Cassandra had barely stepped into the apartment before she was ambushed.

Nia’s hand latched onto her wrist with the force of a gossip-hungry hurricane. “Give me all the tea!” she demanded. “Every single detail. Don’t you dare hold back!”

Cassandra rolled her eyes, lips twitching in amusement as she slipped off her heels and padded into the living room. “Can I at least sit down first?” she said, already knowing the answer.

Nia was hot on her heels, practically bouncing with anticipation. “Girl, sit, stand, roll across the floor, I don’t care. Just spill.”

Cassandra plopped onto the couch and exhaled deeply, one hand running through her hair as her gaze met Nia’s. There was no point delaying it. “We kissed.”

For a moment, Nia just blinked.

Then her entire face lit up in a wild mix of shock, awe, and unfiltered excitement. “We kissed?” she echoed. “We? As in you and you know who? That we?!”

Cassandra gave her a slow nod, lips pressed into a thin line.

“Darius?” Nia pressed, hands flailin

Her chest tightened. Not from guilt, but from a sudden, burning wave of indignation. He’d read her actions, yes. But he’d misunderstood her intentions entirely.Darius didn’t pause. He didn’t seem to notice her rising discomfort. Or maybe he did, and simply didn’t care.“Name your price,” he said. “It will be paid monthly into your account. But,” he added, voice growing colder now, “as my woman, you will do as I demand. When I demand it.”Cassandra sat frozen. Was this an offer? A deal? Or a leash? Her thoughts spun. This was exactly what she’d planned, get close, seduce him, manipulate her way into his world, but now that she was standing on the edge of that success, it felt like a trap. Cold. Clinical. Transactional. And insulting. Her mouth finally moved, but the words died before they reached her lips.Did he think that low of her?Did he believe she’d sell herself so easily?Yes, she wanted power. Yes, she wanted to control this situation. But she wasn’t for sale. And she certain

He leaned forward again, slowly folding his hands atop the desk, thoughtful. He knew how to read people, especially when they were trying not to be read. Cassandra’s walls weren’t perfect, there were cracks. But if he pushed her too hard, too fast, she might shut down. She might resist giving him anything else. And he needed more.Still, this complicated things. If she had no known ties to her biological parents, if she had completely severed herself from that part of her identity… it would make tracing her past difficult. Almost impossible. He would have to get Rowan to look into it. Have him dig deeper into her surname, see if anyone shared any trace of blood or connection to it. Of course, it might be fake. A name given to hide the truth. A dead end.But Darius wasn’t one to walk away from a puzzle. He tilted his head slightly, his voice quieter this time. “Are you in a relationship?”The question caught Cassandra off guard. Her lips parted slightly, her brows drawing together in s

Cassandra cleared her throat and forced a polite smile. “Morning.”Darius didn’t return the smile. Instead Cassandra continued to speak, “You said you sent an email about a business meeting being held here, but I didn’t get anything.”Darius leaned back in his chair, watching them both closely. His voice was calm, but it carried the weight of something deeper. “Really?” he said, almost to himself. What he didn’t say aloud was that this had gone exactly as he’d intended. He had given Rowan very specific instructions: bring her to the mansion, no matter what. He hadn’t mentioned how, only that it had to happen. And now, here she was. Whatever methods Rowan used had clearly done the trick.Cassandra didn’t hear the storm brewing silently behind Darius’s eyes. She continued, her voice slightly uncertain, “So... who are we meeting with?”Darius’s eyes locked onto hers. He didn’t blink. Didn’t fidget. He simply leaned forward, folding his hands on the desk. “This meeting is just between me

Cassandra nodded slowly, but her fingers tightened slightly around her phone. Of course it would be the mansion. Where else would a man like Darius Thorn hold a meeting that wasn’t listed on any known calendar?Still, something about the casual way Rowan had said it made her pulse skip. She didn’t press him further.Instead, she shifted in her seat and pulled her phone from her coat pocket, fingers moving to open her email. She hadn’t checked her inbox since the previous evening, too busy replaying that damn kiss, wondering if the man who kissed her had been the same one who had, minutes before, stabbed someone’s hand into a table with the calm of someone signing a document. The inbox loaded.Nothing.No new messages from the company. No calendar reminders. No internal memos. Her jaw tightened slightly. She scrolled down, checking her promotions tab, then her spam folder. Still nothing. She was just about to ask Rowan if he was sure an email had been sent when the SUV slowed.Cassandr

The morning sun was soft, spilling golden light over the quiet neighbourhood as birds chirped from telephone wires. The scent of fresh dew clung to the grass, and the air still carried that peculiar hush of dawn not yet broken by the city’s chaos. Cassandra stepped out of her front door, the heels of her boots clacking lightly on the stone pavement. A breeze swept past, tugging gently at her black trench coat.Beside her, Nia adjusted the strap of her shoulder bag, yawning as she shielded her eyes from the sun. She was on her way for a job interview, and she wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. “You know, I still don’t get why this interview must be so early. I haven’t even had my caffeine.”Cassandra barely heard her. Her eyes had caught something….someone.A tall figure leaned casually against the sleek black SUV parked by the curb. The morning light kissed the clean lines of his sharp suit, the tailored jacket straining over muscular arms. He glanced down at his watch, then up, as

“My mate…” he began, voice hoarse, “She died five years ago.”Sela nodded solemnly, her fingers threading through the folds of her skirts.“But today…” Darius’s brow furrowed as he fought to find the words. “Today I felt like—”“You felt another mate,” Sela cut in smoothly, “and this time the bond is stronger.”His eyes snapped up to hers. She smirked slightly. “Don’t look so surprised. You’re not the first Alpha to think the Moon Goddess only granted him one chance. And you won’t be the last to learn that fate doesn’t care for rules or blood oaths.”Darius exhaled slowly. “So I’m not losing my mind.”Sela tilted her head. “Oh, you might be. But not because of the bond.”He gave a low grunt of reluctant amusement, then grew serious again. “This new mate… she’s human.”Sela didn’t flinch.“Is that even possible?” he asked. “To have another mate, and worse… a human one?”Sela’s eyes turned thoughtful, distant. “You know, your father once declared me crazy for claiming that magic still l
