Eliam’s question hung between them through the phone. “What’s his name?” His voice was calm, but Avaline had known him long enough to hear the jealousy underneath it, and the realization made a smile pull at the corner of her mouth.

“His name is Daniel,” she said, deliberately keeping her voice casual. “He’s one of the teachers at the school.” There was a pause.

“How old is he?”

Avaline laughed. “Why are you asking me that?”

“I’m asking a question.”

“You’re interrogating me.”

“I’m not.”

THE LIFE SHE WAS BUILDINGThe first week of Avaline’s new life in Boston passed faster than she expected. Her mornings began before sunrise, her days filled with lesson plans, family meetings and children who seemed determined to test every idea she had prepared, and by the end of each afternoon, she was usually too tired to notice how quickly she had stopped feeling like a visitor. Her classroom had become hers. The teachers knew her. Parents had begun asking for her by name, and the Family Learning program was already becoming larger than the small pilot she had originally been hired to lead. For the first time in years, Avaline was not simply trying to escape the person she had once been. She was actively becoming someone new.Daniel became part of that process naturally. • MARRIED TO MY MOTHER’S KILLER    CHAPTER 4

Eliam’s expression remained fixed on Avaline long after he had spoken Daniel’s name, and although Avaline could have teased him, she knew him well enough to understand that this was not the moment for jokes. He was trying to make sense of a feeling he had never needed to confront before, because jealousy had always seemed like something that belonged to insecure men, not to a man who had spent most of his life believing that confidence and control could solve almost anything. Yet Daniel had done nothing wrong, Avaline had given him no reason to doubt her, and still something inside Eliam had shifted the moment he realized another man would be spending his days beside his wife in Boston.Avaline stepped closer and placed her hands against his chest, feeling the tension beneath his shirt. She knew what he was afraid of, even if he had not said it. Boston had already given her a career, new responsibilities and a part of herself she had almost forgotten existed, and now another man would

  • MARRIED TO MY MOTHER’S KILLER    CHAPTER 3

Avaline was still staring at the final name on the registration list when Principal Lawson explained why Gabriella Blackwood had been included. The Family Learning program was designed around parents and children participating together, and after hearing about Avaline’s new role, Eliam had registered Gabriella himself because he wanted their daughter to experience the part of Boston that was becoming important to her mother. Avaline turned toward him with a mixture of surprise and affection, realizing that he had not registered Gabriella because he expected her to remain in Boston or because he was trying to interfere with Avaline’s work. He had simply wanted their daughter included, and the thought made something warm settle inside her. For so long, she had been afraid that building a life in Boston would mean creating a life away from her family, but Eliam was quietly showing her that the two did not have to be separated.Gabriella was delighted to be included and quickly became the

Avaline spent Sunday trying not to think about Monday, but the board meeting remained at the back of her mind. Principal Lawson had explained that it was part of the approval process for senior teaching appointments, yet something about being asked to attend alone had made Avaline curious enough to want answers before she walked into the room. She refused to turn a professional meeting into another mystery, especially after everything she and Eliam had already survived, but she also knew better than to ignore a feeling simply because she wanted Boston to be uncomplicated. On Monday morning, she arrived early, met the teachers she would be working with and spent nearly an hour arranging the books in her new classroom. By noon, the room already looked less like an empty space and more like somewhere she belonged. When Principal Lawson appeared at her door and said, “They’re ready for you,” Avaline took one slow breath, picked up her folder and followed her down the hallway. At the board

  • MARRIED TO MY MOTHER’S KILLER    THE BLACKWOOD FAMILY

Avaline had expected Boston to feel unfamiliar. Instead, the moment she stepped out of the car in front of the school, something inside her settled. The building was smaller than her New York school, with wide windows, bright classrooms and a playground filled with children, and as she stood there listening to their laughter drifting through the morning air, she realized this was the first time she had looked at her future without immediately searching for something that could go wrong.Eliam came to stand beside her, his hand finding hers naturally. “You’re doing that thing again.”“What thing?” “Thinking so hard that you forget I’m standing beside you.”She glanced at him and smiled. “I’m imagining myself working here.” “I know.” “How?” “Because you’re smiling.” Before she could answer, Gabriella appeared beside them, clutching Rabbit beneath one arm. “Can we go inside now? I want to see Mommy’s classroom.”The principal welcomed them and led Avaline through the school, explaining t
