Sophia's pov
What does he mean by Mate? I stared into the glowing red eyes of this beast before me. The once terrified eyes no longer sent fear within me, but ... Peace. I hovered my eyes around the face of this human like wolf on me. It seems to be doing the same, cause I noticed how its eyes moved around me. What is happening? I should be feeling scared but I no longer have fear for this beast. Why is this so? I remained still on the ground. I didn't even feel like leaving where I was. My eyes remained on the creature. It suddenly lowered its face down at me like earlier. But this time _instead of sniffing into my hair_ its face began caressing mine. I felt a sudden spark and a strange feeling towards this creature. It's not as dangerous as I thought it was. It's harmless. It kept caressing me and I couldn't help but feel so drawn to this creature. I found my hand moving to its face, caressing it back with so much feeling within me. It lifted its head, giving me the chance to caress it further. When its eyes fell on me again, I felt my heart beating. Not in fear, but... But... BANG! The sound of gunshot cane in, interrupting the moment between this creature and I. I felt my heart skip, cause the gunshot came right at the beast. I got scared when I saw this, but was a bit relieved because the creature had avoided the impact by getting off of me and moving to the side. Who shot at it? "Stay away from my daughter!" I heard my mothers voice. Fear took over me as I lifted myself off the ground to look back. "Mom? " There she was, coming closer to me with a rifle in hand, getting ready to fire at the beats again. I gasped and turned back to look at the creature. It stood firmly, glaring at my mother with so much rage in his eyes. "Come near her and I'll end you! " She yelled at it from behind. My eyes were still on the creature. It soon dropped its eyes on me, giving a sad expression. What is happening? This is a creature that got everyone running and almost killed me. But it suddenly changed and... Why am I feeling so worried? Hearing the sound of my mother's rifle corking... "Go! " I ordered the creature. Without hesitating, it dashed off into the forest with speed. "Damn it! " Mother cursed. I turned back and saw her coming closer to me. She immediately grabbed me up to my feet and began helping me back home. The moment we arrived home... "How dare you Sophia?!" Mom yelled at me in anger. "You snuck out of the house and went into the forest?! Why did you do this? Where did you learn this nonsense?! What... What were you doing in the forest in the first place? " She questioned me, grabbing me by the arm roughly and pushing me to the bed. I fell on my bed, groaning at my injured ankle. "Why did you sneak out?!" "Nothing Mom, " I lied to her. "Nothing?" She raised her voice, grabbing me by the arm again. "Don't tell me it's nothing Sophia. I met Clara and the others while looking for you. They told me you were with them at their stupid party, before you were all attacked, and you're lying to me? " "I just wanted to have some fun, that's all. " "Be quiet! " She pushed me again. I felt so scared seeing Mom so mad. It's the first time she'll go all rampage at me. Why won't she? I snuck out of the house without her knowledge. She's bound to get mad. "You are lucky that I came on time to save you. That werewolf would have eaten you. " "Werewolf?" I uttered, looking surprised. So that's what it's called? "Those creatures are dangerous. This is why I kept you indoors all these years. But you feel I am making things up and trying to trap you indoors!" "But Mom, that creature... It's not dangerous." "What? " She lifted her brow at me in astonishment. Her facial expression got me contemplating if I should go on or not, but I did. "Yes, that creature isn't dangerous. At first it was going to, but it stopped." "What rubbish are you saying Sophia?" "Mate," I recorded the word the werewolf had called me when it sniffed into my hair. Facing Mom, I noticed how her eyes came large at me. "What did you say? " She asked, still with that expression. Does she know something? "Mom, what is Mate? " "Where did you hear that from? " She questioned. "That creature... It called me Mate. What does it mean?" "That creature said nothing. You must have been hearing things when it tried to kill you " She claimed. But I still stood my ground. "I know what I heard wasn't my mind Mom. It referred to me as Mate and then... It caressed me," I said, touching my cheek, remembering how beautiful it felt with the werewolf. But i'm drawn out of my fantasy by my mother. She kept saying I'm hearing things and don't know what I'm saying. "First you left this house without my knowledge, joined those naughty people at a forest party , got into trouble with a werewolf and you're lying that it called you some mate?!" She raised her voice at me. "But I'm not lying Mom. I know what I heard. " "Are you challenging me? " "I'm not Mom. I'm only..." "Enough! " She shunned me. "I won't take this bad behavior and disrespect from you. From now on you're grounded." "What?!" I exclaimed at Mom's decision towards me. "You heard me. You are grounded for two months. You will no longer step out of the house with me. And if you dare sneak out, consider yourself grounded for two years, " She glared at me, walking out of the room. This is the first time Mom will ever ground me. For two months I won't be able to step outside. My chance of exploring the outside world has been taken away from me. "But I wasn't lying," I said thinking of the werewolf. "It did say something. It called me Mate. But why is Mom getting so mad over it?" I wondered to myself. Is there something she knows but doesn't want to tell me?Xavier's POVMother's words just had to become the biggest joke of the century; the only thing was that