I gripped the strap of my duffel bag tighter as the black Escalade drove through the hefty iron gates of the Blackthorn estate. Silverpine Ridge stretched behind us like something out of a book, very tall pines covered in thick mist, the distant lashing of waterfalls somewhere making some noise. The mansion was ahead of us, covered with dark glass and heavy timber, looking more like a fortress than someone's home. âWelcome to your new home, sweetheart,â Victor Blackthorn said from the driverâs seat. He happened to be my motherâs husband of only three months. The man who had appeared right after her funeral and promised me a life of stability, one that I never even asked for. I forced myself to smile when though I wasn't in the mood for that. âThanks... Dad.â The word sound strange on my tongue. Victor chuckled. âYouâll get used to it. Damonâs waiting inside. Heâs been looking forward to meeting you.â I seriously doubted that. From the few photos Iâd seen, my new stepbrother looked like pure trouble. He was tall, dark, and seemed to have an attitude. The heavy front door opened before we even reached it. And there he was. Damon Blackthorn was leaning against the doorframe as if he owned the entire mountain. He was taller than I expected, with broad shoulders forcing curves against a black t-shirt and dark jeans resting low on his hips. Tousled black hair fell over piercing silver-gray eyes that were fixated on me. His sharp jawline and full lips made my stomach tighten in a way I didnât want to think about too much. I felt heat crawl up my neck. âDamon,â Victor said an hospitable manner. âThis is Sophie.â Damonâs gaze dragged slowly down my body, over my simple white sweater, the way my jeans hugged my hips and thighs, then back up to my face. I noticed something dark and hungry in his eyes before his expression turned stolid. âSo youâre the new stepsister,â he said, his voice was low and rough. I thought of gravel. âCute.â The way he said the word 'cute' felt far from innocent. I pushed up my chin, refusing to make it looked like his intimidating gaze was working on me. âAnd youâre the infamous stepbrother. Nice to meet you too.â A smirk appeared at the corner of his mouth. He stepped aside, but barely. When I walked into the house, I had to brush past him, making contact with his chest. The contact sent a sharp electric jolt through me. He smelled like pine, smoke, and something wild that made my heart beat faster that normal. The mansion inside was even more awesome, ceilings like the kind you see in cathedrals, there's a massive stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows that faced the endless dark forest. Victor gave me a quick tour, showing me the sleek kitchen, the game room, and finally my bedroom on the second floor. It was beautiful. A huge king-sized bed with soft gray linens, a private balcony facing the trees, and an attached bathroom bigger than my old apartment back home. âIâll let you settle in,â Victor said with a kind smile. âDinner at eight. Damon can show you around if you need anything.â I nodded, relieved when he finally left. I dropped my bag and sank onto the bed, and let out a deep sigh. This was supposed to be a fresh start. Instead, it felt like Iâd stepped straight into the wolfâs den. Especially with him. I slowly unpacked my stuff, trying not to think about the way Damon had looked at me earlier, like he wanted to devour me and push me away at the same damn time. Night fell quickly in the mountains. I stood on my balcony, taking in the crisp night air, and that's when I heard it. It was low, howl that echoed through the trees. Sounded haunting and it make my skin prickle. That's the correct way to put it right? Worse, the howl sounded like it wasn't too far. A soft knock on my door made me jump. âCome in.â Damon stepped inside without even asking for permission. He was in the doorway, arms crossed over that powerful chest. His silver-gray eyes looked everywhere in my room before landing on me. âDad wants you downstairs.â He said to me. âMake sure you change as well. That sweaterâs too thin for dinner.â I looked at what I was wearing. The soft white material hugged my breasts like a second skin, the chilly air was making my nipples faintly visible through the material. I crossed my arms. âIâm fine.â He didn't seem to like my response. âSuit yourself. But if you walk around dressed like that, donât be surprised when people stare.â âPeople?â I raised an eyebrow. âOr just you?â Something dangerous flashed across his face. He took one step closer, then stopped himself. I could feel air in my room grow thick and heavy. My heart was banging against my ribs already. