Sophie’s POV

The darkness swallowed me completely.

For a moment, there was nothing, no sound, no feeling, just cold emptiness pressing against my mind. And this was what terrified me the most.

Then Lucas’s heartbeat drummed against my chest, faint but steady, pulling me back. I gasped awake on the cavern floor. I was lying on rocks that were rocks digging into my back, and whatever golden-red sparks were left flickered weakly around us.

“Damon!” I cried, my voice had gone as hoarse as any

Sophie’s POVThe more deeper we moved into the tunnels the more colder and darker than anything I had ever known. Our footsteps were the only noise here and they sounded against the damp stone walls as we fled further underground. Those noises of those things after us seemed to die down slowly, but it never did disappear completely. “Keep moving,” Damon said from beside me. He supported my weight with one arm while looking from left to right. Blood still seeped through the bandages on his side, but he refused to slow down. “The old mining chamber is just ahead. Elowen says it has natural wards that might buy us time.”I nodded, my legs burning with every step. “Lucas is so quiet. He hasn’t made a sound since we entered the tunnels. What if the corruption is affecting him too?”Damon’s eyes flicked to our son. “He’s strong. Like his mother. We’ll fix the bond. We have to.”Elowen led the way with a small group of her hybrids, their violet energy casting faint light along the walls. Ma

Sophie’s POV The tunnels went on forever, cold and narrow, the only light coming from the emergency bulbs and the faint golden glow still stuck to Lucas’s skin. I walked in silence beside Damon, feeling the pain in my body with ever step. The temporary severing of the family bond felt like a piece of me had been cut away. I couldn’t feel Damon’s emotions anymore. I couldn’t sense Lucas’s little sparks of power the way I used to. It felt wrong and mpty. Lucas fussed quietly in my arms, his small hands holding my shirt. He kept looking up at me with those silver eyes, as if asking why everything felt different. “I know, baby,” I whispered, kissing the top of his head. “Mommy feels it too. But we’re going to fix this. I promise.” Damon walked on my other side, supporting me when my legs shook so much that he noticed. His face was grim, but I could see the weariness in the lines around his eyes and the way his shoulders slumped slightly. Blood still leaked through the makeshift ban

I was lying on rocks that were rocks digging into my back, and whatever golden-red sparks were left flickered weakly around us. “Damon!” I cried, my voice had gone as hoarse as anything. He lay a few feet away, unconscious, right in his own pool of blood. The Devourer’s shadow form was still above us, its many eyes reflecting it's obvious triumph. The protective runes on the cavern walls were broken completely. I crawled to Damon, shaking him desperately. “Wake up. Please wake up.” His eyelids fluttered. Silver eyes met mine, filled with pain. “Sophie.. Lucas..” “He’s okay,” I whispered, helping him sit up. “But we can't stay here. We can't be here. We have to move,

Sophie’s POVThe heavy metal door to the escape tunnel made a lot of noise and that was because of the pressure that was coming at it from the other side. I could hear the Devourer’s forces ramming against it from the other side. They were scraping with their claws, and they were writhing, with that terrible ancient voice echoing through the metal. The problem here was that we were all exhausted and they didn't even look like they had started with us at all. It was like we were wasting our time trying to fight them off and protect what was coming. Maybe we couldn't even beat these guys and all that we could do was to just delay the inevitable, was that the case?“Keep moving!” Damon shouted, his voice was raw already. He had his shoulder against the door, muscles straining as he tried to buy us more time. Blood ran down his arms from fresh wounds, but he refused to let go.I held Lucas tight and ran deeper into the tunnel. At this point, my golden energy was still around us, but it w

Sophie’s POVThe doors of the mansion buckled under the assault coming from the other side. And it didn't seem like they were ready to give up so soon. I stood in the grand hall with Lucas strapped against my chest. My body was aching from the previous battles, but fear kept me standing on my feet. That single emotion didn't make me think twice at all. I knew that I had to be alive and fighting for what mattered to me. Damon was beside me, covered in blood and breathing like a baby dragon, and his silver eyes never left the shaking entrance.“They’re breaking through,” Marcus shouted from the upper balcony, he was in charge of the last line of defense. “We have maybe minutes!”I looked at Damon. “We can’t let them reach Lucas. Not after everything we’ve survived.”He reached out and squeezed my hand, and his grip was strong despite the wounds covering his body. “We won’t. You take him to the deepest bunker. I’ll hold them as long as I can.”“No,” I said firmly, because I didn't want

Sophie’s POVThe arrival of The Veil bought us some time, but it was only seconds. Elowen and her hybrids unleashed waves of violet energy that clashed with the Devourer’s shadows, creating explosions that lit up the night sky as if it were the fourth of July. I stood still for a moment, Lucas pressed tightly against my chest, watching what was unfolding. Tell you what, I had never seen such a display of raw energy before. The chaos in front of me was both beautiful and scary at the same time. Anyway, we were in serious danger. “Damon, we have to move!” I shouted. He was already beside me, bloody all over and breathing hard. “Stay behind me. We push toward the ridge. The Veil will cover our retreat.”Elowen appeared through the smoke, and her hair was wild. “The Devourer is awakening faster than I feared. Its true form is rising from the deep chasm. We must get the child to the sacred circle on the eastern ridge. It’s the only place where we can contain its power temporarily.”I lo
