“Release her.” Those words cut through the courtyard like a blade, stopping everything in its track. The guards who were holding my arms immediately froze before letting me go. It was as if everyone suddenly remembered that they wanted to stay alive. My heart pounded violently. Slowly, I lifted my head. For the first time, our eyes met. The Lycan King. For a moment I almost forgot how to breathe, as his eyes bore into mine. He stood there, a few feet away dressed entirely in black. His broad shoulders carried an authority that seemed to bend the air around him. Then, his silver eyes swept across the room, in a cold and unreadable way… yet so terrifying. I had heard stories about him almost all my life. Everyone knew something terrifying about the king, yet they could only whisper about it behind close doors, or late into the night. It was no news that even rogue packs kneel before him, and Alphas tremble in their boots when he is near. Now he was standing here in front of me. Father caught himself first, and rushed forward. “Your majesty!” he bowed so low it almost looked painful. But beneath the calmness in his voice, I could sense the panic in them. Immediately, everyone else bowed, lowering their heads in greeting. Yet I found myself staring, as though my mind had stopped working. That was until a tiny voice in my head reminded me that I was courting death. I lowered my head instantly, my breathing becoming uneven. Just then, I felt one of the guards grab my arm again, as though silently telling me to comply with the punishment from earlier. “Follow me quietly, don’t make a scene.” He whispered. Panic exploded inside me. I can’t let them lock me away… that would mean I had no chance at fighting this. They would force me to really become Kael’s mistress. No. I moved before my mind could catch up. I pulled away from the guard with all my strength, and sprinted forward. Gasps erupted around me instantly. Only then did I realize what I was doing. I wasn’t just moving; I was running toward the Lycan King. His guards moved quickly. About six of them stepped in front of him, shielding him from the impending attack. But that wasn’t necessary, because the moment our eyes met, my feet stopped, and in an instant, my knees hit the ground. I froze. I didn’t do that. Silence followed. Deep enough that I heard someone suck in a sharp breath. That also wasn’t me. Someone else cursed quietly. I forced myself to look up slowly. But my hands trembled violently. For a moment, I wondered if I made the wrong choice running to him. My hands kept shaking from terror. I was terrified he would throw me away, or even punish me for daring to do this. Still, I forced the words out. “Your majesty, please help me. They are trying to force me.” My voice shook slightly. I hated that it shook. Slowly, I pointed toward Kael, my throat tightening as I whispered the forbidden words. “They want me to become his mistress, when he is marrying my stepsister.” I bowed even lower. “Please help me… I don’t want this.” My eyes burned, as I kept my head down. But when no one spoke, I slowly lifted my head again. The king was staring at me. There was no expression on his face. No reaction. No movement. My heart dropped. Oh God. What have I done? The next second, my father’s horrified voice suddenly exploded. “Your Majesty!” I flinched at that. “This is a misunderstanding.” I looked back. Father looked like he was going to collapse. Beads of sweat had formed on his forehead. “Your Majesty, no one is forcing her into anything. This is rightful bond.” Aurora immediately nodded. “Yes, Your Majesty. Melody is simply too emotional right now.” Emotional. I scoffed painfully. Of course. I was always the emotional, dramatic one. The problem. Father stepped forward instantly. “Please, pardon my child, your Majesty. She had always been troublesome.” My hands slowly curled. I wasn’t even surprised at there words anymore. Not even a little. My eyes slowly drifted back to the king. Strangely, his eyes were still fixed on me… the same blank expression. I looked away, digging my fingers into my palm. Shit. What have I done? Just then, I heard Kael speak. His voice was quiet. “Your Majesty, she is my mate. This is not a forced bond.” My breathing stopped. No. Not now. I heard whispers explode around us. “Mates?” “They’re mates?” “How—” “I thought he is engaged to princess Aurora?” For a moment, I thought I caught the King’s jaw tighten. Or was I imagining it. Rage surged through me. I turned to Kael, but was stunned when he said the next words that shattered everything. His eyes bore into mine as he whispered. “I love her.” Those words felt like a slap. Love? My chest hurt. Just a few minutes ago, he still wanted me hidden. Now he is claiming he loved me. “You are crazy.” I said through gritted teeth. But Kael ignored me. He continued. “We’ve had disagreements. Nothing to bother your Majesty with.” I quickly turned back to the king. “That is not true, Your Majesty. They are lying… he’s lying.” The king’s expression didn’t change. Not even a little. But somehow, it felt like the air around him suddenly felt colder. His silver eyes slowly moved toward Kael. Then back at me. Then back toward Kael again. Nobody moved or spoke. Then, finally, his voice came. Calm. Cold. Absolute. “She is coming with me.” Silence fell. Then chaos exploded.SELENEThat fainting was my last minute resort, I had to get his attention somehow.I was practically there, dressed in an eye catching way expecting him to notice or at least compliment me like he used to do, but he was searching for Melody with his eyes. And when he had enough of the conversation, he decided to walk out on me.One beautiful thing about me is I’m a lovely actress, so acting like I have fainted wasn’t really a big deal for me.That nasty doctor just wants to ruin my plans somehow, each day I stay in the palace, I act like I’m not getting better, listing so many symptoms and insisting that the doctor administers medicine. The doctor knew nothing was wrong with me, he kept saying I just need rest and that I need to go home.I insisted that I wasn’t feeling strong enough, my mother was there as well to back me up.Thankfully, the king didn’t abandon me.He comes at least four times everyday to check on me, ordering the servants to get me anything I wanted, lots of fruits