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. Damonâs eyes fell to my lips for a second. âCareful, little sister.â âIâm not your sister,â I shot back at him. âNo,â he murmured. âYouâre definitely not.â He turned and left before I could say anything else. And how did he leave me? Completely flushed lushed and aching for something I wasn't sure about. Totally strange of me. Dinner was something else. Victor kept talking about business while Damon sat directly across from me. Every time I looked up, his eyes were already on me, watching, studying. Like a hawk or vulture, I wasn't sure which one. When I reached for the water, his fingers brushed mine. The spark was something I had never felt before and I pulled my hand back quickly. Later that night, after taking a long hot shower, I couldnât bring myself to sleep. The howling had started again, and this time it was even closer. So I got up, slipped on a short silk robe over my tiny sleep shorts and tank top and stepped out onto the balcony. The moon was full in the sky and the silver rays were collected by the forest as if it was hungry for it. That was when I saw it. A massive black wolf emerged from the tree line, bigger than any animal Iâd ever seen. Its obsidian fur shone under the moon like something polished, powerful muscles rippling with every step. It lifted its head and looked straight in my direction. Silver eyes. I froze, heart beating against my chest. The wolf stared at me for a long, intense moment, then turned and vanished behind the trees. My hands were shaking as I held the railing tight. That could not have been real! Wolves of that size didnât exist, and those eyes looked exactly like Damonâs. I quickly walked back into my room and closed the door to the balcony. My heart was already beating hard and I was trying to calm it. Just as I turned toward my bed, my bedroom door opened and there he was again. Damon stood there, wearing only gray sweatpants. He was shirtless. His abs was looked like muscle that has been sulpted. He had scars that ran across his midsection and shoulders. Plus, there was a fresh fresh scratch mark running down his left side. âSophie,â he said, his voice was rough and it sounded very dangerous. âWe need to talk. Now.â He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. I suddenly became very much aware of how little I was wearing. My silk robe had slipped open slightly, revealing the swell of my breasts and the curve of my thighs. The way his eyes ran slowly over my body. Christ. I wasn't surprised that he made fists with his hands. âWhat the hell is going on?â I whispered. âI just saw...â He moved faster than I could notice. In two strides he was right in front of me, towering over me, the heat pouring off his skin. One large hand came up, as if he wanted to touch my face but he didn't. âYou shouldnât be here,â he growled. âYou shouldnât be anywhere near me.â âThen why are you in my room?â I demanded. Even as I said this, I could feel liquid pooling between my legs. Shit, my basement had flooded. I could see the hunger in his eyes. He leaned down, towards me, and his lips brushed my outer ear. âBecause I canât fucking stay away from you.â His breath was hot on me and I had a feeling that it was part of what was sending shivers down my spine. My knees were already beginning to feel weak. Just as his fingers finally touched my waist, pulling me closer, a sharp knock sounded on the door. âDamon?â Victorâs voice called from the hallway. âIs everything alright in there?â Damon cursed, his grip tightening on my hip for one dangerous second. Like he owned me. My heart pounded as I stared up at my stepbrother, terrified, confused, and aching with a need I didnât even understand. What the hell had I just gotten myself into?Sophieâs POVThe world went black, then it all came rushing back to me like a dam, snapping right back with a lot of brutality behind it. I woke on the cold stone of the altar, my body aching as if every bone had been broken then reassembled again. Lucas was still strapped to my chest, his breathing shallow but steady. The family bond was weak between us, a bit damaged, but not broken. As if it was some machine. âDamon?â I croaked, pushing myself up.He lay a few feet away, blood pooling beneath him, his black wolf form slowly shifting back to human as if it had finally lost its strength to be anything by human. I crawled to him, and shook his shoulder. âDamon, wake up. Please.âHis silver eyes opened, and I didn't need a picture with a bright eyes and a pen light to tell me they were filled with pain. âSophie.. Lucas?ââHeâs okay. Weâre all okay. For now.âThe sacred ridge looked like someone had thrown a grenade launcher there. Craters smoked where the Devourerâs power had struck.
