Five

The next morning, I woke up to an empty bed as usual and I wondered how someone who slept so late could wake up as early as my husband Alex did and it was kind of frightening. The only thing that seemed to sit well with me as the fact that though he was a morning person and an early riser, he wasn't grumpy unless he wanted to feign it so he didn't have to talk with me which I had already gotten used to anyways.

I got out of bed immediately and went to the bathroom, turning the faucet on, I scooped water and poured on my face, washing my face and at the same time trying to fully wake myself up.

The bathtub was kind of heated and warm which made me know that he had probably taken his bath and was preparing for work. After washing my face, I walked out hoping to see him in the parlor but he wasn't there either and it made me all the more worried.

This was clearly few minutes to seven am so there was no way he had already gone to work right?

That was when I heard the soundof his car engine roaring to life and I heaved a sigh. He was really going to work by this time of the day? I ran to the garage to see him zooming off without even saying a good morning to me and it dampened my spirit but remembering yesterday, a small smile crept unto my lips.

Though he hadn't outright told me that he loved me but he had said just enough to convince me that he loved me regardless and I knew that the only thread left for him to affirm his words to me was because he still felt obliged to his dead lover.

Some women in my situation tended to get jealous but for some unfathomable reason that even I couldn't discern, I understood him to some extent.

I just waved to his car disappearing through the gate and he honked twice acknowledging that he had seen me.

I should probably learn to wake up more early so I can prepare breakfast for him before he leaves because that's exactly what a good wife would do.

Walking back into the parlor, I was about going into the kitchen when I caught sight of his briefcase laying on the top of his table and that was exactly the same briefcase he took to work with him everyday. He had probably forgotten it and it is humane for me to take it to his office now that I've seen it.

He might need it. Opening the briefcase out of curiosity to stare at the contents, I realized that it was some documents that he might need as he is signing some contract with the company mentioned on a few of the file.

Resolving that I better not waste any more time, I ran to the bedroom and had a quick short, putting on a more presentable outfit, I headed to the garage and swiftly grabbed my car keys.

Stepping on the gas, I zoomed off as the gate was open in the direction to his office.

This would be the first time I was rushing off to his office and his workers probably didnt know me but this briefcase needed to be in his hand if he would sign that deal.

Getting to his company, I drove in after the check at the gate and grabbing the briefcase, I rushed inside.

“Sorry, please do you know the office of the CEO?” I hurriedly asked one of the workers who was with some files in her hands as she also seemed in a hurry.

“If you're not here on appointment, you might want to check in with his secretary.” She answered, gawking her head in the direction of the secretary and I nodded gratefully.

“Hello, please where's the direction to the CEO’s office?” I questioned and she stood to take one cursory glance at me.

“Oh God damn it! Are you one of the ladies that wants to press their pregnancy on the CEO because I'm not about to let that happen.” She sneered in a malicious tone and for a moment, my eyes rested on her outfit which as seductive and all revealing and a pang of jealousy tugged on my heat considering the fact that as his secretary she would be the closest to him.

“No, that's not it. I just want—” I was saying before she abruptly cut me off with her malicious voice.

“Just get lost. The CEO wouldn't see a low life like you.” She said pouring the remains of her coffee on me Andi felt the whole world pause for a moment.

This were the kind of ladies that I was ever prepared for but getting this briefcase into the hands of my husband was top priority now and just then, I heard one of the workers passing by saying to another;

“Take this file to the boss. He's at the sixth floor, second hall.” The lady said handing the files over and I immediately spun away.

Getting to the elevator, it was filled up already and I didnt have patience enough to wait so I took the stairs.

It seemed like his stupid secretary had sent the security after me but that was too be because I was running as fast as my legs could carry me.

I got to a point where my knees and ankles were but the thought that he might miss his deal kept me going.

Finally at the sixth floor, I passed the first hall and got to the second floor when the security caught up with me.

“Stop that lady.” One of them shouted orders to the guards at the door of the second floor and they wedged the door, blocking me as they dragged me back.

Just then, I heard the voice of someone from inside the room say;

“How could you have forgotten the file?” And that made me use up any ounce of strength in me as I wiggled out of their grasp and pushed the door to the hall open.

“The file is right here.”
