Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
I finally realized what was happening.

I had died.

Perhaps it was better that way. At the very least, the kids at the orphanage wouldn't be able to make fun of me.

The crowd slowly dispersed.

The police arrived to take pictures and cordon off the scene. They picked up my luggage bag and placed it inside the police car.

Where should I go?

I had no idea, but I was suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to see Mom and Dad again one last time.

A gust of wind blew past, but I didn't feel cold at all. I simply floated along with the wind.

I spotted a familiar car when I drifted toward the crossroad. It was Dad's black, luxury car. It was slowly driving past the scene of the accident.

I desperately chased after the car, phasing through the tightly shut window and sitting next to Freya in the backseat.

It was very warm in the car. The heater was buzzing slightly.

"There's a huge crowd gathered there," Mom said from the front passenger seat. "Did something happen?"

Dad glanced at the rearview mirror. "It looks like an accident. There are ambulances and police cars."

Freya, who was seated next to me, was engrossed with fiddling with a new remote-controlled car. The way the lights flashed on the toy was captivating.

"The amusement park is so fun!" she suddenly exclaimed as she lifted her head, her eyes glimmering. "Can we go again, Mom?"

Mom smiled gently at her and said, "Of course. We can go again next weekend."

"I want to eat cotton candy again!" Freya squealed as she swayed her little legs.

"I'll buy it for you," Dad said, smiling as he looked at her through the rearview mirror. "Did you have fun today?"

"I did!"

The atmosphere in the car was lively and carefree.

Mom would occasionally chuckle to herself as she scrolled through her phone, looking at the photos she took that day. Dad hummed along to the music while Freya continued to fiddle with her new toy.

My heart ached terribly as I looked at the three of them. As expected, nothing changed even when I wasn't around.

"Oh, that's right," Mom suddenly said as if she had just recalled something.

She pulled a box from her bag. "I almost forgot about this."

My eyes lit up.

It was a brand new car model. In fact, it was the same one that Freya had spoiled.

"We had to visit so many shopping malls, but fortunately, we were able to get our hands on the last box," Mom said as she carefully checked the packaging. "It's the same one as Ash's, right?"

Dad glanced at her and said, "It's the same. He's going to love it."

"Seriously, you shouldn't have spoken to Ash like that," Mom berated softly. "He's still a child. It's perfectly reasonable for him to get upset after Freya spoiled his favorite toy."

"I let my anger get the better of me," Dad replied, rubbing his nose. "Fine. I admit that I was wrong."

Mom placed the box back in her bag. "Ash must still be sulking right now. Use the toy to make him feel better later when we're home."

"Got it. You bought the blueberry cake, right?" he asked, his voice softening.

"I did. I got it from Ash's favorite bakery."

Mom turned to look at the backseat. Her gaze turned gentle as she continued, "I got a new hat for him, too. It's got his favorite moon design on it."

Freya lifted the remote-control car and asked, "Did Ash get a new toy too?"

"Of course," Mom replied, smiling. "Everyone gets a new toy."

I suddenly realized what was going on as I looked at the brand new car model, Mom's expectant expression, and the apologetic look in Dad's eyes.

It wasn't that Mom and Dad didn't want me anymore. They returned home late, not because they wanted to force me to leave, but because they had gone to several different shopping malls. They wanted to buy me a brand-new car that was the same model as my old one.

Mom continued smiling even as her tears splattered on the photo frame.I gently hooked my finger around her trembling pinky finger that was suspended in midair."I promise you, Mom. I'll definitely find you again in my next life," I thought to myself.Dad walked over to Mom's side and wrapped an arm around her shoulder."Ash," he said hoarsely. "I'm sorry. I let my anger get the better of me that day. I never wanted to send you back to the orphanage. You'll always be my son."He paused for a moment. It sounded like he was fighting to keep his sobs at bay."If you're willing to forgive me, please return to my side in your next life. I promise to treat you well," he said, averting his gaze after he was done speaking.I watched him remain silent, his shoulders trembling violently.Freya was being carried by our aunt, Claire Walker. Tears were streaming down Mom's face by the time she finished reading the letter. She wailed, "I can't even imagine how anguished Ash must have felt when he was writing this letter for us…"Dad took the letter from Mom and read it. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he closed his eyes, dripping onto the letter and spreading across the paper.Freya had woken up. She stood at the door while dressed in her pajamas. She rubbed her eyes as she asked, "Mom, Dad, why are you crying?"She padded into the room and looked at the tears on Mom's and Dad's faces, confused."Is Ash home?" she asked, her eyes lighting up in anticipation as she looked around. No one answered her.The anticipation in her eyes slowly dimmed, replaced by confusion and uneasiness."Where's Ash? Why isn't he home yet?"Mom kneeled and held Freya's hand. Tears continued to stream down her face as she said, "Freya… Ash has gone somewhere very far away.""Where did he go?" Freya asked, tilting her head. "Did he go ther