Sophieâs POVThe Convergence began at midnight, and it coincided with something that Thorne had warned earlier. Wasn't surprised he seemed to know exactly when they would begin. The sky above the mountains split open with unnatural light, streaks of silver and black tearing through the stars like cracks. I stood on the highest balcony of the mansion with Damon on one side and Lucas in my arms. Our son stared at the sky with wide silver eyes, his small hands glowing as if answering the call.âItâs starting,â I whispered, fear and awe colliding in my chest. âHe feels it.ââSeems to me like there's no more waiting," Damon said to me. Marcus burst onto the balcony, breathing hard as if he had been running a marathon. âAlpha, the old bloodlines are converging at the sacred ridge. The Forgotten, The Eternal Watch, and The Silent Veil, theyâve all arrived. And something else is coming from the deep chasms. The Devourer is rising again, stronger than before.ââStars are angry, Mommy," Luca
Sophieâs POVThe sacred ridge was humming with ancient energy as we stood at the center of the protective circle Elowen had prepared. Two months had passed since the last major attack, allowing a spell of peace, but one could still sense the warning in the air. Lucas, now ten months old and walking with confident little steps, held my hand tightly. His silver eyes scanned the horizon with some seriousness right thew. âBad things coming again?â he asked in his clear, small voice, squeezing my fingers. He always seemed to ask that of late. And it wasn't a fluke that he was also feeling something coming. And was it a coincidence that he had already labelled it as 'bad things'?I knelt down and brushed a dark curl from his forehead. âMaybe, sweetheart. But Mommy and Daddy are right here. We wonât let anything hurt you.âDamon stood on his other side, one large hand resting on our sonâs shoulder. âThatâs right, little Alpha. You know ee protect our own.âThorne and Elowen were watching fr
Sophieâs POVThe training grounds with buzzing energy the next morning. Lucas sat in the center of the protective circle, his small hands raised as he tried to make a ball of golden-red light float. At eight months, he already understood more than any child should. His eyes seemed focused on what he was doing. And I was proud of it all. Regardless of the dangers that were coming anyway. âEasy, sweetheart,â I said softly, kneeling outside the circle. âDonât force it. Let it flow like the river Elowen showed you.âThe orb bounced around a bit, then stabilized. Lucas clapped his hands, sending the light spinning in a perfect circle. âMommy, see? I did it!ââThatâs my boy," Damon said. "Strong and smart.âElowen watched with careful eyes. âHeâs progressing faster than any recorded case. The Spark inside him is awakening naturally but with the Convergence only two months away, we must accelerate the shielding training. He needs to learn how to hide his signature completely.âI didnât like
Sophieâs POVThe more deeper we moved into the tunnels the more colder and darker than anything I had ever known. Our footsteps were the only noise here and they sounded against the damp stone walls as we fled further underground. Those noises of those things after us seemed to die down slowly, but
Sophieâs POV The darkness swallowed me completely. For a moment, there was nothing, no sound, no feeling, just cold emptiness pressing against my mind. And this was what terrified me the most. Then Lucasâs heartbeat drummed against my chest, faint but steady, pulling me back. I gasped awake on
Sophieâs POVThe heavy metal door to the escape tunnel made a lot of noise and that was because of the pressure that was coming at it from the other side. I could hear the Devourerâs forces ramming against it from the other side. They were scraping with their claws, and they were writhing, with tha
Sophieâs POVThe doors of the mansion buckled under the assault coming from the other side. And it didn't seem like they were ready to give up so soon. I stood in the grand hall with Lucas strapped against my chest. My body was aching from the previous battles, but fear kept me standing on my feet.
