Chapter 1

Author: Luna Baa
My hands were covered in black motor oil as I crouched in the auto repair shop. It was located at the corner of the street and was no bigger than 100 square feet.

The scar that stretched across the back of my hand would occasionally throb in pain because of nerve damage.

It had been three months since I had been released from prison. By now, I had already gotten used to the weight of the wrench in my hands and the scent of motor oil.

I was still lost in thought when I was suddenly yanked back to the present by an angry voice.

"Jamie Lachman, you bastard! So, you've been hiding out here all this time!"

The sharp and hateful voice shattered the silence in the auto repair shop.

I lifted my head just in time to see my ex-fiancee, Winona Green, storm in with the rest of the Lachman family.

My mother, Heather Solden, discarded her pride the moment she laid eyes on me, throwing herself on the floor that was covered with metal shavings. She didn't seem to care that she was wearing a silk dress that cost a small fortune at that moment, grabbing my leg and letting out a heartwrenching wail.

"I'm begging you, Jamie. Please, save Matthew! He's only 22. He's suffering from an aortic dissection. All the doctors in Highville say that you're the only surgeon who's capable of performing such a delicate surgery! He's your brother!"

I looked down at Heather, feeling nothing even when I noticed that her carefully-styled hair had been stained with black waste oil.

My brother?

In my previous life, I was the true heir of the Lachman family who had gone missing. When the Lachmans finally found me, I actually believed that I finally had a home to call my own.

Unfortunately, tragedy was all that awaited me.

The Lachmans had only tracked me down because the fake heir, Matthew Lachman, had been involved in a case of fatal medical malpractice. They needed a high-profile scapegoat to pin the blame on to save Matthew's reputation.

Standing next to Heather was my ex-fiancee, Winona. She still had a high-and-mighty attitude, treating herself as a queen who was better than everyone else.

Winona pulled out a yellowed and slightly tattered engagement contract from her Hermes bag. She dropped it on the counter that was covered in oil stains as if she were giving a few pennies to a beggar.

"I'll sweep your medical malpractice under the rug if you go to the hospital and save Matthew's life right now, Jamie. This engagement contract is still valid. I'll marry you immediately and restore your position as the heir of the Lachman family."

Pain throbbed through me as I processed the absolutely ridiculous situation I was in.

Before I was imprisoned, Winona had personally used a scalpel to sever the nerves in my right hand just to protect Matthew's reputation. She had then forced me to sign the confession letter.

My father, Terry Lachman, had coldly looked at my bloody hand and said, "The Lachman family doesn't need a useless son like you. Matthew is our pride and joy."

I closed my eyes. I could still feel the icy sensation that had enveloped my body and sank into my bones when death claimed me in my prison cell in my previous life.

I slowly lifted my right hand, showing them how my fingers were trembling violently. Just holding a simple wrench took all the strength that I had.

"Save him?" I asked, barking a self-deprecating laugh. "Mrs. Lachman, Ms. Green, have you already forgotten what you did to me?"

I rolled up my sleeve, revealing the scar that would ruin any surgeon's career. "You personally ruined this hand just to protect that imposter. What do you hope to achieve by forcing me into that operating room? Do you want me to save him? Or perhaps you want me to expedite his death."

Terry's temper exploded upon hearing my words. He slammed his hands on the counter, causing the small parts to scatter everywhere. An ear-piercing clanging rang through the air.

"Drop the act, Jamie! You're a Lachman, and yet you have such a despicable character! You want money, don't you? I'll give you as much as you want as long as you save Matthew. But you have to come with us now!"

Although I was their biological son, from their perspective, I couldn't even worth the dirt on the shoes of Matthew, the fake heir they had raised for the past 20 years.

They were determined to squeeze the last bit of usefulness out of me, even though my right hand was already ruined.

