I wanted to say to her since she had returned. However, all those thoughts vanished when I saw that she was gone.

Suddenly, I recalled her mentioning that she was at the school. So, I made my way there. Upon arriving, I cautiously drove around the parking lot, hoping to spot her car. There it was, nestled in the corner of the lot, a sleek black Infiniti G37x. That car was as beautiful as she was, perfectly complementing her.

As I approached the door, a tall, muscular figure with dark hair caught my attention. And that cocky ass walk was unmistakable—the same man from the club.

I instantly felt aggravated. We exchanged a few words, and I must admit, he was bold. I didn’t want to create any more trouble at her workplace, so I decided to leave. I didn’t want her to be angry with me, but I couldn’t help but wonder if she had known he would be there and had intentionally not invited me.

I couldn’t simply let this go. I drove home, replaying the events in my mind and contemplating how I would address everything to her.

Unfortunately, she didn’t return that night, so I would have to wait until the next day.

Friday arrived, and it was just another ordinary day at work. However, I couldn’t stop thinking about seeing that man up close. The way he looked, as if he had something over me. I felt a sense of foreboding, as if challenging him would be a grave mistake.

I returned home to find Mira finally home. She had cooked, and the aroma was irresistible. I indulged in a bowl of her delicious meal, watching her with a mix of curiosity and suspicion, as if her every move could reveal her secrets.

Mira was composed and calculated, never turning her head or meeting my gaze until I found a slight crack in her demeanor. All I dared to ask was why I wasn’t invited.

She responded that she couldn’t risk having me there. To which I asked what she was risking. Instead of answering directly, she deflected and walked upstairs. Then, I noticed something alarming—a bright red, quarter-sized hickey on the left side of her neck. It was clear as day.

The pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. Last night, when he had said he wouldn’t leave her alone, the way she had positioned herself downstairs, and the way she had gotten defensive about a seemingly insignificant question—all these things pointed to a hidden truth.

The sight of the hickey made my head spin, and all I could see was red. I followed her upstairs, determined to ask the one question that had been on my mind for months—was she still having sex with him? I wanted her to confess the truth to me. But she didn’t.

My initial anger transformed into blind rage. In that moment, she had played right in my face. I couldn’t get mad at the betrayal because I had done it first. True, but lying while taunting me with this man’s mark on her neck, while still being my girlfriend, was simply too much. It was disrespectful, and I couldn’t take it anymore.

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo

  • Love On Ice   The Silence

*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night

*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “

*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa

  • Love On Ice   Coming Back

*CHRIS* For weeks I’ve been working to escape my own thoughts of Jamira. She really thinks I’m going to just lay down and accept the fact that she wants to leave? She has life all fucked up. The last time we spoke I made sure to let her know this wasn’t over. I intend to show her exactly what I mean. I’d been riding past her school looking for her for a week just to finally call and find out she doesn’t even work there anymore. That made my mission to find her harder, but not impossible. The following week I rode around and when I went to get some gas, I just so happened to catch her bald-headed ass friend Ayana. I made sure she didn’t notice me by sliding a little down in my seat when she exited the car. She was with a medium-built, medium-brown man with dreads and just a few inches taller than her. I wanted to throw my shoe at the back of her head. It took all of ten minutes for them to come out and get in the car. I waited another five minutes before I left. I

  • Love On Ice   Discomfort (Part 2)

*ERIC* Two cars. Three people carrying the same destination. Three completely different silences. As I pulled onto the road toward my parents’ house, I couldn’t shake the feeling that dinner wasn’t going to end the way any of us hoped. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew what I didn’t want. The tension was so thick it felt wrong walking inside someone else’s home like that. I slowly pulled into the driveway, stretching every agonizing minute. Jamira placed her hand on top of mine. I let out a deep breath that I’d been holding the entire ride over. I stopped the car and got out. As I walked over to the passenger side to let Jamira out, my heart started beating fast as my anticipation grew. I forced a smile on my face as I grabbed her hand and led her to the door. This time, we showed ourselves inside. My dad was on the couch watching football while yelling out to my mom, who was in the kitchen finishing up dinner and preparing dessert. “Kitty, your kids
