Chapter 27 – The Warning

Jane’s POV

I didn’t sleep much that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I felt him. His touch, his breath, the way he whispered my name. And then that picture… the message.

It played over and over in my mind like a curse.

By the time the sun came up, my pillow was still warm from where I’d been turning all night.

Sarah had left early, and the apartment felt heavier than usual. My heart was still somewhere between wanting Kennedy and fearing what could become of us.

When I finally got to the office, it was too quiet. The usual chatter didn’t reach my ears. Everyone seemed busy, heads down.

I forced a breath, straightened my blouse, and tried to act normal.

Whatever normal was anymore.

Kennedy’s office door was half open. I slowed down without meaning to. He was there, leaning over his desk, tie slightly loose, sleeves rolled. The sight of him made my chest tighten.

He looked up just then. Our eyes met.

For a second, I thought maybe he’d smile, or nod… something. But he didn’t.
