Chapter 8

Jade was surprised to see Zephaniah. In the past, they could hardly see each other in a month, but the number of times she had met him over the past few days seemed to be the highest over the entire course of their marriage. He was even the one who sent her to the hospital, and it felt rather like a dream.

When she heard his question, Jade turned her head away. She did not answer.

Zephaniah sighed, pulled out a chair, and sat beside her. He opened the hot porridge and said in an indisputable tone, “Starting from today, quit smoking. Do you hear that?”

Jade snorted coldly and said out of spite, “Hah! And who do you think you are?”

“Jade, you’re not a child anymore. Stop acting so childish,” Zephaniah said calmly. He blew on the porridge and placed the spoon beside her lips. “I asked them to add some sugar. It’s how you like it, so try some.”

“Take it away! I’m not eating!” Jade twisted her body further away, and her tone was rude.

He seemed to care for her and remember what she liked and did not like to eat. Yet, why did she feel like she was skating on thin ice for their marriage?

Besides, she was not a child anymore! She was not being childish!

When Zephaniah saw how stubborn the girl was, he scowled. He took a spoonful of the porridge with his head lowered, reached out, and forced his lips on hers, making her open her mouth. Then, he pushed the porridge in his mouth into hers.

Zephaniah placed his hands beside Jade’s head, making it seem as if he was holding her delicate body in his arms, but his voice was a little cold. “Jade Redfern, if I find you smoking again, I will punish you, and I have plenty of ways to do so.”

“I-It’s none of your business!” Jade felt a little terrified when she saw the stern look on his face. She did not wish to make any eye contact with him either. So, in a fit of stubbornness, she turned her body to the other side and pulled the blanket over her head. Nevertheless, her heart raced with anxiety.

‘Since I’m not feeling well, is he going to stay?

‘As long as he stays and takes care of me while he acts nicer, I won’t go against him. I promise—’

However, Jade was being too idealistic. A minute had not even passed, and she already heard the rustling sound of a plastic bag being casually gathered up. Zephaniah’s voice traveled into her ears. “I have some matters to settle. Get some rest. I’ll come and pick you up tomorrow morning once I’m free.”

Dejection filled her heart. She wrapped herself even tighter with the blanket.

She could not even compare to his job in his heart?!

When Zephaniah saw that Jade did not respond, he could only stand outside the door and ask, “Do you… need me to help you with anything?”

“No! No!” Jade knew that he was asking about her father. The moment she heard the word “help”, she felt upset and irritated. “I’ll take care of my own problems. Just go!”

‘So childish…’ Zephaniah sighed gently.

Although he did not like the marriage, she was still his wife in name. They had been married for a long time, and she had always been obedient. She never bothered him, so there was no way he could just ignore her completely.

Zephaniah then left the ward. After some thought, he took out his phone from his pocket and made a call, “Please contact Mister Mcdaniel and ask him when he’ll be free. I would like to pay him a visit.”

After waking up in the morning, Jade waited for Zephaniah until eleven in the morning, but he did not turn up.

He had lied to her!
