Chapter 3

Author: CreamPuff_Mildsweet
Jeremy covered his nose, yelling that he'd get someone to take me out.

I didn't back down. "Go ahead if you've got the guts. I'll make sure everyone knows you're a shameless side piece!"

Jeremy froze on the spot and just watched me walk away.

I thought this meant things between Priscilla and me were over for good, but the next day, she called me.

"Gideon, what's wrong with you? Why didn't you transfer my living expenses this month?"

I was speechless.

"Whatever. I'm not gonna argue with you. Just transfer me 10,000 dollars first. It's my birthday this month, and I want to treat my roommates to dinner."

Had she lost her memory, or did she think I had?

I hung up on her without the slightest hesitation. She called again, and I declined the call. After a few rounds of this, I blocked her number.

Not long after, a new number came through. I picked up, and Priscilla's enraged voice blasted in my ear.

"You've really grown a pair, haven't you, Gideon? How dare you hang up on me!"

"What do you want? Spit it out, or I'm hanging up ag—"

"Wait!" she screeched.

Her tone remained haughty as she said, "Look, whatever. I won't ask for 10,000 dollars this month. Just give me 5,000 dollars for—"

I hung up again without a word.

That afternoon, I was out in the fields turning the soil when one of my classmates ran over, waggling his brows and saying a hot girl was looking for me.

I walked over and saw Priscilla. She was gingerly standing at the edge of the field, one hand hooked around a small designer bag, and the other clamped over her nose as if something reeked.

When she saw me come over, her brows drew together in annoyance. "Why did you hang up on me? If you hadn't done that, would I have had to come all the way out here to look for you?"

Looking at how disgusted she acted, one would think she'd forgotten that we were both kids from the countryside. Hadn't we all worked the harvest back in the day? Now that she was all polished and put together, she actually looked down on a bit of dirt.

She must have snuck out here, because the second she saw her roommates walking by, she immediately covered her face. She hadn't expected them to notice anyway.

They spotted her and stared in surprise. "Priscilla, what are you doing out here?"

Then, they noticed me. They instantly formed a protective circle around Priscilla like mother hens with a chick.

"Is he harassing you? Don't be scared. We'll report him to his advisor."

I met Priscilla's diffident gaze and deliberately asked, "Was I the one who asked you to come here?"

She faltered, tongue-tied, but in everyone else's eyes, it just looked like I was putting her on the spot.

One of her roommates said angrily, "Don't be scared of him. I already texted Jeremy. He's on his way."

This time, Priscilla truly panicked. She stammered, "N-No, that's not necessary."

"Relax. Jeremy's got connections with the university. He'll definitely make them expel Gideon so he'll never get the chance to harass you again."

"Gideon wasn't harassing me. Let's just go," Priscilla muttered.

She wanted to leave, but I wasn't going to let her. I stepped in front of them, blocking their way. "Priscilla, didn't you come here to get money from me? Have you changed your mind?"

"What? He owes you money? Priscilla, don't be afraid. You have to make him pay you back!"

Priscilla couldn't back out, but she couldn't push me, either. She could only force herself to put on a calm front. "Gideon, forget it. Just pay me back what you owe, and I won't hold this against you."

She'd told that lie so many times that she actually believed it herself now. But the truth was, I'd been throwing money at her since elementary school.

The year her parents divorced, neither of them had wanted her. I'd kneeled the whole day and taken a beating so bad I was bedridden for three days before Mom relented and agreed to let Priscilla live with us so she wouldn't starve to death.

As Mom dabbed ointment on my bruises, she had asked if it was worth it.

My ass had been on fire, but I'd felt sweet on the inside. "Of course it's worth it. Priscilla's going to be my wife in the future. It's only right for a man to protect his wife."

Later, Priscilla ended up living with her mother, who had no income. I'd skipped breakfast and saved every cent so I could buy her food instead.

Yet the girl I'd once protected with everything I had was now demanding that I pay her back like it was only natural.

While we were at a stalemate, a flashy sports car screeched to a halt in front of us. Jeremy climbed out with all the swagger in the world and lifted his chin slightly. He said, "I heard someone's been bullying my woman."

