"Marlene," I said, knocking at her bedroom door. “Open the door, baby.” I could hear the muffled sound of Marlene's sobs from behind the closed door, making my heart ache. “I know you are sad... But won’t you open the door for your mom?" I said, standing by her door, waiting for her response.

Everything was silent; there was no sound from the other side of the door, but after a few minutes, Malene opened the door, wiping the tears from her eyes.

“Can I come in then?" I asked her, and she nodded her head in response. I stepped into her room, taking in the sight of her tear-stained face and disheveled surroundings.

We sat quietly on her bed while Liam busied himself on his phone. He always does when he tries to ignore a conversation; it's his way of conveying his feelings, acting as if nothing happened.

I reached out and gently placed my hand on Malene's shoulder, offering her a comforting presence.
