She waited eight years to find the man who destroyed her family. She never expected he'd be her fated mate. When Wren Calloway walks into Blackthorn territory under a false name, she's not looking for love, she's looking for revenge. All she needs is one piece of proof, one mistake, one moment alone with the man responsible for the fire that took everything from her. What she doesn't plan for is the mate bond that slams into place the second she meets Alpha Ronan Blackthorn, in front of his entire pack, on the one night he's being crowned. So she does the only thing that makes sense. She rejects him. Publicly. Instantly. In front of everyone he rules. But Ronan doesn't rage the way a rejected Alpha should. He watches. He waits. And within hours, he's already found the one thread in her past she thought no one could pull. Now Wren is trapped inside the walls of the man she came to destroy, fighting a bond she never wanted, hiding a truth that's unraveling faster than she can control, and running out of time before the Alpha figures out exactly who she really is, and what she came here to do to him. Some mates are fated to fall in love. Wren was fated to bring hers down.

Chapter 1: The Rejection

"I reject you, Ronan Blackthorn, as my mate."

The words came out steady. Calm, even. Nobody in that packed hall could have guessed what they cost me.

Three hundred wolves stared at me like I'd lost my mind, because as far as they knew, I had. You don't reject an Alpha. You definitely don't reject him on the one night he's being crowned, in front of everyone he now rules.

What none of them knew was that I hadn't walked into Blackthorn territory looking for a mate. I'd walked in looking for the man who destroyed my family, and I was fairly sure I was standing three feet away from him.

My wolf hadn't warned me the bond was coming. She'd gone quiet the second his eyes found mine across the hall, and by the time I understood what that silence meant, it was already too late to stop the words leaving my mouth.

Mate, she said. Just that. Then nothing else, because even she knew what came next couldn't be undone.

Ronan rose out of the Alpha's chair before he'd decided to move, the way the pull drags a man onto his feet whether he wants to go or not. Up close he was bigger than the stories, dark haired, jaw tight, and when his eyes locked on mine they weren't hungry the way a new mate's should be.

They were hunting.

"You feel it," he said. Not a question. Loud enough to carry to the back wall, where I'd been trying, and failing, to stay invisible.

Every head in the hall turned to watch what I'd do next. Waiting for the version of this story where I run to him and everyone claps.

I gave them the opposite instead.

"I do," I said. "And I reject you."

For one full second, nobody breathed.

Then the room broke apart into noise. A woman gasped like she'd been struck. A man laughed once, short and stunned, and swallowed it fast when nobody joined him. Wolves reject mates sometimes; that part isn't shocking. Rejecting an Alpha on his crowning night, in front of every wolf who now answers to him, is a different kind of insult. The kind that gets a girl dragged out by sunrise.

I already knew that. I'd planned to be gone before it mattered.

Ronan didn't shout. Didn't shift. Didn't do any of the things a rejected Alpha was supposed to do.

He went still, the way something goes still right before it decides whether you're worth chasing.

"Say your name again," he said, quiet now, which was somehow worse than loud.

"I already gave it when I joined border patrol."

"Say it slower."

My pulse was hammering so hard I was sure he could hear it from where he stood. "Wren. Wren Calloway."

Something moved behind his eyes, fast, gone before I could name it, like the name had landed somewhere it shouldn't fit and fit anyway.

That flicker should have scared me more than it did. Instead, all I could think was: he doesn't know yet. Whatever he almost recognized, it wasn't enough.

"Calloway isn't a pack name I know," he said.

"I'm not from a pack you'd know."

"Try me."

I'd spent eight years learning how to hold still under pressure without cracking, so I didn't crack now. "Respectfully, Alpha, I just humiliated you in front of everyone you rule. I don't think you're owed anything else tonight."

A few wolves near the front laughed at that, quick and surprised, like they hadn't expected anyone to talk to him that way. His mouth almost moved. Almost.d

"No," he agreed. "You don't owe me a thing." He said it like he was filing the moment away for later, not letting it go. "But you're not leaving Blackthorn land tonight. There's a storm rolling off the ridge, and I don't send border wolves out into lightning. Not even the one who just rejected me in my own hall."

"How generous."

"It's not generosity. It's that I don't lose wolves before I understand them."

He turned to head back toward his chair, and that was when it happened. The movement pulled his sleeve up just enough, just for a second, to show a mark on the inside of his forearm. Pale, raised, shaped like a burn that had healed wrong.

I knew that scar.

Not from him. From a description I'd carried in my chest for eight years, whispered to me by the one person who crawled out of the fire that took my family and lived long enough to tell me what she saw before she died. A man's arm, marked by flame, holding a torch he wasn't supposed to be holding.

The room kept moving around me. Somewhere, the silver haired woman near the dais was already saying something sharp about wolves with no papers and no pack. I heard none of it.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat, and underneath it, a promise I'd made to myself the night my family died, finally answering back.

Eight years, I thought, watching him settle back into the Alpha's chair like the ground under him had never once shifted. I finally found you.
