Kayla’s POV

The darkness swallowed everything.

My breath rasped in my throat, too loud, too fragile. I pressed closer to the wall, my trembling fingers clutching at the torn fabric of the couch.

The phone’s dim glow lay across the floor, casting long, warped shadows that looked like claws reaching for me.

Open your eyes, Kayla. He’s closer than you think.

The words wouldn’t leave my mind.

Damien’s grip on my arm tightened. His warmth should have anchored me, but all it did was remind me that someone else had touched me once, with hands just as steady, a voice just as soft.

What if it was him?

“Stay behind me,” Damien whispered. His tone was calm, but I felt the strain in his body, every muscle wound tight.

Liam’s voice cut through the dark. “Where is he?!” His boots crushed glass as he moved, prowling, his fury a weapon ready to strike. “Come out, bastard!”

But there was no reply. Only the sound of breathing that didn’t belong to any of us.

Close. Too close.

  • Love me again, Dear Ex wife!   Chapter 041

Kayla’s POVThe drive to the safe house stretched on endlessly, a road swallowed by rain and darkness. Each drop that hit the windshield sounded like a warning. The rhythmic drumming on the glass became a voice in my head, whispering one name over and over again. Ethan.I sat in the back seat, watching the trees blur past in gray streaks. My reflection looked pale and fragile, eyes too wide, lips pressed tight. I looked like a ghost trapped between two men who swore they could protect me.Neither had spoken in miles.Liam drove, his hands locked around the steering wheel, every muscle in his jaw tensed. His gaze never wavered from the road, though I could tell his mind wasn’t really there. Damien sat in the passenger seat, silent, scanning every shadow as if he expected Ethan to step out of the rain. The tension between them was suffocating.I shifted slightly, my stomach tightening. The baby hadn’t moved much that day, or maybe I just hadn’t noticed. Fear had drowned everything else

  • Love me again, Dear Ex wife!   Chapter 040

Kayla’s POVThe night refused to end.Hours slipped by, but the memory of his face, his voice, his eyes wouldn’t leave me. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him standing there, that faint smile curving his lips as he vanished into the darkness.Ethan was gone, but the silence he left behind felt worse than his presence.Damien moved through the wrecked apartment like a ghost, cleaning up broken glass, muttering under his breath. His shirt was torn, streaked with blood that wasn’t his. Liam sat near the door, his hand clenched around a cup of untouched coffee, his eyes locked on the window as though Ethan might crawl through it again at any second.I sat curled on the couch, a blanket wrapped around my shoulders, though no amount of warmth could chase the chill from my skin.“He knew everything,” I whispered, my voice hoarse. “The messages, the photos, even the hospital. He was always watching.”Liam’s eyes flicked toward me, softening for the first time in hours. “He won’t get near y

  • Love me again, Dear Ex wife!   Chapter 039

Kayla’s POVI couldn’t move. The room spun, and my breath came in short, broken gasps as the man standing before me smiled—a smile I had seen before. Warm once. Now cruel. My lips trembled. “No…” The word came out a whisper, barely a breath. “You can’t be…”He took a step closer. The broken mask dangled from his fingers like a trophy. His face was calm, disturbingly calm, like this moment had been rehearsed a thousand times in his mind.“Kayla,” he said softly, his tone laced with mock affection. “I told you it would come to this.”My stomach clenched. My knees buckled, but I forced myself to stay upright, one hand pressed protectively over my belly.“Ethan…” The name tore itself from my throat before I could stop it.Damien froze mid-step. Liam’s head snapped toward me, confusion twisting into disbelief.Ethan’s smirk deepened. “Finally,” he murmured. “You remember.”Liam moved first, his voice sharp with fury. “Who the hell are you?”Ethan’s eyes flicked to him, bored, dismissive. “

  • Love me again, Dear Ex wife!   Chapter 037

Kayla’s POVThe nurse’s warning echoed in the silence, heavy and poisonous. Don’t trust anyone. Her body went still again, unconscious, and the words hung between us like smoke, curling, suffocating, impossible to ignore.I clutched my stomach, rocking slightly where I sat against the wall. My heartbeat thundered in my ears. If I couldn’t trust anyone, then who was left? Damien? Liam? Both of them had claimed to protect me, but both carried shadows in their eyes that frightened me just as much as the voice in the dark.Damien crouched beside the nurse, checking her pulse with steady fingers. Relief flickered across his face when he found it. “She’s holding on. We need to get her to a hospital.”“No,” Liam snapped, his voice sharp as a blade. His eyes locked on Damien, then me. “The second we step outside, he’ll follow us. He’ll strike again. Kayla stays here, where I can control who comes near her.”Control. The word sliced through me. He hadn’t even realized what he’d said. He didn’t

  • Love me again, Dear Ex wife!   Chapter 036

Kayla’s POVThe darkness pressed down like a suffocating blanket, thick and endless. My breath came in jagged gasps, my heart pounding so loudly it felt like it could give me away. That voice still rang in my ears, soft, taunting, chilling.“Say it, Kayla. Say my name.”I spun toward the sound, my body trembling uncontrollably. My lips parted, but no words escaped. Every shadow in the room seemed alive, every corner a threat.Damien’s hand brushed mine in the dark, steadying me. “Stay close,” he whispered. His voice was sharp, protective, but I could hear the tremor beneath it.Liam’s tone cut through the blackness, furious and demanding. “Show yourself! Stop hiding like a coward!”Silence answered. And then—footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Inside the apartment.I gasped, clutching Damien’s arm. My body curled protectively around my stomach as if my trembling hands could shield the baby from the monster stalking me.The footsteps stopped. A breath brushed my ear, hot, close, so close I thought
