“Release her.” Those words cut through the courtyard like a blade, stopping everything in its track. The guards who were holding my arms immediately froze before letting me go. It was as if everyone suddenly remembered that they wanted to stay alive. My heart pounded violently. Slowly, I lifted my head. For the first time, our eyes met. The Lycan King. For a moment I almost forgot how to breathe, as his eyes bore into mine. He stood there, a few feet away dressed entirely in black. His broad shoulders carried an authority that seemed to bend the air around him. Then, his silver eyes swept across the room, in a cold and unreadable way… yet so terrifying. I had heard stories about him almost all my life. Everyone knew something terrifying about the king, yet they could only whisper about it behind close doors, or late into the night. It was no news that even rogue packs kneel before him, and Alphas tremble in their boots when he is near. Now he was standing here in front of me. Father caught himself first, and rushed forward. “Your majesty!” he bowed so low it almost looked painful. But beneath the calmness in his voice, I could sense the panic in them. Immediately, everyone else bowed, lowering their heads in greeting. Yet I found myself staring, as though my mind had stopped working. That was until a tiny voice in my head reminded me that I was courting death. I lowered my head instantly, my breathing becoming uneven. Just then, I felt one of the guards grab my arm again, as though silently telling me to comply with the punishment from earlier. “Follow me quietly, don’t make a scene.” He whispered. Panic exploded inside me. I can’t let them lock me away… that would mean I had no chance at fighting this. They would force me to really become Kael’s mistress. No. I moved before my mind could catch up. I pulled away from the guard with all my strength, and sprinted forward. Gasps erupted around me instantly. Only then did I realize what I was doing. I wasn’t just moving; I was running toward the Lycan King. His guards moved quickly. About six of them stepped in front of him, shielding him from the impending attack. But that wasn’t necessary, because the moment our eyes met, my feet stopped, and in an instant, my knees hit the ground. I froze. I didn’t do that. Silence followed. Deep enough that I heard someone suck in a sharp breath. That also wasn’t me. Someone else cursed quietly. I forced myself to look up slowly. But my hands trembled violently. For a moment, I wondered if I made the wrong choice running to him. My hands kept shaking from terror. I was terrified he would throw me away, or even punish me for daring to do this. Still, I forced the words out. “Your majesty, please help me. They are trying to force me.” My voice shook slightly. I hated that it shook. Slowly, I pointed toward Kael, my throat tightening as I whispered the forbidden words. “They want me to become his mistress, when he is marrying my stepsister.” I bowed even lower. “Please help me… I don’t want this.” My eyes burned, as I kept my head down. But when no one spoke, I slowly lifted my head again. The king was staring at me. There was no expression on his face. No reaction. No movement. My heart dropped. Oh God. What have I done? The next second, my father’s horrified voice suddenly exploded. “Your Majesty!” I flinched at that. “This is a misunderstanding.” I looked back. Father looked like he was going to collapse. Beads of sweat had formed on his forehead. “Your Majesty, no one is forcing her into anything. This is rightful bond.” Aurora immediately nodded. “Yes, Your Majesty. Melody is simply too emotional right now.” Emotional. I scoffed painfully. Of course. I was always the emotional, dramatic one. The problem. Father stepped forward instantly. “Please, pardon my child, your Majesty. She had always been troublesome.” My hands slowly curled. I wasn’t even surprised at there words anymore. Not even a little. My eyes slowly drifted back to the king. Strangely, his eyes were still fixed on me… the same blank expression. I looked away, digging my fingers into my palm. Shit. What have I done? Just then, I heard Kael speak. His voice was quiet. “Your Majesty, she is my mate. This is not a forced bond.” My breathing stopped. No. Not now. I heard whispers explode around us. “Mates?” “They’re mates?” “How—” “I thought he is engaged to princess Aurora?” For a moment, I thought I caught the King’s jaw tighten. Or was I imagining it. Rage surged through me. I turned to Kael, but was stunned when he said the next words that shattered everything. His eyes bore into mine as he whispered. “I love her.” Those words felt like a slap. Love? My chest hurt. Just a few minutes ago, he still wanted me hidden. Now he is claiming he loved me. “You are crazy.” I said through gritted teeth. But Kael ignored me. He continued. “We’ve had disagreements. Nothing to bother your Majesty with.” I quickly turned back to the king. “That is not true, Your Majesty. They are lying… he’s lying.” The king’s expression didn’t change. Not even a little. But somehow, it felt like the air around him suddenly felt colder. His silver eyes slowly moved toward Kael. Then back at me. Then back toward Kael again. Nobody moved or spoke. Then, finally, his voice came. Calm. Cold. Absolute. “She is coming with me.” Silence fell. Then chaos exploded.~Melody~“What?” My eyes widened in shock and surprise. He walked away. How could he? He brought me here. Why act like I don’t matter? For all I know, I could be the cure to whatever disease or problem he has. Although I really don’t care about that, these are his people. The least he could do is say something on my behalf.“How dare he walk away and leave me in this situation?”The anger in me began to brew, and the hope I had earlier vanished immediately. I am beginning to feel stupid. How could I hope that he would do something? I’m sure, to him, I’m just his test subject. On a second thought, even as his test subject, shouldn’t I be regarded as of utmost importance?By now, the voices of the wolves around me sounded distant. I had managed to drown out their voices. The humiliation, the mockery, and all of the questions I was being asked no longer concerned me. Although I was standing there, it felt like I was in a different place entirely.I tried to think of the happy times, but