"So what if I didn't give birth to you?" Mom asked. "Did I ever deny you even a single meal? Did Dad ever forget to pick you up from school? Did I ever not keep vigil by your side through the night whenever you got sick?"Her tears splattered on the photo frame as she continued, "I never wanted to send you back to the orphanage. Never…"She couldn't speak anymore. She bent down and curled into a ball, looking like a wounded animal.…Mom and Dad returned home when dawn was about to break on the horizon. The car ride home had been silent. No one had said a single word.Mom hugged my luggage bag as if she were cradling a baby. She repeatedly ran her thumb over the faded sticker on the bag as if she was terrified that if she loosened her hold for even a second, the bag would vanish into thin air.Dad kept his eyes fixed on the road as he drove and didn't say a single word. He suddenly stepped on the brake when they passed the crossroads. The car slowed to a stop. The road had bee

Mom suddenly whispered, "Gabriel."Dad hummed in response."Ash had a luggage bag with him. Where do you think he wanted to go?"She slowly turned to look at him. Her eyes were completely hollow, reminiscent of two black holes.Dad opened his mouth, but he couldn't say a single word. He simply tightened his hold on Mom's hand.Just then, someone knocked on the lounge's door.A uniformed police officer stood at the door, carrying my blue luggage bag."Are you Ashton Walker's family?" the officer asked as he placed the bag on the floor and unzipped it. "We found this luggage bag at the scene of the accident. We've checked the items inside, but we need the deceased's family to verify them."He then pulled out each item and placed them on the floor, including a pair of blue pants, the scarf that Mom had knitted for me, an old Rubik's Cube, and a baseball cap with a moon design. The family portrait was also completely undamaged since it had been well-protected by the sweater.Mom's

Dad kept his eyes trained on the passing streetlights as if he could find evidence that he was just trapped in a nightmare from the bizarre, flashing lights. The white lights in the hospital's emergency wing were blindingly bright. The scent of disinfectant permeated the hallway.Dad rushed into the building while Mom lagged behind him, stumbling over her own feet and nearly falling several times.I tried to steady her, but my fingers kept phasing through her arm.A nurse stopped them and asked, "Are you Ashton Walker's family?""Yes. Yes, we are," Dad answered shakily. "Where is he?"The nurse's expression twisted slightly. Pity crossed her face as she said, "Come with me."She led them down the hallway and opened a door. The room was very small. The yellow lights were dim, and the air was cold. There was a bed in the middle of the room with a white cloth covering it.Mom stood rooted to the spot at the door. Her lips trembled violently as she stared at the white cloth, but

Dad's expression stiffened.Noticing that something was amiss, Mom moved closer to him and asked, "What's going on? Who is it?"Dad didn't answer her and simply held his phone. His knuckles had turned white from how hard he was gripping it. His lips trembled as he stared into the distance as if he wasn't looking at anything in particular. The person on the other end of the line was still speaking. The phone slipped from Dad's fingers and clattered onto the floor."Gabriel? Say something!" Mom exclaimed in fear. She grabbed Dad's arm and shook it. "Who's calling you? Did you get news about Ash? Where is he?"Dad slowly turned to look at her.The light from the streetlight streamed in through the window and shone on him, casting half of his face in light and the other half in darkness. The half that was illuminated was deathly pale while it was impossible to make out the expression on the half that was cast in shadow. His lips moved again. His voice was hoarse when he finally sa
