JACKSON’S POV

I’d been watching her. Not in the way a hunter tracks prey—no, this was softer, quieter. Like the way a mother watches her newborn infant sleeping in their crib.

Karen had been the light in this place. The cure had worked, and with it, hope had seeped back into the pack. But now? Now, something was wrong. Not with the people—with her.

At first, it was just flickers. A smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, like she was painting it on for show. The way her fingers would pause mid-motion, hovering over a patient’s chart as if she’d forgotten what she was doing. The way she’d stare at nothing, lips slightly parted, like she was listening to a voice only she could hear.

And then, today, I saw it—clear as day.

She flinched when I touched her arm. She barely looked me in the eye. That warmth I was starting to count on, the way she relaxed around me—it was gone.

“Karen,” I said, catching her just outside the clinic door. “Are you okay?”

She stiffened, not meeting my gaze. “I’m

KAREN’S POVThe scream tore from my throat before I even realized I was awake. My fingers twisted in the sheets, damp with sweat, my lungs heaving like I’d been running for miles. The dream—his face, his touch—still burned behind my eyelids, seared into me like a brand.Alex.His name slithered through my mind, unwanted, aching.I could still feel him—his breath hot against my lips, his fingers tracing my jaw with a tenderness that made my stomach knot. The dream had been too real. The lake, the moonlight, the way his voice had dropped to a rough whisper—"Karen." Just my name. And for one horrifying second, I had leaned into it. Into him.I gagged, scrambling upright, my skin crawling.No. No, no, no.The room spun. My heartbeat was a wild, erratic drum against my ribs, so loud I could hear it in my skull. I pressed a trembling hand to my chest, as if I could physically claw the feeling out. What the hell is wrong with me?The floor was icy under my bare feet, but it didn’t help. The

KAREN’S POVI was still battling with my feelings when the first wave of my heat crashed into me like a wildfire—sudden and all-consuming. My skin burned, feverish and slick with sweat, every nerve ending alive with a desperate, aching need.My muscles trembled—not from exhaustion, but from the sheer effort of not collapsing, not giving in. No. Not now. Not like this. My nails dug into my palms, the sharp sting of pain a fleeting distraction from the storm inside me. But my wolf was already pacing beneath my skin, restless, wild, her instincts clawing at my control like a caged beast. And Jackson—oh gods, Jackson—was the last person I could face in this state.Yet fate had a cruel sense of humor. That same evening, his parents had invited me to dinner—a gesture of gratitude for healing their sick pack members. The irony was almost laughable. Here I was, barely holding myself together, expected to sit through a meal as if my body wasn’t screaming for release, as if my blood wasn’t molt

My legs trembled—weak, unsteady—as if my bones had turned to liquid. The cold night air should have soothed me, but it only made the heat under my skin burn fiercer, sharper. Every breath came in shallow gasps, my lungs too tight, too raw. My clothes clung to me, damp with sweat, the fabric chafing against my overheated skin. The weight of my own body was too much. Just a little farther.I slipped through the side entrance, praying to the Moon Goddess that no one would see me like this—weak, unraveling, barely holding myself together. I couldn’t face Jackson. Not now. Not when my body ached with need, when my thoughts were thick with the fog of my heat. The memory of his scent—warm cedar and wild earth—flashed through my mind, and I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood.No. Not him. Not yet.I dragged myself toward my doorstep, my fingers scrap