~Melody~Upon hearing what the noble man had said, everyone began saying, “Yes, yes, yes.” They are all agreed with him and start to whisper to each other once again. I strained my ears so hard to hear them, but I just couldn’t pick any sounds. As I couldn’t hear anything, I decided to retreat back to my room. However, before I could leave, one of the wolves downstairs caught sight of me.“Is that her?” The Nobelman who saw me asked, pointing at my direction.By this time, everyone had begun to pay their attention on me. I felt scrutinized, so I quickly dragged my legs as fast as possible into the comfort of my room.“She is going, someone get her.” A female wolf with a red head shouted.Hearing her voice, panic shot through my bones, and I started to move hurriedly. After hearing the redhead female wolf, the guards got to work to capture me. Thankfully, I got into the safety of my room, the one I had stay in for the past two days and night that I have been here. However, before I cou
“Yes, why didn’t the Lycan king react to me if such a reaction could happen?” I asked myself why I was dragging my feet across the hall.“Could I really be the cure?” The elderly words from before sounded in my head. I can’t believe this is my life now. As I walked across the hall, werewolves gathered in two, some in three groups. I could swear that they are all talking about me.I’m the new shining thing for their amusement. Surprisingly, no one dares to come closer to me. As I was dragging myself farther and farther from the prying eyes of people to the room I stayed in previously, a voice made me pause a little.“Your majesty, why have you brought the girl?” A wolf asked. Hearing this question, I couldn’t rest from the temptation. I walked a bit closer and then I realized that I was standing right in front of the throne room. The Lycan king was seated on the throne and about nine to ten elderly wolves were standing in front of him. I suppose they are discussing about me.“And when
POV: Melody With this question in my mind , I ran as fast as my legs could allow me. I didn’t stop running until my legs ached, until The palace hall blurred into each other looking like stone, gold trim, and tall windows that made everything scream and feel like this a world I didn’t belong to. Well … I’m not supposed to be here . If only I hadn’t stupidly request the Lycan king to take me with him. If only I had been stupid enough …. “ Melody , what were you thinking” as soon as this thought formed in my mind, my legs stopped moving. Then I realized that I’m now in a quieter wing, somewhere the air felt colder… or maybe that was just my fear settling in. I pressed myself against the wall and tried to breathe normally. But my thoughts weren’t normal. “Is she the cure?” The words from the elders echoed again and again, twisting inside my head like something alive. Cure … cure to what? I swallowed hard. Dread had already begun to seep through my bones. Whatever I have gotten
MELODYThe maid's words stayed with me long after she left. The King’s claim? What was that even supposed to mean? I was a person, not some object someone could just put a claim on.I needed to get out of this room that was starting to feel too much like a cage.I walked to the door and tried the handle. It opened. The guards hadn't bothered to lock it after the maid had left. I stepped into the hallway, but didn't get far before two guards started walking toward me.I didn't think, I just ran in the opposite direction."I need to eat! You have to feed me!" I yelled, making it to the end of the hall before I hit a brick wall. I was breathing hard, my heart hammering against my ribs, waiting for them to shove or hit me.But they didn't. The two guards caught up to me, their movements professional. They grabbed my arms, but they were weirdly careful, like they were handling something that might shatter. They started dragging me back, and I kept fighting, trying to pull away even thoug
MELODYThe silence that followed the King's declaration was deafening. My gaze traveled from the floor to his rigid face before settling on my father. His expression, usually so stiff with arrogance, had been completely drained of color."Pardon me, your majesty, but... but you cannot..." My father stuttered, struggling to find the right words."I cannot?" The King repeated, his voice cold. His eyes narrowed as they travelled from my father's shaking lips to his toes."Forgive me, I did not mean to question you," my father stammered, his bravado crumbling. "But my daughter... she is a woman. You..."I knew what my father was driving at. Everyone in the room knew, but they were too terrified to voice it.Why was the Lycan King taking me? Fear settled in the pit of my stomach. Had I traded the role of a secret mistress for something worse?I stole a quick glance at Kael whose mouth hung open in disbelief, and then at Aurora, who looked ready to snap from suppressed rage. The King turned
