Didn't they come as a package?

The insides weren't as packed as I thought it would be. Most of the people were sitting on chairs, reading and conversing in hush tones, so we were basically the only ones walking through the aisles.

I followed Matt as he led us deeper into the library. We wandered through aisles stacked high with tomes, the soft glow of reading lamps casting a warm, golden light on the covers. It was so magical, the feeling like being transported into another realm. Matt's hand remained in mine, our fingers intertwined, sending sparks of electricity through my body.

As we walked, he would occasionally stop, drawn to a particular title or cover. He would pull a book off the shelf, his eyes scanning the blurb before handing it to me, a silent request for my opinion. I would nod or shake my head, and he would either add it to the growing pile with me or return it to its place.

We explored the fantasy section, Matt's eyes shining with excitement as he devoured the titles. He pulled out a beautifully illu

I chuckled, tucking some strands of my hair behind my ears. “You saw me?”“From the moment you followed my car. You didn't think I would notice your car trailing behind me, did you? Not only were you clumsy in your spy work, but your car's too obvious to be missed.”My face burned brighter, embarrassment and frustration swirling together. I looked away, trying to gather my thoughts. He was right. I hadn't exactly been subtle. “Why didn't you say anything?”"Why?" He grinned, reached out to touch my hair, but my frown made his hand freeze mid-touch. “Wouldn't be fun if I did. So, why did you follow me?” “I… You just —”“The truth, baby.”I sighed. “Fine. I wanted to know what you were up to. You've been…different lately.” I raised an eyebrow, my tone laden with accusation.“And you couldn't ask me that?”I rolled my eyes. “When you kept giving unrealistic excuses?”Jay frowned, leaning on the window. “You could have still asked me. Who knows, I might have given you the right answer. Y

I didn't know just chatting with someone would be this draining. By the time I drove home from the cafe after hearing Smart drone on about the man he believes liked him, I was ready to crash in bed. What I wouldn't give just to take back the time I wasted listening to him. When he had said, “Let's do this again some other time.” Immediately, I stood up and refused him. “I'm afraid I'm too busy with graduation to spare any more time with you, dear.”“But —”“I only got this chance to come out because I got a free day. I doubt Debra would give me another chance like this. Bye.”Let's not meet again, I added in my mind, waving at him with a smile. He didn't look that pleased at being refused, but I couldn't care less about that. When I got home, I dipped my feet into the bath, while sipping the chilled water I took from the fridge. Thankfully, Dad wasn't around to nag me for doing that. For two days now, that man has been on my neck about the food I consumed, which was why I wouldn't

“And you believe I'm the right one for that?” I picked up my coffee and took a sip, eyes locked with his. “Aren't there others who would love to be friends with you? The last I checked, we have no reason to be here, sitting across from each other, eating and chatting. I only got to know you through my brother, and now that you two aren't a thing anymore, I believe it's time for you to just let go.”I rubbed my finger on my eyebrows, feeling the irritation creeping in. “The circumstance we met each other doesn't define how our relationship should go.” He smiled. “We can be friends, even though I once dated your brother. From the time I met you, I had known we would be friends and —”“Said the man who almost shot me dead with his eyes then. Last I checked, you weren't that thrilled to meet me and when Jay asked me to sit in front instead of you, you felt like murdering me in cold blood.” I leaned back in my chair, fingers laced. “Just admit it. You're only seeking ways to get back with

MATTA week more. That was the time left before we graduate. It had been a hell of three weeks preparing for everything, and what I wouldn't give just to sleep all day today as it was my free day. Debra was gracious enough to give me a free day. Well, she was just considering my situation. To prove she would be the best aunt the baby would have, she was even willing to cut out on my work and give me a day to rest. I was supposed to be doing that, rolling on the bed thinking of my mate and the future, reading the new romance novel Debra got for me, and eating the cut fruits dad kept in the refrigerator for me, or even sleeping. I was supposed to do one of those things, but instead; I was in a café with Smart. Alone. Debra wasn't with me because I didn't tell her. She was busy as it was, and I didn't want to disturb her with my issues; after all, there was no need to be alarmed. We were meeting in my favourite cafe, at a place where I felt safe.“Hmm. The doughnuts here are tasty,” Sm

JAYI stared right at Smart, who was picking at his food, asking myself, not for the first time, how I had found myself in such a situation. I didn't even know how or why I accepted his request to have lunch with him. It could still be the lingering guilt from the time he almost ended his life because of me. I didn't want a repeat of that, knowing he might seek another way to harm himself. “What happened to your brother?”He glanced up at the question, shocked that I'd even spoken to him. What was he expecting? That I would ignore him? He pushed the food on the plate around before speaking, his voice almost a whisper.“He died of poor heart and lungs.” “How?”I'd never heard of people dying like that. We're wolves and even though we get hurt, we don't die easily. My mum died because she abused drugs, and Matt's mother died in an accident. I didn't know anyone could die of poor hearts and lungs. He had always been a sickly child, but he looked like he could have survived more years.

Jay's eyes widened in amusement, and he mumbled, “Uh-oh, trouble in paradise.”I shot him a warning glance, trying to keep my tone casual. “Yeah, I mean, I didn't exactly check on him, but I'm sure he's there.” If only Dad could see us. Grinning, Jay sat next to me, blowing on my left ear at intervals, and almost making me lose my composure. Had it not been for one thing, I would have yelled at him. I had to keep my mouth shut, so Dad wouldn't know what was going on. 'Just you wait,' I whispered, hoping Dad wouldn't hear it. “Are you certain he's not with you?”“Of course, he's —” “I'll call his phone then. If he's in his room, he'll answer.”I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead as Jay's expression turned mischievous. He slowly pulled out his phone and showed it to me, a wicked grin spreading across his face. The screen was black, and he mouthed, “Don't worry, it's off. He won't get me even if he calls.”Oh.Thank Fuck. For a second there, I was worried about getting caugh