After being inactive for many years, the genius surgeon known as the 'Godhand', Jamie Lachman, has successfully completed the first-ever total nerve repair surgery in Redonia today."I was wearing a tailored, dark gray suit in the livestream as I stood on the stage under several blazing spotlights. My right hand didn't tremble even once as I held the medal that had been awarded to me, signifying that I had achieved the highest honor in the medical field.Quinn stood elegantly by my side."Dr. Jamie Lachman, how did you manage to create a medical miracle despite the state of your right hand?" the reporter asked, her question ringing clearly throughout the hall.I looked into the camera lens. An amicable but frosty smile stretched across my lips as I answered, "The real 'Godhand' doesn't exist in the muscles. It's an inextinguishable flame that exists in a heart that burn

It was carried out immediately.Apparently, he suffered a complete mental breakdown before his punishment and kept shouting that Jamie had returned from the dead. Both Terry and Heather were sentenced to three years in prison for harboring a criminal and bribery.Since the Lachman family had declared bankruptcy, all their assets and properties were seized. As a result, when they were released from prison, they had no choice but to live in the dim and damp slums of the city. They made a living by rummaging through trash cans for paper.Heather used to always have an elegant air about her. Now, her fingers were constantly covered with chilblains. Her shoulders were always hunched as she loitered around the streets, intently studying the faces of the young men who walked past her.Winona didn't serve time in prison, but death seemed t

Chaos had descended upon the room. The police officers were busy arresting the Lachmans when I was suddenly hit with a powerful dizzy spell. This was the final step of my plan. Before coming here, I had taken a drug that could temporarily stop my heart. Quinn had smuggled it into the country for me.I wanted to "die" in front of the Lachmans. Only then could I completely shed my identity as Jamie Lachman and start my new life."Jamie? What's happening?"Winona was the first to notice that something was wrong. She ignored how the officers tried to stop her and ran into the operating room, catching my swaying body.A line of fresh blood trickled from the corner of my mouth as I looked at her. A relieved but mocking smile stretched across my lips as I muttered, "Winona… I'll be returning this hand to you. I'm also… returning the Lachman family to you."My right hand fell limply to the cold floor with a muffled thud.Just then, a long and high-pitched beep emitted from the heart r

Matthew continued confessing his crimes. He couldn't distinguish between reality and dreams any longer, firmly believing that he was caught in a dark conspiracy."That idiot Jamie must have died a tragic death in prison, huh? I even paid the prison warden half a million dollars to ensure that they took good care of him every day!"He burst out laughing before he continued, "Since his right hand is useless now, he'll never be able to pick up a scalpel ever again!"Winona is also an idiot! I just had to get a fake scar to convince her to love me to death! The Green family's shares will be mine sooner or later. All of the Lachman family's assets will also belong to me!"Once I get my hands on the God's Reagent's patent, I'll send those two old fools to a nursing home and let them rot there for the rest of their lives!"Matthew cackled boisterously as he suddenly bolted up into a sitting position. His chest was still cut open, allowing fresh blood to leak all over the operating table,

Matthew suddenly let out a bloodcurdling scream. His body arched unnaturally, causing the half-done stitches on his chest to rip open as he thrashed around.Fresh blood spurted out and splattered across the shadowless lamp and my face."Get away! Don't touch me! Leon… I wasn't responsible for damaging your lungs! It was Jamie! Jamie was the main surgeon!"Matthew clawed at the air wildly. His irises had turned completely black, a symptom of extreme fear.Terry frantically slammed his hands against the glass in fear. "What the hell are you doing, Jamie? Sedate him right now! He's going crazy! He's going to die on the operating table!" he roared.Heather collapsed to the floor and cried, "Please save him, Jamie! I'm begging you! He's just spouting nonsense. Don't take his words to heart!""Save him?"I took two steps back so Matthew's filthy blood wouldn't dirty my clothes. "He's not going crazy. He just injected himself with something quite interesting."I looked directly at Ter

The air in the operating room seemed to freeze, leaving only Matthew's terrified screams that echoed off the walls.Winona's furious expression morphed into one of bewilderment. The color drained from her face. She stared at Matthew, who was thrashing around wildly on the operating table. He was her savior, and she had loved and protected him for the past decade."W-What's he talking about? Leon? The truth?" she asked, her voice shaking so badly that her words were barely intelligible. She subconsciously clutched her necklace. Matthew had given it to her as a love token.I stood next to the operating table. I picked up the scalpel again, but I made no move to stop Matthew's bleeding.I slowly raised my head and made eye contact with Winona through the glass. "Do you actually know Matthew, Winona?"My voice was colored with mocking and iciness when it echoed through the speaker. "Do you remember the fire ten years ago? You were nearly burned to ashes in the ruins. Do you know who