no one was laughing. Least of all, myself."You never hated humans because they were weak, Xavier. You hated them because it was easier than facing the truth."Within that, the acrid song clanged within me, digging at corners of thoughts I struggled burying long. I clench my fist and dig fingernails deep into my palm with the strength therein-none against this crystal clear realization now stinging across my mind. She was right.I have hated humans with all my being, believing them to be the ones that killed the old Alpha-the root of every tragedy my clan had to face. That had been the case, and it was what molded me into what currently I am: an unrecognizable monster. It wasn't until I met her that everything came unraveling: Sophia.I had seen her first, and it wasn't some fairy tale: no music playing that I was supposed to hear and then gaze deep, soulfully into the middle of a p
Xaiver POVBut the wind whips through ruin, carrying with it scents of ash and blood and something worse: despair. I was running through what had once been villages, my paws pounding against the earth, my desperation and heart racing with every stride that brought me closer."Please," I whispered, uttering my first silent prayer to the Moon Goddess. "Let her be safe.".Nothing mattered to me-the amount of wreckage that surrounded me, the smoldering heap of houses that lay there like remnants of burnt towns and anything else, were all carrying huge loads of odor due to this fire. It was so dense in the street that every breath felt choked; I felt all shattered streets silenced as carriers of ghosts of dead people. But nothing mattered anymore. None of it did. Only she did.I growled louder, pressing harder-my claws deep in the dirt-moving me faster toward Sophia's town. Farther in, the worse it got. What once used to be such a peaceful settlement was no more and lay as nothing but rubb
Xavier's POVI entered the big hall. Immediately, it was like walking into the boiling pot of tension. My mother sat in her usual chair near the fireplace, clutching a glass of red wine in her hand. She was unreadable, and opposite her sat Cindy-the ever-smiling snake-her dark eyes dancing with humor.I had heard them talking minutes before I came in-whispering something evil, something which concerned her.Sophia.My jaw clenched while taking a few steps forward, my gaze fastened to my mother's serene yet aloof face. "What were you talking about?" My voice came out even, etched with muted anger. She said nothing. She sipped her wine slowly, set the glass down with a soft clink against the wood table. And kept silent. It was driving me mad. Before I could press for more, a low chuckle rose from Cindy. "Ah, Xavier," she said, her frame a pace nearer to mine. "Still so impatient."I whipped toward her in a second, muscles clenching. It was a while since we faced off, yet with only one g
Xavier's POVI didn't knock.I'd opened it by a hair, and the doors shut behind me with sufficient force that the sound rang in the room.I was panting with evident effort in rough, stuttering breaths as I gazed at what I beheld. My mother. Cindy. Here by this big wooden table, their hands working over the folds of a map.A map that had been too close to me just made my guts turn to see the concentration of red boils on it.Target zones.I used to study this map—heck, I helped map it.Pre-Sophia.Pre-Sophia and me getting together and my life going to hell. Then I figured that annihilating human settlement was the only way we could be on top. Then Sophia came and reduced all my plans to shambles.I had moved on from all that.Shelved it.And never so much as glanced backward. So how in the devil's name did my mom and Cindy still lingered around it today?I gritted teeth with furious indignation seething in me.I could still feel servants still lingering, hovering as if no one ever mad
Xavier's POVHours prior I'd spent with Sophia in the center of what was remaining of her home, my life as good as it was ever going to be.I'd slept more soundly than I'd slept in years.Sophia and I'd been. incredible. the previous evening. It wasn't the sex thing—though that had been insane—it was the chemistry we'd experienced. Something I'd never believed existed prior to this.I never had a moment's doubt she was mine, but the previous night had left her in a position where there were none. She was the whole world to me.I smoothed out my hair loose, a smile tugging at my lips.I wanted to see her.I wanted to have her close. Not wishing to waste another minute, I got up and took a shirt and set out leaving my apartments and looking for her.But as I went down the corridor--Voices.Low and quiet but unmistakable.I went down, straining hard with my ears for the voice of my mother. And Cindy's.My eyebrows flew up, I jerked away from the wall instinctively and listened."Everyth
Sophia's POVAsh and smoke hung around.Old home, where I had lived those years ago, when I lived at, oh so long, long, long, long, long ago, was burned: ash was all that was left: charred timber, snapped-up furniture, and shattered glass all over where I ever rested remained, desolation spilling upon me.Chilled to the bone, my hands were shaking, because I couldn't catch my breath, couldn't cling to it.The old fires now were nothing but ash and dust. And my mother.I gritted, the throat shutting over a thudding mass.Where was she?The thought crept through me, twisting in me like some monster and booming insistently at the center of my chest above the curve of my ribs. And then, suddenly—Footsteps.I spun on one heel, braced stance ready to bludgeon, fist slapped around the knife-hand on thigh like on buckler. The screen: vapory wound, face unmistakably familiar.Xavier.Peace storm black.Wound in his strange-to-me plain black, slouching, head thrown back, sneering, fit-on-the-v
