Ever since my sister and niece moved in, I’ve been constantly on the move. I was never the type to stay still, but I did have the luxury of relaxation when I wanted. Now, it’s just motion in every direction. I was exhausted. On top of that, things have been picking up at the office. There are more meetings, more projects, and my mom breathing down my neck about my personal life. When my dad stepped down from his accounting firm, he handed me the reins to take over. I always wondered why he didn’t offer it to Kacie first, since she was the oldest and had actually shadowed him from the beginning. When I asked, he would always say she wasn’t interested in that kind of stuff and that she’d probably just marry well and wouldn’t want it. I think he just didn’t see her as being capable in some way. Worked out for me, so I couldn’t complain. There was a knock on the door that pulled me away from my work. “Come in.” It was my best friend and partner, Walton. He’d always been there to help run the show when I was away or when things had suddenly come up. He was really good at his job. “You’ve been couped up in this office for days. When are you going to get out and get some air or something?” I laughed at the idea of me being a shut-in. “You see all this work on my desk? I can’t get behind on it.” “That’s what you got employees for, E. They are more than capable of helping take the load.” “Walt, what do you want?” He smirked at the question. “Glad you asked. So, it’s this party—black tie that’s going on tonight, and I thought it’d be nice if you came.” I groaned at this because I knew exactly who sent him to do this. “She put you up to this?” “I have no idea what you’re talking about. You just need to have some fun since you’ve been slammed with work.” For a moment, I considered it, but I shook the idea off quickly. I didn’t want to be bothered with big events like that. It was always full of people who weren’t in the least bit interested in you, just what you did. “Should I tell her no?” That question halted me in my tracks. Curiosity always got the better of me, and he knew that. “Who?” Walt pulled out his phone and showed me a picture of a woman who was absolutely stunning. She had long brown hair, captivating blue eyes that drew you in like sirens do to fishermen, and an undeniable smile. “Are you going to tell me that you don’t want to see her?” I rubbed my hand through my hair, contemplating for a moment before responding, “I mean, she’s attractive, but I think I’ll pass. Why don’t you take one for the team?” He seemed taken aback by my response and looked at me for a moment, as if searching for something. “Alright, what’s going on? You’ve never turned down a beauty like that before, are you sick?” he said, reaching to place a hand on my forehead. We both laughed. “No, I’m fine. Just busy.” I picked up my pen to resume work, but the conversation continued. “Who is she?” “Who’s who, Walt?” “The girl that’s got you turning down other girls you’d normally go for?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I did. I just didn’t want to admit it and tell him he was right. I didn’t want the jokes or the pressure of telling my family and friends that I’m interested in someone. It always became a big spectacle, like we were kids. But Walt was always on to me. It was as if he knew my innermost thoughts. It was actually creepy. “Tell me, playboy.” Just then, my thoughts shifted to Jamira. As if I hadn’t thought about her enough already. I didn’t even know where I stood with her, and it was extremely fresh, so no way was I going to talk about it. So, I did the only thing I thought to throw him off. I lied. “Alright, you got me. I met this cute girl a while back, and we’ve been getting pretty serious over the last few weeks. I think she’s special.” His eyes widened like a schoolgirl. It was hilarious, so I kept going. “Her name is Amanda, and we met at a coffee shop one day. It kind of went from there.” “When were you going to say something?” “When I sent out wedding invitations”, I laughed. Walt thought for a moment. His eyes widened again as if he realized something and became flushed. His face was as red as a cherry. “You dumbass, that’s the plot of that show Tokyo Bridge.” It was, but in my defense, I didn’t expect him to catch on as quickly. We both laughed as he walked out of my office. I guess he had enough. I tried to get back to work, but my mind was stuck on Jamira. It’s been a few days since I’ve dropped Kayla off at school or picked her up. Her mom had told me she was able to adjust her schedule so I wouldn’t be solely responsible for that. Plus, I think she just missed being there for her in the morning. I had remembered texting her last night about making things up to her. I wonder if it’s too soon after. I just want to see her and take up some of her time. Hopefully, I can get her next to me again. I pulled out my phone and texted my sister. Hey.. Hey, loser. What time does Kayla get out of school? 3 p.m., why? Perfect, I’ll be picking her up from school today. Are you sure? Yeah, it’ll give you a chance to fix that rat’s nest on your head. Ha ha, very funny, LITTLE bro. I laughed and put the phone down. Satisfied my plan worked, I got back to work so I could finish as much as I could before it was time to leave. By the time 2:30 hit, most of it was done. Not too shabby, I might add. I grabbed my jacket off the chair and left for the day.*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night
*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “
*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa
*CHRIS* For weeks I’ve been working to escape my own thoughts of Jamira. She really thinks I’m going to just lay down and accept the fact that she wants to leave? She has life all fucked up. The last time we spoke I made sure to let her know this wasn’t over. I intend to show her exactly what I mean. I’d been riding past her school looking for her for a week just to finally call and find out she doesn’t even work there anymore. That made my mission to find her harder, but not impossible. The following week I rode around and when I went to get some gas, I just so happened to catch her bald-headed ass friend Ayana. I made sure she didn’t notice me by sliding a little down in my seat when she exited the car. She was with a medium-built, medium-brown man with dreads and just a few inches taller than her. I wanted to throw my shoe at the back of her head. It took all of ten minutes for them to come out and get in the car. I waited another five minutes before I left. I
*ERIC* Two cars. Three people carrying the same destination. Three completely different silences. As I pulled onto the road toward my parents’ house, I couldn’t shake the feeling that dinner wasn’t going to end the way any of us hoped. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew what I didn’t want. The tension was so thick it felt wrong walking inside someone else’s home like that. I slowly pulled into the driveway, stretching every agonizing minute. Jamira placed her hand on top of mine. I let out a deep breath that I’d been holding the entire ride over. I stopped the car and got out. As I walked over to the passenger side to let Jamira out, my heart started beating fast as my anticipation grew. I forced a smile on my face as I grabbed her hand and led her to the door. This time, we showed ourselves inside. My dad was on the couch watching football while yelling out to my mom, who was in the kitchen finishing up dinner and preparing dessert. “Kitty, your kids
