Desperate Plans

The old temple was just wrecked. Like, you could smell the dust and old prayers that had never been answered. Moonlight spilled through busted windows, making these weird, shattered shadows across the stone floor. Lyra and Marcus sat huddled in that mess, papers all over, candles flickering like they were scared of the dark, too.

Marcus jabbed a finger at the map, tracing some wild idea along the east border. “Three days if we ride like we mean it. Hit the coast, grab a ship to the Free Cities. The narrow sea’s nothing compared to what’s chasing us.”

Lyra’s voice was barely there. “My father’s not stopping. Not ever.” She swallowed. “And Kael? He’ll torch everything just to spite us. Just to make us crawl back.”

Marcus, dead serious, said, “Then we leave him nothing to burn.” He flipped another map over, this one a ridiculous, detailed sketch of the castle. “We raid the treasury, the armory, grab what we need, and put the rest to the torch.”

Lyra just stared at him, e

Princess Lyra AngerLyra just sat there, frozen on her horse at the edge of Kael’s camp. Hands glued to the reins, knuckles white. Inside? Her heart was a goddamn furnace, like someone poured liquid steel right into her chest. Oh, and the vibes coming off Kael’s soldiers? Yikes. She felt it all, fake loyalty, devotion as phony as a three-crown coin, minds gutted and stitched back together to fit somebody else’s design. Empath perks, right? Sometimes it sucked. But under all that white-hot fury? Yeah, that’s where the real danger lived, crystal-clear, deadly understanding. She slid off the horse quickly and smoothly, that fancy silk dress whispering around her legs, while the nobles started circling the ritual dais like a pack of scavengers sniffing out fresh meat. Lord Harwick was busy fiddling with his ceremonial getup, totally clueless that he was about to star in the most humiliating disaster of his career.“Princess Lyra!” Kael’s voice echoed across the camp, syrupy sweet. Fake.

The Gathering StormJust before dawn, the whole valley buzzed, like you could almost feel it, that weird static when something’s about to blow up. Three groups all creeping in at once, none of them knowing the others are this close. From the east? Marcus’s bunch, tearing through the woods, hooves thudding softly thanks to strips of cloth wrapped around the horses’ legs. North side, you got Princess Lyra and her castle guards, all lined up neat, trying to look intimidating even though she’s got these creepy scars glowing faintly across her skin. And, oh, from the south: the nobles. Bunch of clueless rich folks, swanning in with their fancy carriages, totally out of their depth. Like lambs to the slaughter, honestly.Sir Lucas pulls up at the treeline, fist in the air, everyone freezing. They’re peeking through the branches at Kael’s camp sprawled out below, straight-up nightmare fuel. Torches swirling in freaky patterns around the altar, guards marching around like they’ve been brain

Alpha's EnduranceMarcus dangled between those rough wooden posts, looking like hell warmed over. His skin was a mess, clean slices leaking both blood and some nasty, blackish gunk. That silver collar wasn’t just for show either; it throbbed with this oily evil, the runes on it shifting and twitching, trying to worm their way into his brain, twist him into something Kael could use.But somewhere deep inside, tucked away where Kael’s crap couldn’t reach, Marcus kept this one stubborn ember alive, the mate bond with Lyra. No torture, no matter how brutal, could kill that off.Kael circled him, all predator swagger, iron rod blazing hot in his hand. “Tell me about love, Sir Marcus. What’s it like, knowing when you suffer, she suffers too?”The iron hissed across Marcus’s shoulder, fresh agony tearing through him. But it didn’t stop there. That pain, black and acidic, surged down the bond. Miles away, Lyra screamed and dropped, writhing like she’d taken the hit herself.Kael’s eyes lit up

Council EmergencyElena didn’t bother with knocking; she just barreled into the council chamber, boots still muddy, hair wild from the night ride. She looked like she’d fought a windstorm and barely won. Right on her heels came Gareth and Edmund, both looking like they’d swallowed a hornet, grim, grumpy, and very much awake against their will. The alarm bells had yanked the whole castle out of bed, and now the halls swarmed with half-dressed lords and ladies, all grumbling and clutching at silk robes.King Aldwin was hunched over the war table, candles dripping everywhere, maps in disarray. Guy looked like he hadn’t slept since last winter. His eyes were ringed in black, and his voice sounded like gravel. “Elena. What’s the news?”She didn’t waste time. “Everyone’s RSVP’d, Your Majesty. Every lord, every greasy merchant, every guild bigwig, Kael’s got them all drooling over his so-called ‘royal wedding of the new age.’” She started slapping down parchments, each one stamped with some

Pack MobilizesSir Lucas hung out in the armory, hands rough and scarred, running his thumb along the sword’s edge like he was making sure an old friend hadn’t gone dull on him. The rest of Marcus’s crew? Yeah, they were buzzing, all nerves and that itchy, pre-fight energy nobody wanted to name out loud. Steel flashed, saddles thumped, and not a single soul said what they were all thinking, that maybe they weren’t coming back this time.“Two hours past midnight,” Lucas muttered. Not loud, but somehow everyone caught it. “Northern postern gate.”Athena just gave a sharp nod, sliding knives up his sleeves like he was born with them. “Horses?”“Ready. Tormud’s kid’s out at the mill with ‘em, just past the wall.” Gareth was fussing with his bow, flexing it, squinting down the string like he was daring it to misbehave. “Fast ones. Not for fighting, just for running.”Barrett slung his crossbow over his shoulder, the metal gleaming, freshly oiled. “How many guards Kael got on the prisoner?

Prison PlanningLyra pressed her spine up against the stone, cold as a witch’s heart, hands splayed flat on the pitted wall. She stretched her senses out, trying to feel the pulse of the castle, reaching for any flicker of hope. The heavy oak door—yeah, the one they’d slammed shut after her last stunt, stood between her and the world. At this point, her “rooms” felt about as welcoming as a wolf’s jaws.Six guards out there. She could taste their feelings on the air: a nasty cocktail of obligation and pity, with a sour dash of shame. Nobody liked locking up their princess. Too bad. Outside, the castle was wound tight, nerves everywhere. Servants kept bustling, heads down, pretending not to notice the panic thickening each hour, like a fog that just wouldn't lift.“Mira.” Lyra kept her voice low, barely more than a breath. Her maid sat by the window, doing a half-baked job pretending to mend a gown. She’d stabbed that same patch of cloth so many times it was embroidery by now.Mira glan
