Author's POV:

Karina stormed into her room, soaked to the bone, her dripping hair slapping against her shoulders as she marched across the marble floor. Her glittering gown clung to her skin, the wet fabric whispering with each furious step. She stopped in front of the velvet settee, bent down, and yanked a heel off her foot with a growl. The expensive stiletto flew across the room and landed with a dull thud against the wardrobe.

“Dammit!” she shrieked, grabbing the second shoe and hurling it with even more force.

The door creaked open right then.

“Whoa, whoa!” Don Corradi ducked, just narrowly avoiding the projectile as it sailed over his head and crashed into a vase on the sideboard. The ceramic shattered loudly.

“What’s wrong, my doll?” he asked, straightening, brushing imaginary dust from his perfectly pressed charcoal suit.

Karina turned to face him, red-faced and trembling, her teeth clenched so tightly her jaw twitched. Her eyes, rimmed with smudged mascara, blinked once, twic

Miley's POV:"Just because someone saved your life once…” Nico spoke up, his voice gravelly and low. “It doesn’t mean they have the right to issue your death sentence. Saving your life was his responsibility and his choice, not a favour for you.”The breath that I was taking got stuck in my lungs. His words had just cut through the tangled webs of fear and guilt inside me, releasing me of all my burden at once. And all with that smirk on his face and the darkness in his eyes… that was enough to make me weak in my knees. My tears were still wet on my cheeks, but before I could even think of wiping them away myself, Nico’s thumb brushed them aside, his touch unexpectedly gentle for a man who carried violence like his purpose in life . The next moment, I felt his soft mouth pressed against mine. His breath fanned against my face, as his lips softly caressed my cheeks. And then, my lips parted, almost out of instinct. Because clearly, my brain was in no state to be functioning at a

Nico's POV:“And yet…” I said slowly, curious to know how she had ended up in the freezing waters on a night when she was supposed to be the centre of attention. “She is the one who pushed you in, wasn’t she?”Miley shook her head, a sad smile ghosting her lips. “No… it wasn’t Emily. It was Archie… my fiancé.”My entire body went still with anticipation. That son of a bitch…“I couldn’t believe it.”She whispered softly. “You know? I still remember the look in his eyes. Cold and detached, like I was a burden he had finally gotten rid of… but the moment I fell into the water, he looked shocked. Shocked! Like he didn't even know what he had done.”She let out a scoff, refusing to look at me as she spoke, eyes fixed on the swirling current of the creek.“Then I started piecing everything together. Every single person in my life… they were never loyal to me. Not really. I used to think I was just paranoid, but now I know I wasn’t.”Her hands clenched into the folds of her dress.“Afte

Miley's POV:Nico looked at me like he was seeing something he didn’t quite know how to name. His eyes searched mine, steady but unreadable, and then his voice broke the silence, low and deliberate.“There’s been a lot of pain in your childhood, hasn’t there?”I stared ahead at the stream, the way the water glimmered like silver threads under the moonlight. I didn’t answer right away. My throat felt tight.“I was grateful for my life,” I said finally. “However it was. The first few years… I had nothing to complain about. We were very well to do, because my mom's business was flourishing. I my had books, my mother’s stories to keep me company whenever my parents were not around. I had my own friends, and quiet gardens, and days where it almost felt like peace.”I paused and folded my hands in my lap. “But yes. I faced betrayal. More than I thought I ever could. The worst came from my father.”Nico’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t speak.“I used to think they had the greatest love story…

Nico's POV:My muscles were coiled tight, my instincts screaming for action. Every sound, every crunch of a branch beneath hurried feet, sharpened my senses further. I was just about to pivot and strike, when a soft sound knocked on my eardrums.“Nico?”I froze. That voice was gentle and familiar… and definitely not a threat.I turned sharply to find Miley standing a few feet away, holding a glass lantern. Its golden glow flickered against her face, reflecting in her glassy eyes which were fixed on my face, reflecting concern and curiosity in almost equal measure.“Miley.”She took a step forward, eyeing me cautiously. “Are you okay?”My posture stiffened, not wanting to show any more vulnerability… for some reason, fate was really adamant on bringing us face to face during the worst lows. I drew a sharp breath and turned my gaze away, my jaw clenching on its own. “Yes. I’m fine. Why are you here?”“You seemed disturbed all day…”She said quietly. “Then you just vanished. Tulio sa

Nico's POV:I hadn’t meant to walk this far.Three days ago, I could barely lift my head off the pillow without cursing. But now, somehow, my feet had dragged me all the way down a dirt path past the fence line, through the dew- slick grass, and to the edge of a narrow creek that cut through the woods behind this villa. My lungs were starting to burn, and there was a stitch on my side which ached like hell. Every breath tugged painfully at the stitches in my abdomen, but I didn’t stop walking.I needed to get out of that house… Not because of the boredom, or the feeling of being stuck in bed, even the pain that hardly ever left my side nowadays. No… it was because of her.Miley. She was everywhere, in every corner of that house. I found her pacing barefoot in the kitchen at dawn, gathering flowers and fruits from the orchard, completely unaware that I was watching her from the balcony. Sometimes, I would go downstairs only to find her and Tulio laughing maniacally while he smeared

Nico's POV:I stirred awake, groggy and disoriented, as if I’d been underwater for too long. The room was dim, the kind of dim that came with closed curtains and a heavy air. My head throbbed, and my limbs felt like they were made of lead. I shifted slightly, trying to move, but everything felt weighted—my arms, my chest, even my eyelids. Then, the door creaked open.Soft footsteps padded across the room. I didn’t open my eyes, but I felt it—a cool touch against my forehead. A damp cloth, gentle and soothing.Fingers brushed lightly against my temple. A hush settled over me, quiet and warm. I let go. Sleep pulled me back in.When I woke again, the light was brighter. Curtains had been drawn open, and the air didn’t feel quite so heavy anymore. I blinked, trying to sit up, but pain sparked behind my eyes and ran down my spine.“Easy there,” a voice said gently. “Good. You woke up on your own. I was just debating whether to leave the food here and come back in a bit.”I turned toward th