KAREN’S POVThe days after Jackson’s ultimatum blurred together—a haze of restless nights, clenched fists, and the suffocating weight of unspoken words. I kept to myself, locked away in my room like a wounded animal, licking invisible wounds.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him. Jackson. The way his jaw had tightened when I hesitated, the coldness in his gaze when he walked away. And then there was her. That doe-eyed Sarah. She crawled into every space I wasn’t, her laughter too bright, her touches too lingering. I’d catch glimpses of them—her fingers brushing his arm, her lips curving into a smirk when she noticed me watching. She wasn’t just flirting. She was staking a claim. And the worst part? Jackson let her. Maybe to punish me. Maybe because he was done waiting. Either way, it burned.I told myself I didn’t care. That this aching in my chest wasn’t jealousy, wasn’t hurt—just frustration. That fire she used to carry, the one that made her stand tall even when the world tried to break her? Gone. Snuffed out.And Jackson? God, my brother is worse. He’s always been steady—unshakable, like stone. But now? Now, he’s snapping at people for no reason, pacing around like he’s ready to explode. He used to be calm, in control. Now? He’s restless. Unsettled. And I know it’s because of her.I don’t know what’s going on between them, but I know something is. You don’t look at someone the way my brother looks at Karen unless you really care. Karen’s POVBefore I could react, he pulled me into his chest, holding me tightly. For a brief moment, I wanted to resist, to fight him off, but in his arms, I felt safe. I felt the pull toward Alex warring with Jackson’s arms around me. All I could focus on was Jackson’s warmth, his breath against my skin, and the way his presence seemed to surround me, making everything else fade away.He lowered his head, and before I could protest, his lips crashed against mine. It wasn’t soft or gentle; it wasn’t a comforting kiss. It was fierce and desperate, as if he were trying to anchor me to him, to drag me away from whatever spell had been cast over me.I tried to push him away, but my body didn’t listen. My hands clung to his shoulders, pulling him closer, as if I were the one giving in. His tongue swept over my lips, and I opened to him without thinking. JACKSON’S POVThe second Karen walked out, the room felt too small. I couldn’t breathe right. My feet started moving before my brain caught up, pacing like a trapped animal, my boots scraping against the old wood floors. The door hadn’t fully closed—a thin line of light from the hallway cut through the dark.Maybe she’ll come back when she cools off. But it was a dumb thought because she never did. I stood there and watched her storm away, thinking, Maybe she’d turn around, burst back in, and tell me she found another way. That she didn’t have to go back to him.Alex.Just his name lit a fire in my blood. My hands clenched so tight my nails dug into my palms. I could still see the way he looked at her at the border—like she was his to take back. Like he still owned her.Not while I’m breathing. But then, my father. The strongest man I knew. The one who’d led us through every fight without flinching. Now? His hands shook when no one was looking. His voice cracked when Silas’ name came

KAREN’S POVThe house was too quiet—not the comfortable kind of quiet, but the kind that made my ears ring. Like everyone was holding their breath, waiting for something bad to happen. I sat curled up in Jackson’s armchair, a book open in my lap, but I hadn’t read a single word in the last twenty minutes. My fingers kept tracing the edge of the page, restless.Silas.Just thinking his name made my skin crawl. That man—it wasn’t just the way he watched everyone with those sharp, knowing eyes, or how he walked around like he already owned the place. It was the way the air turned cold when he entered a room.I swallowed hard and forced my eyes back to the book. Focus, Karen. You’re safe here. But the thought didn’t help. The pack was strong. Jackson’s family had wrapped me in warmth and protection—Luna Hannah’s kind smiles, Alpha Xavier’s steady presence. But underneath it all, something ugly slithered through the cracks, like the first frost warning of winter. The door creaked open.My

LAILA’S POVDinner used to be warm. Loud. Filled with laughter, teasing, and the occasional scolding when Jackson or Liam tried to sneak an extra dessert before finishing their veggies. But tonight? Tonight, dinner was cold—despite the food being hot.I sat stiffly at the end of the table, picking at my potatoes like they had personally offended me. My eyes flicked around the room, noting the tension in every set of shoulders, the silence that weighed heavier than any words could. And then there was him.Silas.He was seated directly across from me, already on his third helping, eating like he hadn’t had a meal in years—which, to be fair, might not have been too far from the truth. Still, the way he shoveled food into his mouth with so little shame made my stomach turn."Mmm!" he said between bites, slapping the table like this was the best restaurant in town. “Now this is what I missed! A good home-cooked meal. Not that processed crap they serve in exile.”No one responded.Jackson k

XAVIER’S POVThe study door closed behind me with a quiet click, but nothing could quiet the storm raging inside my head. My heart pounded so hard I could feel it in my throat, each beat screaming one name: Silas. After twenty years of nightmares, after decades praying to forget him—he was back. And this time, he was staying.I ran a shaky hand through my hair, gripping it tight. My study usually calmed me—the smell of old books and leather—but now the air felt too thick to breathe. My heart pounded inside me, restless and angry. The fire crackled like it sensed danger too. Then I heard the door open softly.Hannah.She stood there in her robe, gripping it so tight her knuckles were white. Her face was pale, but her eyes… her blue eyes burned with quiet fury."He can't stay, Xavier."No begging. No questions. Just steel in her voice.I braced myself against the desk, my fingers digging into the wood. "I know," I rasped. She stepped closer. Normally, her strawberry scent soothed me. No

His presence was wrong. Not rogue-wrong. Not Alpha-wrong. Something older. His aura curled around the room, heavy and dark, sending a ripple through my wolf.Tall. Lean.
