Lira

Later, Tova found me in the servants’ quarters. Her eyes were bright with excitement as she led me toward a narrow hallway.

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

I followed as we headed out through a cobblestone pathway.

“Do you always sneak out at night like this?”

“Only when my bones itch,” Tova said. “Can’t sleep unless I shift. Feels like my skin’s too tight if I don’t.”

I hesitated. I couldn't shift in her presence or anyone's.

My wolf’s coat was white from muzzle to tail, the kind of white that never blended in, that always made others look twice.

“I'm too tired to shift,” I said flatly.

She said I didn't have to. She pressed against a loose brick. It shifted with a gritty scrape, and a narrow gap widened. Inside, the tunnel stretched forward—stone slick with moss and water dripping steadily somewhere in the dark.

My eyes widened.

“Secret tunnel.” Tova’s smile widened . “It runs from the servants’ quarters to the forest. Past that, it opens toward the warrior base.”

Lira Hours later, I woke to Riven asleep beside me. I got out of bed, moving silently—washing my face, brushing my teeth. I was about to change when Jax burst in.“What the hell is he doing here?”Oh, goddess.I rushed to him and pressed a finger to my lips for silence.“Don’t wake him.”“He has no damn right—”I covered his mouth and whispered harshly through gritted teeth. “What did you expect me to do, Jax? Chase him away? You walked in freely,” I said, gesturing to the door.He glared at me, then at the door. “I’ll lock it. I won’t let anyone else have you.”A sardonic smile tugged at my lips. “Let’s focus on leaving. I’m almost ready. Meet me at the van.”He muttered a curse under his breath as he left. I shook my head, half exasperated, half pitying. As I dressed, uncertainty settled in. The crushing sense that this was over before it even began made my eyes sting.I picked up the velvet cloak Jax had bought for me as my eyes grew hot with unshed tears. A dull ache spread throu

RivenChills crawled down my spine as Athena called Lira unfit to be Luna. I couldn’t meet her eyes, afraid my thoughts would betray me. Afraid the dread meant I’d imagined Lira surviving the world outside.I stayed silent, hating the unfairness of this bond, fearing others would see her as less. I pictured the world tearing her apart, judging her, delighting in her pain beyond the alpha house walls. They would consume her. I saw it in my head—the full moon feast, packmates raising cups to the new Luna, someone announcing she had no wolf.Jax cupped her chin. “Look at me.”She kept her eyes down. Her lips trembled.“I swear on everything I hold dear I’ll protect you and carry every scar meant for you. Choose me and I won’t let a hand reach you.”“Back off with your empty promise,” Kain snarled.“My Lords. Enough. Let’s take it back a notch,” Athena said. “All I’m concerned about is keeping blood off the ground.”Her eyes moved among the three of us. “You know our people, how violent t

LiraThe next few days passed quietly. The Alphas were buried in preparations for the ball; I stayed in my room.Angie’s laughter drifted down the corridor once in a while, followed by the sound of her feet pattering away. But when I caught a glimpse of her, her skin still had the rashes from the allergy.I didn’t trust Zuri, not after what happened with the doll. And I couldn’t shake the thought that she might be feeding the child something to make her worse, to make me look like a curse in this house. The idea made my skin crawl.I told Tova what I’d noticed. Her brows pinched together. “Lira, I know Zuri’s not a monster, but she wouldn’t harm her own niece.”“She already used her once,” I said. “What’s to stop her from doing it again?”Tova sighed, wiping her hands on her apron. “You’re thinking too much. Besides, Angie’s grandmother, Ophelia, will be here soon. Maybe that’ll keep Zuri occupied.”My chest tightened. “You knew her?”Tova hesitated, then shrugged. “Not well. She’s… o

Lira The triplets watched me like predators, and the urge to run hit me like a punch to the gut. But I couldn’t. Running would only make me easier prey. I’d die faster than a cockroach under a boot.Fear hammered in my chest. I’d never imagined my worst fears would come true—the ones burned into me since birth—that I was an abomination. What I’d been running from had found me. These three alphas looked compulsive enough to make me their obsession.“Please, my Lord. May I speak?” My voice wasn’t timid, but I forced it to sound so.Alpha Jax, closest to me, nodded. His gaze burned through me with such hunger that if we were alone, he might have dropped to his knees to worship me. He reached out, brushed a strand of hair from my face, and tucked it behind my ear, giving me his full attention.“Could you give me a few days to say my goodbyes? I have unfinished business with Lady Astoria. She can confirm it.”Alpha Kain beside Garrith wore deep frown lines etched into his face. Alpha Rive

KainI ran ahead of the others as the forest air sliced through my lungs. We enjoyed the pack hunt, but this was beyond enjoyment for me; it was discipline and control. The pack needed to stay sharp. I needed to stay sane.Since the last border raid, I hadn’t stopped thinking about how close we’d come to losing ground. If I failed again, I wasn’t sure I’d live with it. The title Alpha of War wasn’t a reward; it was a weight that pressed until you cracked or adapted. We split up midway into small groups through the hunt. I led mine east, where the tracks bent toward the river. The others fanned out, bows ready. The night was thin with moonlight. I moved through the brush, scenting the air until I caught the musky trail of a stag. The deer burst out from behind the ridge. My wolf surged beneath my skin, begging to take over, but I held him back. I signaled to Jax, and together we closed in. One strike through the heart and the creature fell with a dull thud. The silence between my broth