"Let go of me! Who are you people?" Priscilla cried. She'd been struggling at first, but the moment she saw me, tears spilled down her face. "Gideon, save me…"On Mr. Stark's signal, the men dumped Priscilla at my feet.He said smoothly, "She messed up before, but don't worry—I've already had her undergo hymenoplasty. I know you'll still mind, Gideon, but to ease your mind, I've prepared another small gift."A few more men in black walked in from the doorway, each carrying a suitcase. They opened them to reveal one case full of gold. The other was also stacked with gold bars.Mr. Stark said, "I hope you'll accept them."I looked at Priscilla, who lay on the floor like an object that had been patched up, then at the two suitcases full of gold in front of me. An inexplicable wave of disgust surged in me."Gideon, I know I messed up. I swear I do. Please, save me…" Priscilla pleaded.I soothed her, then turned to Mr. Stark. "Can I make a phone call before I decide?"He raised a

Germaine ran over at that critical moment. "Stop!"Jeremy, who'd been a little scared earlier, relaxed the moment he saw she was alone. He grinned and swaggered forward. "Gorgeous, I'd advise you not to stick your nose where it doesn't belong, or else…""Or else what?" Germaine wasn't scared at all. She even walked right up to him."Or else I'll—Ah! My eyes!"Before Jeremy could finish his threat, Germaine whipped out a flashlight. The moment she flipped the switch, the pitch-black night lit up like daytime. She let out a cold laugh. "This is the flashlight my grandma uses when she's out walking at night. It's bright enough to blind you."The flashlight really was blindingly bright. It quickly drew the security guards' attention. While Jeremy was still clutching his eyes, a guard already had him pinned to the ground. He roared, "Let me go! Do you have any idea who my dad is? How dare you seize me? I'll have him fire every last one of you!"Germaine smiled like a sly little fox.

I thought Priscilla had spotted me, but her eyes were empty and unfocused. In the end, I still saved her, but I didn't do it myself. I called the police and contacted the security guards nearby instead. We were basically strangers now, and I didn't want to get involved in her matters anymore.…The whole "going to the moon" thing was still classified, but I was spending more and more time in the lab and out in the fields.A few months flashed by. One day, as Germaine and I walked out of the lab together, I saw Priscilla standing not far away. She was in a white dress and had her head lowered, seemingly lost in thought. When she saw me come out, she bounced toward me like she wanted to throw herself into my arms. But the moment she noticed Germaine, she stopped short. She pointed at Germaine, who was shoulder to shoulder with me. Jealousy was written all over her face as she asked, "Who is she?"I merely shot her a look and tried to sidestep her.I didn't expect her to grab my

After I threatened Priscilla, she really didn't come looking for me for a long time. That lasted until I got the notice that I'd made it into the finals of an artificial intelligence competition I'd participated in three months ago."Gideon, even a student of the arts did better than you. A violin major made it to the AI finals, but you got eliminated?"My roommate's reminder made me realize that, back when we signed up, I'd made Priscilla the team leader for the competition so that she could earn extra credit. I hadn't expected her to replace my name with Jeremy's and try to steal credit for my hard work.I immediately went to confront her.But before I even saw her, her roommates started with the snide comments."Some people are circling Priscilla like vultures again after seeing her get into the finals. They should go look in a mirror before they open their mouths.""Loser!""They heard that the winners of the AI finals might have a chance to go to the moon, so now they're sh

Priscilla's face went pale, then flushed red. She tried to brush it all off as a misunderstanding to get Jeremy to leave. After all, she knew very well that if her real background was exposed in front of him, everyone would find out that the so-called campus belle was nothing but a fraud. But Jeremy shook off Priscilla's hand and strode over to me. "I let you off last night, yet here you are, still having the nerve to harass my woman."I glanced at Priscilla, who looked anxious. "Are you sure she's your woman?""Of course.""Perfect. I'm the one who bought all the clothes she's wearing and that bag she's carrying. Why don't you pay me back for them?""Gideon Locke!" Priscilla shrieked and rushed up to me, looking furious and flustered. But I refused to back down. Seeing that, she had no choice but to try to tug Jeremy away."Don't listen to him," she said. "We went to the same elementary school. He confessed to me, I turned him down, and now he keeps talking nonsense. Let's just