~VICTOR~‘Hello’ I said to her sweetly. Her face widened in horror ‘How long have you been standing there?’ she asked.I shrugged ‘Well, long enough’‘Please tell me you didn’t hear anything’I laughed ‘You mean the conversation between yourself and your darling husband?’She nodded.‘I mean….I heard enough’Her eyes widened ‘What?’‘Mmhhh, don’t worry I won’t tell anyone. Your secret is safe with me’ I said, winking at her.‘I didn’t even hear you come in’ she murmured.‘I do that sometimes, I come in and surprise people’I knew the queen wasn’t happy, I can see how much she tries to hide her sadness with her smiles.Today I confirmed it all.The reason for her sadness, the reason why she changes the topic each time the king is brought up.I didn’t really hear much of the conversation between her and the king.I heard Selene name mentioned, saw how her shoulders fell, saw Aurelian reaction, the hard look he had when he looked at her, and I concluded everything in my head. The rest of
~MELODY~I ran my hairbrush repeatedly on my already brushed hair whispering to myself.‘This marriage will end in less than a year or more. Get your head in the game’I have been repeating these words to myself over the last half hour. Perhaps I believe that if I say it more than necessary, I might actually start believing it myself.Perhaps I would stop following the king with my eyes, watching his every move.Perhaps I would stop counting how many times he has checked on Selene.Perhaps I would stop imagining if he still loves her.I held the hair brush tightly staring at my reflection in the mirror. What is wrong with me?I signed the damn contract, I accepted his rules, I bluntly told him that I will never fall in love with him and now, even his scent gives me unimaginable butterflies.I struck myself across the face and yelled ‘Focus girl’A few minutes later I joined Lady Martha in the large library for my lessons.Yesterday’s topic was on duty, she taught me what’s expected of
~AURELIAN VOSS~(THE LYCAN KING)Today, the palace was in a celebratory mood. The ballroom has already been decorated, tables were arranged, there was wine, fruits and different delicacies.People were already trooping in their numbers to celebrate me.I didn’t want the party, but the elders insisted that we must throw one to thank the moon goddess for keeping me alive. This is the first time I have been able to come out of my chambers without my legs failing me or my eyes spinning. That poison really did a number on me, it rendered me bedridden, tortured me for days with fever, headache, body pain, dizziness and a host of others.I hate being sick because it makes everyone look at you like a pity project. Even as I was back at my feet, the ‘I’m so sorry your highness, hope are you getting better?’ kept streaming in.I won’t lie if the poison could humble me like this, I wonder what it could have done to Melody. She is a tough girl, but I doubt she can handle it.When the doctors told
~VICTOR~I had rushed back home, cleaned up, closed my eyes for a few seconds and sleep didn’t come.I sat up on my bed, threw a robe on and poured myself a glass of whiskey. It has been the longest 24 hours of my life.I almost died, I almost got the queen killed too and now the king is currently dealing with the poison designed to kill the queen.I still can’t believe the queen was the target. What could she have done to them? She was the sweetest person I have ever met, calm, down to earth, intelligent, and always minds her business. How can somebody like that be a target?Even when the king fell pale and cold as death, she was swift to get some herbs to help him stay alive. Is there anything she can’t do?She is simply amazing. She stayed with him all night, nursing him, could barely sleep, touching him almost every minute to make sure he was breathing.Last night I saw a woman that loves with her whole heart, a woman that can deny herself comfort just for her partner to be okay.
~MELODY~We all have scars that comes from our childhood or from our adulthood. For me I've got scars from both.Everybody gets to hide their scars and act like they don’t have any influence in their lives as a whole, but that's so far from the truth. Our scars will always be a part of us and it influences our progress in life. Each time I see Selene, I remember memories I thought I have forgotten. One mistake I keep making is thinking that the kings feelings for her have evaporated into thin air.No matter what happened between them, they were betrothed at one point. Those emotions will always remain forever.I lifted my eyes and saw her approaching me, my face drained of color. She had that cruel smile on her face.I frowned. What does she want again?I left her with the king as she wanted so why is she approaching me now?‘Your highness’ she said, giving me a little bow.I cleared my throat ‘Lady Selene, how can I help you?’She chuckled ‘You know you don’t have to use the whole t
MELODY~The second I stepped out of the black sedan, I forgot how to breathe. All the pack members were standing in front of our house. Worse still, everyone was staring. Servants, guards. and pack members. My fingers trembled as I took in the shocked expression on their faces.Shit. They weren’
~MELODY~My head kept pounding, even as I slowly opened my eyes. For the first time, I noticed I wasn’t in my room.I froze instantly, heart pounding. The soft gray curtains danced lightly in the wind beside a glass window, as morning sunlight spilled across the unfamiliar luxurious suite. The bed
MELODY~As though sensing my pain, rain began to fall as I stepped out of the pack.Yet, the coldness of it all didn’t make the ache in my chest hurt any less. I walked aimlessly through the empty street, my hair and dress soaked against my skin. I wasn’t sure where I was going, but I knew I coul
~MELODY~“Smile, Melody,” my stepsister said softly, her voice mocking. “Tonight is a happy occasion, and I have a big surprise for you.”Then her grip tightened painfully around my wrist. I looked up at her, silently taking note of the beautiful silver gown she had on, and the diamond jewelry. T
